Description

(NoModeL) i G. P. MEYER & J. M. CHAMBERS.
. PASTENER FOR HOOPS. No. 343,645. Patented June 15, 1886 NlTE STATES PATENT Fries.
GEORGE F. MEYER AND JAMES M. CHAMBERS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FASTENER FOR HOOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,645, dated June 15, 1886.
Application filed April 19, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. MEYER and JAMES M. CHAMBERS, both of the city of- St. Louis, State of Missouri, have made a certain new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Metal Bands, Hoops, or Ties, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in the means employed forjoining and fastening the ends of metal bands, hoops, or ties, and for securing the bands or hoops to barrels or casks, when used for this purpose, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, on which Figure 1 represents a side view of the two detached ends of a mttal band, hoop, or tie constructed for being joined and fastened according to our invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same joined and fastened; Fig. 3, a side view, partly broken away, of a portion of the band or hoop, showing that portion of the device used for securing the band or hoop to a barrel or cask; and Fig. 4., a plan of our invention in position around the barrel or cask, like letters of reference denoting like parts in all the figures.
In carrying out our invention we cut out of the metal band, hoop, or tie, at a suitable distance from one end, a, a triangular or other shaped tongue, Z), which remains unsevered from the band or hoop at its root or base, and which, when the end a is detached from the end 0 of the band or hoop, is bent or barbed outward from the inside of the latter. The upper and lower edges of the band or hoop, near its end a, are formed with dovetailed notches or depressions d, so that the end a, in combination therewith, forms a bevel Tsh aped head, as it were, thereat. Near the other end, a, of the hoop or band, and transversely through the latter, is aslot, e, and at a farther distance from the end 0 are formed horizon tally through the band or hoop two parallel Serial No. 199,447. (No model.)-
a and c of the band or hoop'the end ais placed over and for some distance along the band or hoop from its end 0 until the barbed tongue I; is directly over and is pulled back so as to enter the slot 6 as far as the rootor unsevered portion of the tongue will permit. The projecting sides 9 of the T end a will be over the horizontal slots f, from which position they the band or hoop as the tongue I) and passed through the slotsf. The ends a and 0 being thereby joined, the tongue I) and bent projecting sides 9 of the T end a are then flattened will be thereby securely fastened together.
When our improved fastening is used for the bands or hoops of barrels, casks, tubs, or buckets and the like, we may stamp or cut through the band or hoop at suitable distances apart one or more small triangular-shaped tongues, h, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, which, when the bands or hoops are being placed on the barrels or casks, will lie in the same plane with the bands or hoops. On the latter being adjusted to their proper position, as shown in Fig. 4, the tongues h are bent or driven inward, so as to nick into the staves of the barrels, casks, tubs, buckets, and thelike, whereby any tendency of the bands or hoops to slip or fall off of the barrels or casks will be prevented.
We claim as our invention- In a metal band, hoop, or tie, the end a, having tongue I), and dovetailed notches or depressions (Z, forming head 9 g, in combination with end 0, having slots e and f, substantiall y as shown, "and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof We have afliXed our signatures, in presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of April, 1886.
GEORGE F. MEYER. JAMES M. CHAMBERS.

are bent over inward toward the same side of down upon the inside surface of the end 0 of v the band or hoop, and the two ends a and 0
