UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROYAL H. PECK, OF WOLCOTT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND O. M. GIFFORD, OF OADYS FALLS, VERMONT.
IMPROVED CHURN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,815, dated November 26, 1861.
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL H. PEoK, of Wolcott, in the county of Lamoille and State of Vermont, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference beinglhad to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation with a portion of the churn broken away to show the interior construction, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line S S in Fig. 1.
A is the frame-work on which the parts are supported.
B is a tub or churn sitting loosely on the base of the frame. In the interior of this tub, and at one side of the center thereof, I place a frame-work O, composed of two uprights 0 c and several cross-bars c c.
E is an upright shaft or dasher carrying arms e e, which are fitted to pass between the cross-pieces c' c of the frame-work C. This dasher is supported in an upright position by being stepped into the bottom of the tub B and by a bearing in the cross-piece a of the frame A. On the upper end of E, I fix a gearwheel F, which meshes into another gear G on the horizontal shaft H, which latter has bearings on the frame A.
By means of the crank it a rapid rotary motion is imparted to the dasher E, which agitates the cream within the churn B. The frame-work C prevents the cream from assuming a rotary movement.
The cap I is hinged to the cross-bar a, as represented, and is fastened in its place by a hook and staple J. By unhooking and turning back this cap, as shown in red lines, Fig. 2, the dasher E may be readily removed, when the churn B can be also taken from the frame A for convenience in removing the butter, washing, &c. The frame 0 may be also removed for the same purpose, it being fitted in grooves in B, as represented.
It will be observed that the crank-shaft H is supported upon the substantial framing A entirely independent of any support from the tub B, and that the latter is introduced to its place in the frame A and removed therefrom with great facility by the simple opening and closing of the hinged portion I, which latter when closed holds the upright shaftE and its gear-wheel F in the proper relation to both the tub B and the gear-wheel G.
My invention is simple and cheap, easily taken apart and put together to. the extent desired, and is stronger and more easily managed by unskillful operators than any other having the like desirable qualities known to me.
lVhat I claim as my invention is- The combination and arrangement of the frame A, adapted to receive the tub, with its frame-work C, the crank-shaft H and its gearwheel G, mounted thereon, the tub B,the upright revolving dasher E c, with its gear-wheel F, the cross-piece a, and the hinged cap I, the whole operating together in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROYAL H. PEOK. Witnesses:
M. W. TERRILL, ORLO OADY.
