Abstract

A comb for the hair having a self-contained nail filing and brushing attachment which is easily withdrawn and separated from the comb during use and which is housed substantially entirely within the comb during periods of nonuse without interfering with the normal usage of the comb.

No. 2,383,7l3 through the provision of a very compact combination comb and finger nail treatment unit which is particularly characterized by minimum bulkiness and the fewest possible number of parts. v

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like numerals designates like parts, and attention being directed first to FIGS. 1 through 4, thereis shown a comb body preferably, although not necessarily, of the size commonly carried in the pocket and having a longitudinal back 10 and groups of large and small comb teeth 11 and 12 secured fixedly to the back end and projecting beyond one "side thereof in the usual manner.

13 and 14, the latter of which is squared off so as to provide anend face 15 on the comb substantially perpendicular to the back 10.

As shown, the end tooth I4 has a recess 16 formed therein and opening through the adjacent end of the comb and extending for the major portion of the length of the tooth l4. Near its top, the recess 16 communicates directly with an elongated opening or slot 17 formed centrally through the back 10 and extending for the majorportion of the length of the latter. a I

The slot 17 is adapted to snugly receive a finger nail file l8 removably mounted therein and connected at its rear end as by a rivet 19 with a finger nail brush 20 arranged substantially at right angles to the nail file l8 and preferably rigidly attached thereto. The brush bristles 21 have their tips preferably cut on an arc as shown in FIG. 3 and the interior'wall of the recess 16 is preferably curved to conform to the tips of the I bristles, whereby the brush may be substantially socketed in therecess 16 in a nonuse position as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 with only the back member 22 of the brush projecting beyond the end of the-tooth l4 and lying substantially against the straight edge 15 of the end tooth. Consequently, when the nail treatment device is in its full nonuse position, FIG. I, it lies substantially within the interior of the comb in a highly compact manner and without imparting any substantial bulkiness to the overall structure. As shown in FIG. 3, the nail treatment device may easily be withdrawn bodily from the comb proper for use in the same manner described in said prior US. Pat. No. 2,383 713. There is referably a slight friction fit between the nail tile 18 and slot 57 so that the parts will not separate accidentally. The comb may be fully utilized with the nail treatment attachment stored within it or separated therefrom.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show a slight modification of the invention wherein the comb has the same back 10 and comb teeth 11.

The back 10 is slotted at 23 for the reception of a finger nail file 24 as in the first embodiment, and the outer end of the nail file is riveted as at 25 to a nail brush whose back 26 is curved to conform to the exterior curvature 27 of a modified endmost comb tooth 28. The comb tooth 28 has a recess or socket 29 to receive the bristles 30 of the nail brush which are contoured to fill up the recess 29 when the nail file and brush are in the fully socketed nonuse pbsition of FIG. 5. When in such position, only the curved back 26 of the brush lies outwardly of the curved edge 27 of the endmost tooth 28 and the construction is very compact and adds substantially no bulkiness to the pocket comb. To accomplish this, as shown in FIG. 6, the bristles 30 are successively shorter toward the terminal tip of the back.26 remote from the nail file and rivet 25. As in the prior embodiment, the nail file and brush are easily removable from the comb as a unit for use in manicuring the fingernails.

It is to be understood that the forms of the invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the subjoined claims.

I claim:

, l. A combined comb and nail treatment device comprising a comb body including a back having a longitudinal opening therein, the comb body having an enlarged end tooth and said end tooth having a recess therein communicating with said opening, and a nail treatment unit comprising a nail file insertable longitudinally within said opening of the comb back and a substantially right angular nail brush secured to one end of the nail file and having a group of bristles positioned to enter said recess when the nail file is introduced into said opening, said recess receiving the bristles substantially totally, and a thin back element carrying the bristles and serving to cover the open side of the recess and lying closely against said open side throughout substantially the entire length of the brush and the end tooth having the recess.

A combined comb and nail treatment device as defined by claim 1, wherein the outer side of said end tooth having the recess is substantially straight and substantially perpendicular to said opening receiving the nail file and said back element of the brush is also substantially straight and adapted to abut the outer side of said tooth along its entire length and width.

A combined comb and nail treatment device as defined by claim 1, wherein said end tooth] having said recess is tapered toward its tip and has a curved outer side, whereby the recess tapers toward the tip of the tooth and away from the comb back, said nail brush including a curved back conforming to the curvature of said tooth outer side and adapted to lie against the same throughout substantially the full length of the end tooth and the bristles of the nail brush decreasing in length gradually toward the shallow end of the tapered recess so that the bristles are substantially totally enclosed by the recess when said curved back is abutting the outer side of said tooth.

Claims

1. A combined comb and nail treatment device comprising a comb body including a back having a longitudinal opening therein, the comb body having an enlarged end tooth and said end tooth having a recess therein communicating with said opening, and a nail treatment unit comprising a nail file insertable longitudinally within said opening of the comb back and a substantially right angular nail brush secured to one end of the nail file and having a group of bristles positioned to enter said recess when the nail file is introduced into said opening, said recess receiving the bristles substantially totally, and a thin back element carrying the bristles and serving to cover the open side of the recess and lying closely against said open side throughout substantially the entire length of the brush and the end tooth having the recess.

A combined comb and nail treatment device as defined by claim 1, wherein said end tooth having said recess is tapered toward its tip and has a curved outer side, whereby the recess tapers toward the tip of the tooth and away from the comb back, said nail brush including a curved back conforming to the curvature of said tooth outer side and adapted to lie against the same throughout substantially the full length of the end tooth and the bristles of the nail brush decreasing in length gradually toward the sHallow end of the tapered recess so that the bristles are substantially totally enclosed by the recess when said curved back is abutting the outer side of said tooth.
