UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZEBEDEE B. SHROPSHIRE, OF OOLTEWAH, AND ANDREWV J. BERRYHILL, OF CLEVELAND, TENNESSEE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,108, dated March 16. 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ZEBEDEE B. SHRoP- SHIRE and ANDREW J. BERRYHILL, both citizens of the United States, residing, respectively,at Ooltewah and Cleveland, in the counties of James and Bradley and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar- Couplers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked I 5 thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has relation to car-couplers, and more particularly to that form of ordinary draw-head and link-and-pin coupler, in which a device operated from the sides or top of the car is employed to guide the link into the opposite draw-head in the act of coupling, and the object is to provide a simple and safe means for operating the ordinary link and pin without the necessity of the brakeman going between the cars, thus avoiding all danger to life and limb; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter 3o more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the same letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of one end of an ordinary freight or box car having our invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the ends of two cars, showing the position of the parts when the draw-heads are 4 coupled.
A is the draw-head, and it is provided with the ordinary link, B, and coupling-pin G.
D is a shaft, mounted in brackets d, across the end of the car, and provided with a central crank, d, to which the coupling-pin O is attached, so that the said pin 0 may be raised or lowered from the sides of the car by means of the arms E E, or from the top of the car by the rod F, attached to the short arm a of the shaft D.
G is a crank-shaft, likewise secured to the front or end of the car by the brackets b, and having operating-arms H, extending on each side of the car, so that said shaft may be operated without going between the cars.
sleeve downward below the line of the bottom of the draw-heads after the link has been inserted in the opposite draw-head.
In operation the device is'used as follows: The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the link is raised by the sleeve through the medium of the shaft and handle or arm H from the side of the car, so as to enter the link in the adjoining draw-head, and as they come closer together the draw heads strike the sleeve and force it below, as above described.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shaft G, provided with the triangular sleeve K and operating-arms H H, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
