Description

E. H. SCHUTZ Jan. 21, 1969 SPRING CLIP Filed Sept. 13, 1966 INVENTOR. de/z S :Zwfz
United States Patent 3,422,468 SPRING CLIP Erich H. Schutz, Fraser, Mich, assignor, by mesne assignments, 10 Lear Siegler, Inc., Santa Monica, Calif.,
a corporation 0f Delaware Filed Sept. 13, 1966, Set. N0. 579,163
U.S. Cl. 5259 Int. (II. A47c 23/26 9 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a Clip utilized in a cushion assernbly for retaining the ends 01 sinuous spring strips t0 the front and rear rails of the frame of the assembly.
lt is an object and feature of this invention to provide a novel Clip for securing the ends of a sinuous spring to a frame in a cusl1ion assembly.
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary perspective view 0f a cushion assembly including the Clip of the instant invention secured by a first means to the frame 0f the assembly; and
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary perspective view oi a cushion assembly including the Clip cf the instant invention secured by a second means to the frame 0f the assembly.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals indicate like or corresponding parts in both views, a Cushion assembly is generally shown at 10 and includes a sinuous spring strip 12, a clip for supporting the end of the spring 12 and generally indicated at 14, and a frame 16 for supporting the Clip 14.
The Clip 14 has a substantially U-shaped metallic body including a pair of generally opposed first and seconcl flanges 18 and 20 which are joined by a central web portion 22.
A material 24 is disposecl on the inner face of the Clip body and preferably comprises a paper layer impregnated or coated with a low friction material, such as polyethylene, Teflon or the like.
The first flange 18 has two pair of holes 26 and 28 therethrough. In addition, the first flange also has a fifth hole 30 therethrough. The first flange 18 is longer than the second flange 20, and the first flange is disposed on the frame 16. The frame 16 is preferably made 0f wood. The holes of the two pair of holes 26 and 28 are of equal size and are smaller than the fifth hole 30. The holes of the two pair of holes 26 and 28 are equally spaced from one another and the fifth hole 30 is spaced an equal distance from each of the holes of the two pair 26 and 28.
In the embodiment of FIGURE l, a means comprising the screw 32 is disposed through the fifth hole 30 and into the wooden frame to secure the Clip 14 on the frame 16. Alternatively, a nail may be utilized in plz1ce of the screw 32. In the embodirnent illustrated in FIGURE 2, a staple 34 is disposed in each pair of the two pair of holes 26 and 28. In some environments, a screw 32 or a nail is inserted through the hole 30 to secure the Clip 14 to the wooden frame 16; however, in other environments it is preferable to utilize the staples 34 10 secure the clip to the wooden frame 16. In addition, both means for securing the Clip 14 to the wenden frame 16 may be utilized.
The invention has been described in an illustrative manner and it is to be understood that the terminology which has been used is intended to be in the natura of words of description rather than of limitation.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. lt is, therefore, to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention rnay be practiced otherwise (hau es specifically described.
The embodimenls of the invenlion in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
l. A cushion assembly com rising at least one spring, a Clip supporting the end of said spring, and a frarne f0r supporling said Clip, said Clip having a substantially U- shaped metallic body including a pair of generally op posed first and second flanges joined by a central web portion, said first flange having two pair of holes therethrough, said first flange having a fifth hole therethrough, and means disposecl in one of said fifth hole and said two pair of holes for securing said Clip 10 said frame.
2. An assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said first flange is longer than said second flange, said first flange being disposed 0n said frame, said two pair of holes being of equal size and smaller than said fifth hole.
3. An assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein said holes of said two pair of holes are equally spaced from one another and said fifth hole is spaced an equal distance from each 0f said holes of said two pair.
4. An assembly as Set forth in claim 3 wherein said frame is mz-1de of wood and said means extends through said fifth hole and into said wooden frame to secure said clip on said frame.
S. An assembly as set forth in claim 3 wherein said frame is made of wood and said means extends through said holes of said two pair and into said wooden frarne to secure said Clip on said frame.
6. An assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said means comprises a staple disposed in each pair of said two pair oi holes.
7. A Clip for supporting the end of a spring in a femiture assembly and comprising a substantially U-shaped metallic body including generally opposed first and Second flanges joined by a central Web portion, said first flange having two pair of holes therethrough and adapted to receive staples for securing said clip to a support structure, said first flange having a fifth hole therethrough and adapted to receive means f0r securing said Clip to a support structure.
8. A Clip as set f0rth in claim 7 wherein said first {lange is longer than said second (lange and said holes of said two pair are 0f equal size and smaller than said fifth hole.
9. A clip as set forth in claim 8 wherein said holes of said two pair are equally spaced frorn 0ne another and said fifth hole is spaced an equal distance from each of said holes of said two pair.
