AUTOMATIC ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,155, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed June 3, 1885. Serial No. 167,534.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN N. IVES, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Attachment for Gas Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an automatic device for operating the cock in the gas servicepipe of gas-stoves, to partially cut off the flow of gas to the stoves when no object to be heated is in the stove, thus effecting a saving in gas; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

A represents an ordinary gas-stove with grate B, and (l represents an ordinary gasburner placed beneath the grate B, and D E represent pipes through which gas is supplied to the burner C.
In pipe D is fitted the main cut-off cook a and service-cock b,which is opened and closed by the movement of the plate F, on which any object to be heated in the stove is placed. The cock is arranged to admit a full supply of gas to the burner 0 when the plate F is lowered to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.1, (the position it will assume under ihe weight of any object placed upon it to be heated,) and to admit only a small supply of gas to the burner when the plate is in its nor- -mal position, (that shown in full lines in Fig.
1the position it will assume when no object is upon it.)
In order that the plates F may have pivotal movement, and thus operate the cock I), I attach it to the lever G, pivoted at c in one side of the stove, and connect the outer arm of the lever G to the cock by the pivoted connecting links or toggles cl 6. A counterbalance-weight, f, is placed on the lever G, which elevates the plate F and lowers the outer arm of lever G when not-hing is on the plate F, and by ad (No model.)
justing this weight along the arm the proper action of the parts may be insured with different articles to be heated, and a stop-screw, G, is fitted in a flange, h, below the lever Gr, near the pivot 0, so that the distance of downward movement of the outer arm of lever G may be regulated to cause a greater or less supply of gas to be admitted to the burner, as desired, when no object is being heated.
The plate F may be a plain arm or plate; but for heating tools-such, for example, as book-makers, tinsmiths, or other tools-I prefer to form it with the side projection, F, at one end, in which is formed the curved slot f. so that by loosening set-screw t the plate F may be moved backward or forward in the stove to suit tools of different lengths and sizes, to bring the parts to be heated directly over the grate and burner.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a burner,-a supply-pipe for the same, and a valve in said pipe, provided with an arm, of a lever having one end extending over the burner, and the other provided with a weight, a link connecting the weighted end of the lever and the arm of the valve, and an adj listing-screw impinging against the lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with aburner, of a lever having a portion extending above the burner, said portion consisting of a plate provided with a curved slot, and an adjustingscrew passing through said slot and connecting said plate with the main part of the lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a burner, a supply-pipe for the same, and a valve in said,
pipe, provided with an arm, of a weighted lever having one end extending over the hunt er and the other provided with a weight, a link connecting the weighted end of the lever and'the arm of the valve, an adjusting-screw impinging against the lever, and the plate adjnstably connected to said lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
