HUXHUM P. KENT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CHECK-REIN HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,109. dated July 2-1, 1886.
Application filed November 18, 1885. Serial No. 183,252.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUXHUM P. KENT, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Rein Holders, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention consists in the combination of a spring-operated sliding catch with the water-hook of the harness to engage with a grooved stud secured to the checlcrein strap, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation of the waterhook, showing the check-rein strap locked to the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the water-hook with the attached plate broken away to show the coiled'spring which serves to operate the sliding catch. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of the water-hook and an elevation of a portion of the check-rein strap and the grooved stud for engagement with thesliding catch of the water-hook. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the water-hook with the upper portion of the hook broken away. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the sliding catch.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the water-hook, which is to be secured to the harness as usual, and is provided with a perforation, B, adapted to receive the stud G, which is secured to the check-rein strap Dby means of an elongated eye, k. The stud O is provided at its forward end with the groove a, and the sliding catch E is provided with a perforation, b, adapted to receive the head 0 of the locking-stud C. The sliding catch E is also provided with a perforation, (l, to receive the outer end of the coiled spring F, which is arranged in a recess, e, made at one side of the (No moth-l.)
hook, the said recess being covered by means ofa plate, G, which is bent in U form to embrace the sides of the hook, and provided with a perforation, f, which is adapted to receive the head 0 of the locking-stud of the checkrein strap. The plate G is secured to the hook by means of screws or rivets g, and serves to hold the coiled spring F, and the sliding catch E in proper working relation to each other. By simply pressing downward upon the cars h of the sliding catch E the grooved stud G will be released from the engaging-catch, and can then be removed from the hook, and in order to again attach the strap to the hook,
by simply forcing the catch E downward against the action of the spring F, the lockingstud G can be inserted into the perforation 1), upon which, by releasing the catch, the stud will be firmly locked to the hook.
The position of the eye is for a side checkrein is shown in Fig. 1, which shows the eye It as held vertically in the plane of the hook, and the corresponding position of the eye It for an overdraw cheek'rein is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the eye 7t as extending transversely of the plane of the hook A.
I claim as 1nyinvention In a checlereinottaching device, the con bination of the perforated hook, the lockingcatch, its operating spring, and the stud pro vided with the catch -engaging groove and adapted for attach ment to the checkrein strap, substantially as described.
