Description

NITED STATES PATENT' OEEICE.
JAMES J. LOWE, OF MANKATO, MINNESOTA.
SAW-GUMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,324, dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed February 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES J. LOWE, of Mankato, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Saw-Gummers, ot which the following is a specilcation.
The object I have in view is to produce a saw-glimmer consisting of a die-block and a loose hand-punch adapted to be struck with a hammer or sledge, by means ot' which saws can be cut out quickly and neatly, and thc punch will be held and guided firmly without trouble on the part ot' the operator.
My invention consists in the peculiar con struction of my punch and the combination therewith of the die-block, as fully hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof', Figure l is a perspective view ot the punch and die-block, showing a saw-plate (broken away) in position to be cut; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the parts on a smaller scale, and Fig. 3 a top view of the die-block.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in all three gures.
A is the die-block, of the ordinary or any suitable construction, and having the opening B extending vertically through the same. This opening forms the female die and has square cutting-edges. It is of the same shape at its small round end a as the spaces between the saw-teeth, but is ot' greater length than such spaces, and terminates at its other end, b, prei'- erably in square shoulders.
The hand-punch C is, in cross-section, of the same shape as the opening B, and is adapted to t such opening closely.
This punch is of the same form throughout its length, but may, if desired, be broadened at the head. In the round cutting-edge ot' the punch is formed a horizontal slot, D, which is of the depth it is desired to give to the spaces of the saw. This slot is wide enough vertically to receive the sawplate. The punch is inserted in the opening B of the die-block, and the saw-plate is placed on the die-block and its edge entered into the slot D. Then by striking the punch with a hammer or Sledge a piece will be cut out ot' the saw-plate of the shape ot' the punch.
It will be seen that the punch below the slot D, as well as above such slot, being ot' the exact shape of the opening B, and lling such opening completely, said punch will be guided accurately and held firmly While cutting, and need not be stcadied by the operator. This enables the cutting to be done much more quickly and neatly than has been possible heretofore with hand-punches, and with less trouble to the operator'.
What l claim as my invention is- 1. In saw-guminers, the punch O, having horizontal slot D, and being ot' the same shape and size below and above said slot, substantially as described and shown.
2. In saw-gummers, the combination, with the die-block A, having opening B, ot the punch C, provided with horizontal slot D, and being of the same shape and size below and above said slot, substantially as described and shown.
