Description

1. J. STUART.
Improvement in Lifting-Jacks Patented Aug. 13,1872.
@umtur: /q
avimwmz JOHN J. STUART, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRQVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,449, dated August 13, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jack, invented by JOHN J. STUART, of New York city, and county and State of New York.
Figure I is a side view of my improved lifting-jack, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line a to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved jack for raisin g wagons and other carriages to enable their wheels to be conveniently removed for oiling their axles, and for other uses, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, convenient in use, and effective in operation and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the jack, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a pipe of suitable length, the lower end of which is securely attached to a foot or stand, B, of such a size as to give a stable support to the jack. 0 is a pipefitting into the interior of the pipe A, so as to move up and down in it freely. In the opposite sides of the pipe A, at suitable distances apart, are formed holes a to receive a pin, D, which is inserted beneath the lower end of the pipe (1, to support it in place. To the upper part of the pipe A is attached an arm, E, which is slotted horizontally to receive the bolt F, which serves as a fulcrum to the lever G, which has one or more notches formed in its lower edge to receive the fulcrum-bolt F, as shown in Fig. 1.. To the forward end of the lever G is pivoted the end of the pawl H which has a hook formed upon its free end to pass through a slot, (o in the side of the outer pipe A, and take hold of notches 0' formed in the side of the inner pipe 0, so that the said pipe 0 and any object under which it may be placed may be raised by operating thev lever G. By adjusting the fulcrum-bolt F in the slot in the arm E, and adjusting the lever G upon the said fulcrum-bolt F, a greater or less leverage may be obtained according to the weight of the object to be raised. The pin D should be connected with the arm E, or some other part of the jack by a chain, 01, to prevent it from becoming lost. In case the object to be raised be very heavy, the fulcrum may be connected with the foot B, or the lower part of the pipe A, to bring the lever G into such a position that power may be applied to it with greater advantage. In this case the form of the free end of the pawl H must be changed to adapt.
it to operate properly in the notches c of the inner pipe 0 from its new direction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved liftingjack, formed of the perforated, notched, and slotted concentric pipes A G, the foot or stand B, pin D, fulcrumarm and bolt E F, lever G, and pawl H, said parts being constructed and operating in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
. JOHN J. STUART.
