Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
D. K. HICKOK, OF MORRISVILLE, VERMONT.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,694, dated August 21, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. K. I-Iicxox, of Morrisville, in the county of Lamoille and Stateof Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specication, in the several gures of which similar characters of reference denote the same part.
Figure l, is a perspective view of the clothes drier. Fig. 2, is vertical section showing manner of connection with the shaft A.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of clothes drier as hereinafter to be described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation as follows:
In the drawing A represents an upright shaft or standard, constructed with a groove a, near its head B is the cap or upper hub, and C the lower hub. The hub B is solid in its top and is constructed with two holes f in which are fitted two pins 7L L passing through the hub and projecting into the groove a, the outer portion of said pins being provided with openings s through which passes a rope, said hub resting and revolving upon the head of standard, and held in position by reason of the pins 7L /L working in the groove a of standard.
G is a rope, which is secured to arm D as at (IZ, and passes through pin it over the upper hub B through the pin it and down to the projection lc, where it is secured, the pins acting as guides to the rope, keeping' it in place, the rope also serving to keep the pins in place and prevent their being forced out.
D are radial arms which are set in the C and securely fastened slots of lower hub by wire o.
D is a series of lines t at the desired distance apart, upon which the material to be dried is hung.
The operation is asv follows: The standard A being provided with a heavy base, fitted in a socket, or held in position by any desired means; the operator by pulling upon the rope G causes the drier to expand and have the position as shown in the drawing; the pins It z. being in position as shown. The material to be dried may be then hung upon the lines When the drier is not in operation and it is desired to contract it, the operator loosening the rope, allows the drier through its weight to fold and have position as represented in an ordinary folded umbrella, and is then if desired (the entire apparatus) removed to a. protection from the weather &c.
If it be desired to have the standard remain in its position, on account of its bulk and inconvenience of removal, t-he pins It 7L may be drawn out clear of the groove a, admitting of the folding' portion of the apparatus to be readily removed.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the grooved headed standard A closed cap hub B, pins L L and cord G combined with arms D, braces E and lower hub C, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
D. K. HICKOK.
