Description

(No Model.)
W. F. SHEDD.
FENCE.
Patented June 29, 1886.
3 1 we 4 1 or Nrran STATES WILLIAM F. SHEDD, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,413, dated June 29,1886.
Application filed April 7, 1886. Serial No. 198,0F8.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, XVILLIAM F. SHEDD, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Farm-Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure l is a perspective view of one panel of the fence; Fig. 2, a like view of the wire loop, the parts of the fence being represented by dotted lines; Fig. 3, a view ofthe Sshaped hook used in the construction of the fence.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different views.
A A and B B are crossed stakes placed at the end of a panel of fence, held in position by wire loops 0 O and L L. Upon the loops LLrests the rail E, held in the lower crotch of the cross-stakes. RiderD is placed in the top crotch of the cross-stakes A A and B B. The rails are suspended from the crossed stakes below the crossing-point thereof by wire loops L L, having a downward extension in loop L, divided into regular sections by S-shaped hooks. Into each section are inserted the ends of the rails, together with the ends of the rails of the next panel. Diagonal braces J and K are located, respectively, upon opposite sides of the fence-panel, and have their upper ends inserted in wire loops 0. The upper ends of said braces are notched on upper side, and each brace is first inserted in the loop and then drawn down to tighten and hold in position the cross-stakes A A B B and rider D. Vertical brace M connects rider D and rails E, F F, and G, and is bound to the same by wire loops, a a a a a. The lower end of brace M is inclined, as shown at I, to fit brace K, and, together with the lower ends of braces J and K, is inserted into and rigidly held by clasp H, said clasp also forming a seat and rest for rail G, and, in conjunction with braces M,
(No model.)
- J, and K, supporting the centers of the rails in their places and avoiding sagging of the center of the panel, the combination of the clasp and braces holding the fence rigidly in proper position and preventing end and side motion.
I am aware that prior to my invention farmfences have been constructed with cross-stakes fastened by wire loops in conjunction with suspended loops for holding rails. I therefore do not claim such parts of my improved fence as new; but
\Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the crossed stakes A A B B, rider D, supported in the upper crotch of said stakes, wire loops L, secured to said stakes below the crossing-point thereof, 3- shaped hooks crossing said loops, rails E F G, supported in said loops upon the hooks, wire 'loops 0, connecting the stakes above the crotch, braces J K, notched at their upper ends, inserted in said loops, as described, and
located, respectively, upon opposite sides of the fence-panel, and clasp H, uniting the lower crossed ends of said braces and serving as a support for the lower rail, G, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the crossed stakes and rails supported thereby, substantially as described, of the wire loops 0 O, inclined braces having notched upper ends engaging said loops, the clasp ll, uniting the lower crossed ends of said braces and supporting the lower rail, and the vertical brace secured to each rail and having an inclined lower end resting upon the brace K within the clasp, substantially as described.
