Filed Aug. 12, 1957, Ser. No. 677,531
4 Claims. (Cl. 20656) The present invention relates to cosmetics and has particular reference to applicators for solid or substantially solid cosmetics in cake form.
The invention is particularly applicable for lip sticks and hereinafter will be described in connection therewith, it being understood however that the invention is not limited in its scope to lip stick material but may very well be utilized for eye brow pencils, mascara and other solid or substantially solid cosmetic material.
In lip stick applicators as heretofore developed, the lip stick cake or cartridge is either fixed in the base portion of an applicator and housed within a removable cap or may be propelled and repelled from a base portion of the applicator, the cap of the applicator being applied over the lip stick when the latter is in repelled position. In applicators of the character under consideration the outer casing or shell is usually of more or less permanent form to which may be applied so-called refills of the cosmetic material and as heretofore developed the applicators take either one of two forms, in one of which a refill of lip stick material is adapted to be inserted in a base cup or the like in the applicator and in another of which a refill assembly comprised of the cosmetic materal and a mounting therefor is adapted to be used as a replacement for the cosmetic cake and the mounting thereof in the original applicator. In the first instance the replacement of the cosmetic body or cartridge requires the removal from the applicator of the base portion of the original cartridge, which is at times not only dilficult but in any event undesirable because of the difiiculty of preventing undesirable smearing of the material of the cartridge, before a replacement cartridge can be placed in the applicator. In the second instance where the undesirable difficulties of removing the base portion of a cartridge before inserting a replacement are avoided, the alternative is relatively expensive, the replacement constituting the assembly of the cosmetic material and an operative base on which it is mounted so that actually in most instances of that character the only part of the original applicator retained is the cap which covers the assembly.
In order to obviate many of the disadvantages heretofore inherent in the forms of cosmetic applicators as previously developed, a principal object of the present invention, in one of its aspects, is the provision of a new and improved form of cosmetic applicator which will not only enable relatively inexpensive refills consisting substantially only of cosmetic material to be utilized, but
which will additionally enable the cosmetic materialto be readily inserted and removed from the applicator without the necessity for the operator, while either removing a used cartridge of cosmetic material or while inserting a refill of such material, from coming in contact with the material itself.
A further principal object of the invention, in another of its aspects, is the provision of a new and improved form of cosmetic cartridge which can be readily insertable in an applicator to which the invention relates, which nited States Patent i 2,964,170 Patented Dec. 13, 1960 "ice cartridge can be completely enclosed in paper, plastic or other covering which may be retained in fully applied form until after the cartridge is inserted in the applicator, thus making it possible to carry spare cartridges without danger of smearing of the cosmetic material on other objects until after the cartridge has been inserted into the applicator, after which insertion the cover for the working end of the cartridge may readily and conveniently be removed.
Other and more detailed objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description of a suitable form of applicator embodying the invention, hereinafter described, proceeds.
As previously noted, the invention is advantageously applicable to lip sticks and applicators therefor and by way of example, but without limitation, reference is had to the ensuing portion of this specification in which is described, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, such an applicator.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective elevational view of the assembled applicator;
Fig. 2 is a perspective exploded view of major components of the applicator;
Fig. 3 is a perspective exploded view of a sub-assembly of certain elements of the applicator;
Fig. 4 is a perspective exploded view of a subassembly of other elements of the applicator;
Fig. 5 is a perspective exploded view of a subassembly of still other elements of the applicator;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a cosmetic element or cartridge adapted for use with the parts shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a brush and cap component, partly in section, of the kind shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a different form of cosmetic refill element or cartridge;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of still another form of such refill as shown in Fig. 8;
Fig. 10 is a longitudinal central section of an assembled applicator taken on the line lit-10 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 11 is a longitudinal central section partly in elevation taken at right angles to the section of Fig. 10;
Fig. 12 is a longitudinal central section on enlarged scale showing part of the assembly illustrated in Fig. 10;
Fig. 13 is a partial transverse cross section on enlarged scale taken on the line iii-13 of Fig. 12; and
Fig. 14 is a section taken on the line 14-44 of Fig. 10.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the applicator comprises an outer shell designated generally at 10 and having a central cylindrical porton 10a providing abutment shoulders 10b and 1061 Beyond these shoulders extend the portions, advantageously but not necessarily conical, 10d and 10e, respectively, for the frictional seating of a forward end cap 12 and a rearward end cap 14.
Since the general construction of the device is more or less in the nature cf an annular hollow tube similar. to a gun barrel, it is convenient to refer to various parts in terms of such equipment. Consequently hereafter for purposes of convenience and clarity the forward end of the container will be referred to as the nose or muzzle end of the shell and the rearward end of the container will be referred to as the rear or breech end.
By reference to Fig. 12 it will be seen that the portion 10d of the shell 10 is provided at its forward end with an inturned flange 10 and also by reference to the same figure it will be seen that the portion 10e at its rear or breech end is formed with a part 10g of reduced diameter.
. is mounted the sleeve 16 longitudinally fixedbetween a stop, such as that shown at 16a in Fig. 12, abutting against the flange 101 of the element and fixed in the opposite longitudinal direction by the differential diameter between the portions 10c and 10g of the element 10.
As will be observed from Fig. l2, the forward or nose end" of sleeve 16 is exposed when the nose cap 12 is removed from the outer shell 10. V
At its forward or nose end the element 16, which is held against longitudinal movement on the one hand by the stop 16:: and on the other hand by the differential diameter between the portions 10:: and 19g of element 10, is provided with an inturned flange 16b adapted to act as a longitudinal stop for an actuating sleeve 18 hereinafter to be described. 7
The sleeve 16 carries with a frictional force fit within its bore the actuating sleeve 18, whichris provided with a helical slot 20 as will be more readily seen from the exploded view of Fig. 4, and also Fig. 11, the sleeve 16 masking the slot 20.
Sleeve 18 is held against longitudinal movement not only by frictional contact between itself and the covering sleeve 16, but also by the flange 16b.
For receiving the cosmetic cartridge or refill there is provided the sleeve member generally designated at 22 which in the present embodiment has a differential diameter embodying a forward or nose portion 22:: of relatively smaller diameter and a rearward or breech portion 22b of relatively larger diameter connected by a shoulder 22c. The portion 22b of the sleeve 22 is a force fit within the portion 10g of the element 10 and is nonrotatable therein. The cosmetic element or cake is indicated generally at 24 and comprises as shown in Fig. 6 a rearward or breech end of relatively large diameter 24a and a forward or nose portion of relatively smaller diameter 24b.
The enlarged breech portion 24a is advantageously encased in some form of permanent covering such as plastic, waxed paper or the like indicated at 240 while the forward or nose end portion 24b is advantageously encased in some suitable covering material such as waxed paper or the like 24d.
Dimensioned to frictionally engage the breech portion 10g of element 10 there is provided a retaining cap 26 having an inturned flange at its outer end 2611 and as will be seen from Fig. 12 the cosmetic cartridge 24 may be inserted into the container by a breech-loading operation in which the cosmetic unit is inserted from the breech or rear end of the casing to a point where the differential diameter of the breech abuts against the shoulder 22c, and thereafter the retaining cap 26 may be inserted in order to hold the cartridge in operative position.
In accordance with the principles of the present invention the cosmetic cake or cartridge is at all times retained in longitudinally fixed position within the casing 10 and instead of being propelled or repelled in accordance with usual practice in devices of this kind as heretofore produced it is protected by a guard sleeve 23 which is propelled or repelled longitudinally relative to the nose portion of the cosmetic cake by rotation of the sleeve element 16 and its accompanying frictionally engaged sleeve element 18 in which is located the helical slot 20. t s V Sleeve 28 has fixed thereon, and extending externally therefrom, a pin 30 located to be engaged, when the parts are assembled, within the helical slot 20 in part 18.
In order to extend from the part 28 to the slot 20 in part 18, it is necessary for the pin to extend through the sleeve 22 and in thelatter sleeve there is provided a longitudinally extending slot 22d. Consequently, when the element 16 is manually rotated, which causes rotation of the sleeve 18 and the helical slot 20, the part 22 remains rotationally stationary and pin 30, by virtue of passing through both the longitudinal slot 22d and the spiral slot 20, operates to cause theguard sleeve 28 to be either propelled or repelled, depending upon the, direction-of rotation of the part 16.
Advantageously, but not necessarily, the breech end of the cosmetic cartridge is made in the form of an annulus providing an axially extending socket or recess 24a for the reception of a brush 32 mounted by means of a suitable cap 34 in the rearward end cap 14. This feature is not claimed per se in so far as the present application is concerned, being disclosed in the copending application of Carl Louis Otto et 211., Serial No. 524,472, filed July 26, 1955.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 8, and with reference to the previously mentioned feature of being able to carry refills of cosmetic cartridges without danger of smearing the cosmetic material, there is illustrated a further modification of the general form of cosmetic cartridge shown in Fig. 6 which in its major respects is of the same general construction as shown in Fig. 6 and in which corresponding portions of the cartridge are designated by like reference numerals, the difference being that the forward or nose end of the cartridge is masked by a paper or equivalent covering 24 which completely masks the nose portion of the cosmetic cartridge and which is advantageously connected to the covering portion 24d by means of a perforated or scored line, such as is indicated at 24g, and is also advantageously longitudinally provided with a perforated 0r scored line 2412. With this form of refill it will be evident that it may be carried in a Womans purse or other receptacle without danger of smearing other objects and may very readily be utilized as a refill by inserting it from the breech end of the casing, then retracting the guard sleeve, and lastly peeling the covering 241 from the then exposed end of the cosmetic stick.
While in the previously described embodiments the cosmetic cartridge has been shown in its preferred form with a differential diameter between the portions 24a and 24b (see Fig. 6), such a differential diameter is not essential and the device may be constructed so as to take a cartridge or refill of constant diameter, such as shown in Fig. 9. In the cartridge shown in that figure and indicated generally at 36, the breech end of the cartridge advantageously covered by a paper, plastic or equivalent covering 38 may be made of a diameter such that it provides a snug fit within the breech end of the receiving sleeve and may be pushed therein, relying upon frictional contact between the cartridge and its receiving sleeve, the cartridge being retained against ejection in the breech direction by means of the retaining cap 26.
Since in the use of cosmetic under consideration the force supplied to the cartridge during use thereof is always toward the breech end, the shoulder for preventing forward movement of the cartridge within the casing is not essential although it is to be preferred.
As in the form of cartridge shown in Fig. 8, the one shown in Fig. 9 is also advantageously masked throughout its length by means of a removable paper or equiva: lent guard at the nose end 38a, separable from the main portion of the covering 38 by means of the scored or perforated line 38b and separable by a simi'zar line 380.
While for purposes of example and illustration we have described certain embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that such examples are illustrative in nature rather than limiting and that the scope of the invention is to be determined solely by the scope of the appended claims.
