A41c 3/08; A41c 3/10; A41b 9/08 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates generally to novel features in womens garments incorporating built-in brassieres as well as related characteristics that render the garments especially convenient, comfortable and attractive for wear.

More particularly, the invention is concerned with novel constructions centering primarily in elasticized bodices which optionally may be associated with skirt portions, as for example in undergarments having the combined features of slips and built-in brassiere bodices. As illustrative, the invention will be described with reference to that type of undergarment which combines the features and utilities of an elasticized (and optionally decorative) bodice with its integrated brassiere, and a slip having unique association with the bodice, as will appear.

The invention has for one of its general objects to provide a novel bodice contoured as a brassiere and wherein a lining component of the brassiere is so associated with and supported by the bodice as to afford exceptional comfort and support for the wearer, and to the exclusion of conventional brassieres.

In a more specific objective, the invention contemplates construction of the bodice with its built-in brassiere as characterized, wherein the rear or a rear section of the bodice is made of elastic fabric so associated with the front of the bodice as to cause it to be form fitting, and to afford elastically tensioned support for the brassiere.

Structurally, this objective is accomplished by forming the brassiere proper essentially as a contoured comfortable fitting internal component attached to the bodice so as to have freedom for independent movement, and so connecting the brassiere to the rear elasticized section of the bodice that in the worn condition of the garment, forces resulting from transverse tensioning of the elasticized section are so transmitted to the lower extent of the brassiere as to alford necessary and comfortably distributed support.

As applied to slip-type garments, the invention further contemplates novel association of the slip skirt with the bodice, by extension of the slip material as a lining for the front section of the bodice, a relation that becomes particularly effective where the bodice may be made of open lace or like material.

The invention has various additional features, objects and details, all of which will be understood from the following description of the accompanying drawing, in

In reference first to FIGS. 1 and 2, the illustrative embodiment of the invention may be described generally as comprising an upper bodice 10 and lower skirt or slip extent 11 associated with the bodice as later explained. In an undergarment the slip may optionally have bottom trim 12.

The bodice 10 is shown to comprise an elasticized rear section or panel 13 which may be made of woven or knitted elastic thread fabric stretchable vertically and horizontally. For decorative effect, the panel 13 desirably is made of elastic lace stretchable for conformance to the body contour. The front section or panel 14 of the bodice preferably is made of freely flexible but nonelastic fabric sewn to the rear panel 13 along side seam lines 15. For decorative conformance with the rear panel, front panel 14 may be made of a normal lace having the pattern of the rear panel lace. The bodice is shown to have shoulder straps at 16, the rear extents 17 of which are formed as continuations of the elastic lace and joined at 18 to front continuations 19 of the inelastic lace.

The slip or skirt portion 11 is joined along seam line 20 to the bottom of the unlined rear panel 13, but at the front of the garment the slip fabric is extended upwardly as lining for the panel 14 and also desirably as linings for the shoulder strap extents 19, particularly where the front panel is made of lace. The slip fabric lining is attached to the inside of the garment along the side seam lines 15 and also along the upper edges 21 and 22 of the bodice as well as along the edges of the strap sections 19. Also the slip material may be sewn to the bottom edge continuances 23 of the rear seam line 20.

In more particular reference to FIGS. 3 to 7, the front panel 14 is shown to be shaped to provide breast cups 24 to which the slip material lining is conformed at 25, the upper extents of the cupped fabric terminating at the edges 21 and 22. The built-in brassiere proper, generally indicated at 26, is shaped and formed to have cup sections 27 conformed or conformable to panel fabric at 24, and made of a suitable soft material having greater body than the outer fabric of the garment. Such material typically may be a quilted pad fabric sewn at 33 along the side edges of the cups to the bodice in alinement with the seam 15, and sewn also to the top edges 21 and 22 as well as to the undersides of the strap sections 19. The inner opposed edges of the padded cups 27 are sewn at 28 to a central preferably elasticized insert 29 extending from the bottom to the top of the brassiere, the insert typically being made of the same elastic lace as used for the rear panel 13, sewn centrally to the outer front panel 14 along the seam line 30. Except for attachment at their tops and sides and along the seam line 30, the bottom edges of the cup pads and the insert 29 are free from attachment to the garment otherwise.

An important feature of the invention, in conjunction with the rear elastic panel 13 is the provision of a brassiere support in the form of an elastic band or tape 31 sewn to the bottom edges of the cup pads and insert 29, and terminally attached to the garment, including the rear panel, at the side seams 15. The elastic tension band 31 otherwise is unattached to the garment so that it remains free for tensioning to the extent dictated by the body size of the wearer and the degree of stretch confinement by the band and rear panel.

Thus in the worn condition of the garment, which is sized to have a comfortable degree of stretch fit, stretch tensioning of the rear panel is transmitted to the band 31 which is allowed to stretch conformably and thus function as an effective body adherent support for the breast cups.

It is understood that the drawings are to be regarded as illustrative of the invention in a typical embodiment, and that various details may be changed without departure from the invention in its intended scope.

I claim:

1. A womans garment comprising a bodice having a fabric front portion shaped to provide abreast cups, an elastic fabric rear panel attached at the sides of the bodice to said front portion and adapted to stretch across the back of the wearer, lining material within and shaped in cupped conformity with said breast cups to form lining cups, said lining cups being joined to the upper edges of the first mentioned cups and to said rear panel at the sides of the bodice and the lining material being free of attachment to said front portion at the bottoms of the cups, and support means attached to the bottoms of the lining cups extending transversely within the garment to attachments with said elastic rear portion, said support means also being unattached to said outer front portion at and below the bottoms of the cups.

2. A garment according to claim 1, in which said means comprises a longitudinally elastic strap attached to the bottoms of the lining breast cups.

3. A garment according to claim 1, in which said lining material is attached to said front portion at a location between the lining cups.

4. A garment according to claim 1, including also elastic means attached centrally to said front portion and interconnecting the lining cups at a location between them.

5. A garment according to claim 1, in which said lining material is relatively thick cushioning material.

6. A garment according to claim 5, in which said lining material is quilted fabric attached to said support means.

7. A garment according to claim 1, in which the garment has a skirt formed as a continuation of said bodice front portion and attached to said elastic rear panel.

8. A garment according to claim 7, in which the skirt material extends to the top of the garment front and is attached to the top edges of the first mentioned cups and lining cups.

9. A garment according to claim 8, in which said front portion of the body has decorative lace lined by the skirt material.

10. A garment according to claim 9, in which said lining material is quilted fabric and said support means is an elastic strap attached thereto.
