WILLIAM W. BARRETT, oF WAYNE, AND ALBERT'sMITE, oE BAEEINeToN,
' NEW YoEx. y
v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,124, dated May 28, 1878; application iiled Y March 8,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM W. BARRETT, of Wayne, and ALBERT SMITH, of Barrington, in the counties of Steuben and Yates and State of New York, have invented certain new vand. useful Improvements in a Ghurn; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l illustrates a vertical section of our improved churn, with the dashers and their operating mechanism represented in dotted lines as being lifted out of their receptacle, and Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the dashers.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention appertains to certain improvements in churns; and it consists of' a churn having a dasher suspended from the lid or cover hinged to the receptacle, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a receptacle suitably supported upon legs a a. This receptacle is supplied with a hinged cover or lid, B, having a central orifice or aperture, b, for the passage through it of the dashershafts. Or C mark two oppositely-revolving dashers, the beaters of which are arranged in the form ofthe teeth of a comb, and pointing, one series downwardly and the other series upwardly, and moving past each other, by which the butyraceous particles are more completely collected and thoroughly comminuted. The dasher C is attached to a shaft, c, passing up through the orifice b of the hinged cover B, and having its outer or upper end secured to a beveled gear-wheel', d, bearing upon a cross-piece of an upright frame or support, D, fastened upon the said hinged cover or lid. The dasher C is attached to a tubular shaft, c', up through which the shaft c passes,
and which is secured at its upper or outer end to a beveled gear-wheel, d', bearing upon a second cross-piece of the frame or support D. It w-ill thus be seen that the dashers and their adjuncts are suspended in position and supported upon the hinged lid or cover of the receptacle, by which the dashers can be removed from their receptacle after churning, to permit of the removal of the butter, &c.,
with the opening of the hinged lid or cover,
and the same be supported in an elevated position when thus removed from the receptacle.
Gearing with the wheels d d' is a large beveled gearwheel, e, the axisl e of which is supported in and passes through an upright of the frame D. v The projecting end of said axis is provided with a crank or handle, f, with which to operatethe churn.
It will be observed that the axis e is provided beyond the frame or support D with an additional support or bearing, which may form a tubular extension, g, of said frame, or be otherwise secured thereto. This extension g also serves as a means,
we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Iii a churn, its dasher or dashers suspended from the lid or cover B hinged to the receptacle inclosing said dasher or dashers, substantially as shown and described, by which the dasher or dashers may be lifted out of the receptacle with the opening of the lid or cover, and be supported in an elevated position when thus removed, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own invention We aix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. BARRETT. ALBERT SMITH.
