strap from the check-hook. The bobbing and jerking of the animals head frequently cause the check strap to be disengaged from the check.- hook, thereby putting.' the driver to much inconvenience by requiring him to alight and replace the check-strap. V

The object of my invention is to provide a simple device which will retain the check-strap upon the hook, and which can be readily applied to an ordinary check-hook and be sold at small cost.'

The invention consists of theimprovements whiclrwill be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the' claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional side elevation-of my improved attachment applied toa check-hook. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is a side elevation showing a. moditied form of myimproved Fig. 4 is atop plan view of the attachment removed from the check-hook.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.

A represents a check-hook of any ordinary const1nction,which is secured to the saddle B in the usual manner.

Orepresents a metallic loop which loosely surrounds the body or curved front portion of the cheekhook and to which the check-strap D is permanently attached.

E is a short strap which is secured with its front end to the rear cross-bar, c, of the loop C. The strap E is provided near its rear end with an opening, @,which engages over the nosefof the check-hook, as clearly shown'in the draw; ings, and whereby the strap is secured to the eheckfhook.

In -.applying my improved attachment, the check-strap is first attached to the loop C, and the latter is then slipped over the hook until it reaches the position represented in Figs. l,

2, and 3. The opening ein the strap E is then passed over the nose of the cheek-hook, the opening being preferably made somewhat smaller than the end ot the hook, so that the opening must be forced over the hook, thereby more securely attaching the strap to the hook.

The strap Eprevents the loop O from workment of the checlestrap, and thereby retains the latter upon the check-hook at all times. The forward pull on the check-strap causes the front end of the strap E and the rear cross bar, c, of the loop C to bear against the inner side of the curved portion ofthe check-l1ook,where by the opening in the strap E is relieved from strain and prevented from enlarging and working loose on the hook. The check-strap is dctached from the hook by simply stripping the strap E and the loop O off the check-hook.

In Figs. l and 2 a horizontal loop is shown, which is adapted to receive an overd ra w-check,

vertical baror loop, g, which is formed on the rear cross-bar of thc loop O and is arranged in aplane at right angles to the loop O, so as to receive a side check-strap.

I claim as my invention-A A l. The improved cheek hook attachment herein described, consisting of a strap orsuitfable holder having at one end a ring or loop for holding a checkrein and for connecting the rein to the check-hooland its opposite end provided with a loop or opening adapted to pass over the free end of the hook, all substantially as set forth.

The combination,\vith a checlehookpf an attachment consisting ot' a strap or suitable holder having at one end a ring or loop,G, provided with a loop, `g,arranged at rightangles to said loop and adapted to receive the checkstrap, and at. its opposite end with a loop vor opening adapted to pass over the free end of the hook, substantially as set forth.
