Description

L. SAMS.
(No Model.)
FENCE;
No. 355,217. Patented Dec. 28, 1886.
N. PETERS. Phmum m m. Wishingian. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFAYETTE SAMS, OF NEAR WOLCOTTVILLE, INDIANA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,217, dated December 28, 1886.
I Application tiled July 22, 1886. Serial No. 208,796. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE SAMS,Q. citizen of the United States, residing near VVolcottville, in the county of Lagrange and A State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in portable fences in which each" panel is made separate; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a cheap, light, and substantial fence without much wood and having an iron post-support, thus preventing the wood from touching the ground and decaying,
and having adjustable connections for holding the panels together. I-attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the drawings, in which 1 Figure 1 shows a perspective view of one panel of the fence as set up. Fig. 2 is a detail of the post-support as detached from fence.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
Each panel consists of two boards, a A, one post, B, two upright stays, O C, with wire strands D D D D, and hooks e E. The post B has two gains cut to receive boards a. A. The stays O O are fastened transversely to boards a'A, as shown in Fig. 1. The stay farthest from post B is set a short distance from the ends of boards a A to allow them to lap on the post at the end of the next panel, where there are two hooks, e E, to receive them. The top hook, 6, goes through the post B and has a not on its back to tighten upon and clamp the top board when the fence is set up, so as to firmly hold it in position. The bottom board has a notch, i, to set in hook E. The
wires D D D D-are stretched and fastened to post B and stays O O.
The post-support consists ofa piece of iron, F, curved edgewise, with eyes j j for pins 9 g. The'curve in piece F causes the pins 9 g to set at anangle inward, thus preventing the fence from moving them, yet permitting themto be easily drawn by hand'or lever, The braces h h extend from near ends of bar F to post B, where they are bolted or screwed fast.
I am aware that prior to my invention mov able fences have been made, and that similar boards and stays have been used on gates and fences, but am "not aware of their being applied to a fence of this description. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
\Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The portable fencepanel composed of the end post, B, with books e E, the crossstaysO G, and the top and bottom bars, d A, connected to the post and stays andextending beyond the end stay, and having notch i, and the intermediate wire strands, D, in combination with the bracedjsupport consisting of bar F, with inclined ortriangular braces h, and pins or stakes g g, substantially as and for the purpose described.
