Description

United States Patent O Int. Cl. A45d40/ 00, 40/12 U.S. Cl. 401-78 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A holder for sticks of pasty materials such as cosmetics and the like, having a pair of relatively rotatable sleeves, and a rib on one sleeve in lfrictional engagement with the other sleeve for restraining spontaneous movement of the sleeves with respect to each other.
This invention relates to holders for protecting sticks of pasty materials such as make-up, pomades, cosmetics, pharmaceutical or veterinary products and the like, of the type comprising two coaxial sleeves which can turn one relatively to the other and a support or godet for a stick which is movable in the inner sleeve and which carries a lug extending through a slot in the inner sleeve and also engaged in a slot in the outer sleeve, one of these two slots being longitudinal and the other helicoidal, the holder being closed by a removable cover.
In holders of the kind in question it is desirable to avoid the outer sleeve turning on the inner sleeve, due to vibrations, so that the stick support would approach the cover, an occurrence which would risk bringing the end of the stick into contact with the bottom of the cover against which it would be undesirably deformed.
To this end according to the invention at least one of the two sleeves is provided, on a face thereof in contact with the other sleeve, with at least one continuous rib which extends in a direction substantially parallel to that of the slot formed in the same sleeve and said rib having an axial extent at least equal to that of the slot formed in the other sleeve.
The invention will be better understood |by reading the following description and examining the accompanying drawings which show by way of non-limitative example, several embodiments of the invention.
In these drawings:
FIG. 1 shows in longitudinal section the complete assembled holder in one embodiment.
FIG. 2 is, to a larger scale, a longitudinal section of the outer sleeve of FIG. l; v
FIG. 3 is a view similar lto FIG. l of another embodi" ment, and
FIG. 4 is a transverse section along the line IV-IV of FIG. 3, and shows the inner sleeve and stick support positioned as illustrated in FIG. 1.
The holder for a stick of pasty material such as makeup, pomade, cosmetic, pharmaceutical or veterinary prod` ucts or the like shown in FIG. 1 comprises in a conventional manner a stick support or godet 21 which carries the stick of pasty material 22 and which is mounted for longitudinal sliding movement in an inner sleeve 23. The stick support has projecting from its outer cylindrical surface two diametrically opposed lugs, such as 25 which can slide into two longitudinal slots 27, 28 respectively, formed in the cylindrical wall of the inner sleeve 23. An outer sleeve 31 (see also FIG. 2) is adapted to turn with respect to inner sleeve 23, and is retained axially by two shoulders 32, 33 on the inner sleeve. In the inner face of the cylindrical wall of the outer sleeve 31 two diametrically opposed helicoidal slots 35, 36 are formed in which the ends of the lugs 25 on the sliding support 21 are engaged and retained for movement of stick support 21 axially of the holder when the outer and inner sleeves are rotated with respect to each other..
A metallic reinforcing tube 39 is force or press iit on the outer sleeve 31. One end 41 of tube 39 presents an opening 42 for the passage of the stick 22, the opening 42 being covered by a conventional cover which, for clarity of illustration, has not been shown. As shown in FIG. l, the lower end of inner sleeve 23 terminates in an enlarged section 45 to which is secured a handle 43 which is adapted to rotate the inner sleeve with respect to the outer sleeve.
In order that, due to the effect of vibrations, the two sleeves should not risk turning one relatively to the other while the holder is closed Iby the cover so that the end of the stick 22 d-oes not risk coming into contact with the bottom of the cover, the outer sleeve 31 has projecting from its cylindrical inner surface a rib 81 which extends unbroken in a direction substantially parallel to that of the helicoidal slot 36 of said outer sleeve and which is of a length at least equal to that of the longitudinal slot 28 in the inner sleeve 23. The frictional force exerted by this helicoidal rib L81 against the cylindrical outer surface of the inner sleeve 31 tends to oppose any relative rotational movement between the two sleeves and, in consequence, any spontaneous axial displacement of the stick of pasty material 22.
As the rib l81 is continuous throughout the length of slot 28 there is no risk of it catching in the longitudinal slot 28 in the inner sleeve as the inner sleeve and outer sleeve are rotated with respect to each other.
In a modification shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, which is otherwise the same as that illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, it is the inner sleeve 23 which has projecting from its outer cylindrical surface a continuous rib 83 which extends in a longitudinal direction parallel to the slot 2-8 of said sleeve and which is of a length at least equal to the axial or longitudinal length of the helicoidal slot 36 in the outer sleeve 31. This rib y83 thus exerts a Iforce against the inner cylindrical surface of the outer sleeve 31, which, in this case, does not present the helicoidal rib indicated at f81 in FIG. 2. As the rib I83 is unbroken there is no risk of it catching in the helicoidal slot 36 in the outer sleeve. The force exerted by this longitudinal rib 83 against the outer sleeve 31 forms a frictional braking means opposing unwanted relative rotary movement between the two sleeves.
The same article may have at the same time one or more ribs projecting inwards from the outer sleeve and one or more ribs projecting outwards from the inner sleeve.
I claim:
1. In a holder for a stick of pasty material, said holder having an -opening at one end which is adapted to be covered when not in use, comprising an outer elongate sleeve and a coaxial inner sleeve being positioned within said outer sleeve for rotation relative to said outer sleeve, a support member within said inner sleeve adapted to move axially within said inner sleeve, and said inner sleeve dening a slot, said outer sleeve defining a slot, one of said slots being longitudinal and the other being helicoidal, said support member having at least one lug projecting through the slot in said inner sleeve and into the slot in said outer sleeve whereby said support member is adapted to move longitudially of said holder when said sleeves are rotated relative to each other, the improvement comprising an elongate integral continuous rib formed on one of said sleeves, said rib projecting toward the other of said sleeves 4 and being in frictional engagement with the other of s aid rib is on the inner surface of the outer sleeve and is a sleeves to oppose relative rotation therebetween, said rib helicoidal rib. being substantially parallel to and spaced from and inde- References Cited pendent of the slot in the sleeve on which it is and having UNITED STATES PATENTS an axial length substantially equal to the axial extent of r the slot in the other s1eeve 0 2,072,662 3/1937 AbbOS 401-74X 2.
