C. SPRINGER.
WAGDN JACK.
Patented Apr. 6,1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT @Erica CHARLES SPRINGER, OF TIDIOUTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WAGON-JACK.
`15.73'ifCIFIGATIC!N forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,590, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed November 25, 1855. Serial No. 183,945.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES SPRTNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tidi oute, in the county of IVarren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Jacks; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
My invention is an improved jack for use in oiling carriage and wagon axles; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing I have shown a perspective view of iny device, a portion ofthe hollow support being broken away.
In carrying ont my invention I provide a hase, A, upon which I erect a. hollow internally-serewthreaded support, B, as shown; The standard C of the jack is provided with a depending screw-threaded shank, D, which enters the Support B and is held thereby. The upper portion, E, of the standard is provided with a slot, F, and a series of pivotholes, G, on each side of the said slot. The lever H is passed through the slot F and pivoted upon a pin or bolt passed through the pivot-holes G, as will he understood. The short arin of this lever is given the usual curved forni, to provide a rest for the carriage-axle. The long or. operating arln of the lever is provided with a lip, I, which engages a series of teeth, J, formed on a curved raelLbanK, as shown. This rack-har is carried by the standard C, being secured thereto at its ends, as shown.
Instead of forming the 1acl-har integral with the standard, as shown, it could be made separate and bolted or otherwise secured to the standard. I prefer to have it form an integral part of the standard, as thereby the device can be made more eoinpaetly and neatlNo model.)
ly. The lip I is made of suiiieient length to engage the teeth J, whichever of the pivotholes G the pivot of the lever may heinserted through.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. The jack is placed in position and the standard turned in its support until the carriage or wagon axle rests upon the short arm of the lever. of the lever downward the short arm will he raised, and the carriage or wagon consequently lifted, so as to allow the removal of the wheel and oiling of the axle, as will be understood. The lip I will engage the ratchet-teeth, and the lever will consequently be held in the po sition given it.
It will be observed that I have provided a jack which can be usedv with vehicles of any Vheight whatever, as any desired adjustment of the lever can be obtained by means of the series of pivot-holes G and the screw-threaded shank D, working in` the support B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 1. As a new article of manufacture, a lever for wagon jacks, having a curved portion which forms a rest for the axle of the vehicle, and having its long arm provided with a lip, substantially as and for the purposes specilied.
2. The combination, in a wagonjack, of the hollow internally screw threaded support erected upon a suitable hase, a standard having a depending screw-threaded shank work ing in the hollow support, a curved rack-bar secured to the standard, and a lever pivoted to the said standard and provided with a lip which engages the teeth on the curved rackbar, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES SPRINGER.
