*This-inventionrelates to devices for dressing 'the'--hair-from the'standpoint of combing, brush- -ing-and arranging curls therein. "More particularly, the inventiondeals-withthe device ofthe characterdescribed particularly having-means whereby the comb orbrush maybe individually --use'd,-or axcombination comb and-brush simultaneously used in dressing the-hair. Still more -"particularly, the invention deals with a device of "the kind definedhaving an. extending handle portion, grooved on opposed'surfaces, thereby "facilitatingattachment of bobby-pins to hair "wound around the handle portion in retaining the "Wound hair by'the pins to form curls and in tapering the "handle portion to facilitate re-' -mova1 of the curl therefrom.

The novel features of the invention will .be 'best' understood from the 3 following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain'embodiments of'the *invention'are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters' in-each ofthe views-and; in which:

From the foregoing, it will be'apparent that the device has five distinct-uses, namely the two suses indicated in Figs. land '2, the individual wcombnse, the-individual brush use, utilizing the brush portions 26 alone, and the further brush use, where the brush portions 25 are used in conjunction with the brush portions 26.

By detachably mounting the. comb back [8 and the brush back I9 with respect to the stock or body I I, all parts of the device can be easily cleaned from time to time, the comb utilized to free hairs from the various brush portions and both comb and brush portions otherwise cleaned.

The device may be composed of any desired material and lends itself to formation from plastic material, wherein the unitary body and handle II and i8 and the backs l8 and i9 including the integral teeth 22, 23 and 24 with the back l9, can be formed of cast or moulded plastic materials. By constructing the backs i8 and [9 as independent parts, these parts may be produced in colors contrasting to the body portion and handle of the device and bristles of different colors can be used. In referring to colors, it will be understood that the parts may be composed of the colorless or transparent plastic materials.

It will be understood that the particular spacing and arrangement of the various brush portions or bristle bundles, shown in the accompanying drawing, are diagrammatic and can be modified to suit the requirements.

It will be apparent that the two sets of bristles or brush portions 26, 28, disposed at opposite sides of the teeth 22 of the comb and in spaced relationship thereto, will, in the use of the combination comb and brush, facilitate waving of the hair in the tendency to deflect or curve the hair in its passage from one set of bristles between the comb teeth and, then, through the other set of bristles. In other words, the hair does not have a direct path of travel between the teeth of the comb.

For purposes of description, the device may be said to comprise an elongated stock or body having a handle member at one end; the various bristle bundles, or brush portions, may be said to comprise brush elements. The comb back, in conjunction with its teeth, may be termed a comb unit and the brush back l9, together with its brush elements 25, may be said to comprise a brush unit.

It will be understood that each brush and comb unit comprises an article of manufacture which may be sold independent of the complete assemblage as a replacement part for replacement when worn or otherwise requiring replacement. Furthermore, this construction adapts the device f or initial sale with insert comb and brush units suitable to the inclination of the purchaser, thus minimizing the stocking of complete assemblages. In other words, the body portion and handle member may be produced in a neutral color, such as transparent, white, black, etc. to which may be applied the comb and brush units of any colors suiting the desire of the purchaser.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described comprising an elongated unitary member having a handle portion and a body portion, the body portion having undercut grooves extending longitudinally of opposed sides thereof extending from the handle portion and opening outwardly through the end of said body portion, a series of brush portions extending longitudinally of the body portion at each side of one of said grooves and in diverging relationship to each other, a comb back having a dovetailed projection extending longitudinally thereof adapted for mounting in either of said grooves of the body portion, said comb back having longitudinally spaced teeth extending therefrom, a brush back having a dovetailed portion extending longitudinally thereof adapted for mounting in either of said grooves, and a plurality of brush portions spaced longitudinally of and projecting from the brush back.

2. A device of the class described comprising an elongated unitary member having a, handle portion and a body portion, the body portion having undercut grooves extending longitudinally of opposed sides thereof extending from the handle portion and opening outwardly through the end of said body portion, a series of brush portions extending longitudinally of the body portion at each side of one of said grooves and in diverging relationship to each other, a comb back having a dovetailed projection extending longitudinally thereof adapted for mounting in either of said grooves of the body portion, said comb back having longitudinally spaced teeth extending therefrom, a brush back having a dovetailed portion extending longitudinally thereof adapted for mounting in either of said grooves, a plurality of brush portions spaced longitudinally of and pro- J'ecting from the brush back, said brush portions comprising bundles of bristles secured in the supports therefor, and said handle portion having recesses on opposed sides thereof throughout the major portion of the length thereof.

A device of the class described comprising an elongated unitary member having a handle portion and a body portion, the body portion having undercut grooves extending longitudinally of opposed sides thereof extending from the handle portion and opening outwardly through the end of said body portion, a series of brush portions extending longitudinally of the body portion at each side of one of said grooves and in diverging relationship to each other, a comb back having a dovetailed projection extending longitudinally thereof adapted for mounting in either of said grooves of the body portion, said comb back having longitudinally spaced teeth extending therefrom, a brush back having a dovetailed portion extending longitudinally thereof adapted for mounting in either of said grooves, a plurality of brush portions spaced longitudinally of and projecting from the brush back, said brush portions comprising bundles of bristles secured in the supports therefor, said handle portion having recesses on opposed sides thereof throughout the major portion of the length thereof, and a substantial part of the handle portion being contracted.

In devices of the class described, an elongated body portion, a handle member extending integrally from one end of the body portion, the body portion having two rows of brush elements arranged longitudinally of and projecting from one side of the brush body with one row of elements in diverging relationship to the other row of elements, a comb unit detachable with respect to said body and arranged intermediate said rows of brush elements, and a brush unit detachably mounted with said body in circumferentially spaced relationship to the coupling of the comb unit therewith.

In devices of the class described, an elongated body portion, a handle member extending integrally from one end of the body portion, the body portion having two rows of brush elements arranged longitudinally of and projecting from one side of the brush body with one row of elements in diverging relationship to the other row of elements, a comb unit detachable with respect to said body and arranged intermediate said rows of brush elements, a brush unit detachably mounted with said body in circumferentially spaced relationship to the coupling of the comb unit therewith, and the detachable coupling of the comb and brush units with said body comprising dovetailed grooves in said body and dovetailed projections on said unit slidably engaging the grooves of said body.

6. In devices of the class described, an elongated body portion, a handle member extending integrally from one end of the body portion, the body portion having two rows of brush elements arranged longitudinally of and projecting from one side of the brush body with one row of elements in diverging relationship to the other row of elements, a brush unit detachable with respect to said body and adapted to be arranged in a first mounting thereof intermediate said rows of brush elements, and other means for mounting the brush unit on said body in spaced relationship to the first mounting thereof.
