To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. Knaonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lestershire, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas-Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic gas controllers for controlling the supply of gas to gas burners; and it comprises a controller arranged and adapted to turn on the gas when the burner is used, and to turn off the gas when the burner is not in use; it further comprises such an automatic controller combined with adjustable means controlling the gas supply whereby the'gas can be main tained at any predetermined rate of flow when the burner is not in use and can be illcreascd when the burner is in use and automatically decreased to the predetermined rate of flow when the burner is not in use: it also comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts: all as more fully hereinafter set forth and as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 shows a gas burner or stove provided with the automatic controller in position to permit full flow of gas to the burner. Fig. 2. shows the burner when not in use, and Fig. 8. shows in detail the structure of the spring valve for controlling the gas supply.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated the gas stove or burner A has attached to it by means of a screw-clamp B a controlling device comprising the lever C pivoted to the clamp B, the ring D arranged to project above the surface of the burner and to be depressed to the level of said surface, the spring valve G, and the gas supply pipe F leading to the ring E of the burner. lhe adjustable screw 1 of the clamp B enables the attachment to be adjusted or removed. The gas supply pipe is provided with the usual cook or valve 7 for shutting off the gas completely or to any desired extent, and is also provided with a small pipe 5 leading to a pilot burner 6, whereby a small flame can be kept constantly burning to light the larger burner when the gas is turned on.
The valve G is a self-actuating spring valve adapted to close itself by means of the spring when permitted to do so. The stem of this valve is pivoted at 2 to the lever G which in the embodiment of the invention illustrated is provided with an inclined surface 2. On the stem below the lever C is a rotatable washer 2 having a handle 3 and an inclined surface corresponding to the surface 2 of the lever C. The object of this washer is to permit the spring valve to be opened to a greater or less extent even when the ring D of the lever C is not depressed. By turning this washer the inclined surfaces turn on each other and the upper surface 2 of the lever G is raised, as shown in Fig. 5. and the valve held open, or partly open. By means of this adjustment the gas can be either cut off altogether, except for the pilot flame, or can be left low or partly turned on or off, and it will still be turned on when a dish or kettle such as A in Fig. 1. is placed on the ring D. When this dish is placed on the stove it depresses the ring D which raises the other end of the lever C and opens the valve D. When the dish is removed the spring valve closes, raising the ring D as shown in Fig. 2. The washer 2 permits the valve to close entirely or to be kept from closing or adjusted as desired.
It will thus be seen that the present invention enables the gas to be automatically controlled by the article placed on the stove and in addition enables the automatic controlling device to be itself controlled and rendered inoperative to a greater or less extent as desired.
