Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ORIN THOMAS, OF ROCHESTERr DEPOT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,897, dated May 23, 1h76 application iiled October 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ORIN THOMAS, of Rochester Depot, State of Ohio, and county of Lorain, havev invented an Improvement in a Fence; and I d o hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 a cross-section, of my invention.
The object of my invention is to construct a `fence which Will be portable, and at the same time entirely efficient and durable as an inclosure; and it consists in poising the posts upon metal pins inserted in the top of a stone block or ballast, and bracing said posts by means of rods passing from either side of the posts down, to the ends of the stone blocks, where the bent ends of the rods are inserted in holesin the ends of said blocks.
In the drawing, A represents the posts or uprights, and B the rails, of an ordinary board fence. O is a stone block; a, an upright iron pin inserted in its top, and b holes drilled in its ends. Upon either side of the posts Aof the fence are rods or braces c, bolted or other- Wise secured thereto, the ends of which are bent to a horizontal position toward said posts. Y
To set my fence, the blocks are placed in position at right angles to the line of the fence, at distances equal to the distance of the posts apart. The posts A of the fence are then poised upon the pins a, the pins entering the i bottom ofthe post, and the braces c, after the bent ends of which have been inserted in the holes b in the ends of the blocks C, are fastened to the sides of the posts A, a bolt passing through both braces and the posts; or the braces may pass through the posts and be Wedge-keyed on the opposite side, as shown. The braces o may, in irregular blocks, pass around them.
' I prefer this latter method of fastening the braces to the posts. Other means may, of course, be used to secure the braces.
The angles in the fence, it may easily be seen, are made by attaching the rails B to the posts at the required angle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a portable fence. the posts A, perforated in the bottom, in combination With the stone blocks O, having a metallic pin, a, in the top, and holes in the ends, and the rod-braces c, hooked in the holes in the ends of the stone blocks, and adjustably secured to the posts A, substantially as described. t
The above specification of said invention signed and witnessed, at Rochester Depot, this 19th day'of October, A. D. 1875.
ORIN THOMAS.
