SAW SET. No. 340,967. Patented Apr. 27, 1886.

:JIIIIIIIHIIIIII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD V. ZIMMERMAN, OF FERNW'OOD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO- TI-IIRDS TO GEORGE H. REYNOLDS AND NATHAN S. GILBERT, BOTH SAW- S ET.
?EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 340,967, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed October 10, 1885. Serial No. 179,517. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD W. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fernwood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful-- Improvements in Saw-Sets, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a vertical end elevation of my improved sawset. Fig. 2 is a vertical side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse view of the upper part of the saw-set, taken on a plane, :0 Fig. 4 is an upper view of the side of the dies 1) b, which are shown in end View in Fig. 3, said upper side coxningin contact with the fiat face of the shank c. Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the dies I), showing the side with which it is in contact with its counterpart and its notch d. Fig. 6 shows in an enlarged view three saw-teeth to which my set has been applied.
Like letters of reference denote like parts.
The object of my invention is to produce a y saw-set by means of which the points of the teeth of brier-pointed saw-teeth may be set with the greatest regularity to each other, and at the same time sharpen both the points and the cutting-edges on each side.
The body a of the punch has a shoulder, h, below which it is formed into a fiat-sided shank, e, which forms an angle at g, as seen in Fig. 1, and of which the end or face of the point is of greater length in the direction of the flat face of the shank than it is in the direction transverse to said plane. The blocks or dies b extend from the shoulder h to the point 9, and are preferably formed of two pieces, from each of which is cut a corner, d,,which, when placed together in place, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, form a notch, d, accurately fitting over the point of the saw-tooth. The fiat contact-surfaces of the dies 1) form sharp edges, into which the edges of the point of the saw-tooth are driven, and give them a sharp clean cuttingedge, and thus give to a tooth its desired form, instead of mashing or burring the point of the tooth, as is the case with punches and other saw-sets which set a saw-tooth from its side. It also prevents springing the saw-tooth at its base, as is done in all other sets.
The dies b and body a are held together by a ring, 0, driven up from the lower end of the shank. A screw, f, in the lower end of the shank may be used to change the angle, 9, which the saw-blade i will make with the dies Z).
The saw-teeth ]i; show the action of the set on the teeth of the saw as the set is struck with a hammer, forming offsets or shoulders Z by upsetting and thus sharpening the cutting part of the tooth, leaving what is below the shoul ders Z to be taken out with afile atleisure time and by an unskilled operator, which at the same time also forms a guide and instruction to such person to learn how to hold a file to sharpen a saw. All the parts of this saw-set are made of the best and well tempered steel, so that the same instrument may also be used as a nail-punch, the flat side of the'shank e, as also the screw f, when used, indicating the longitudinal direction of the point of the shank e, which is necessary to know in all nice carpentor-work.
\Vhat I claim is-- 1. In a sawset, the combination, with the shouldered stock or body a, having two flat surfaces forming an angle at g, of the band c and two-part die I), each part having a beveled corner, substantially as specified.
2. In a saw-set, the combination, with the shouldered stock or body a, having two flat surfaces forming an angle at g, of the set-screw f, band 0, and twopart die I), each part having a beveled corner, substantially as specified.
