J.-MARTZ. Gar Coupling.
No.24o,155.
Patented April 12,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MARTZ, OF WINAMAO, INDIANA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,155, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed February 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winamac, in the county of Pulaski and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a car-coupling or coupling device for railroad cars; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I secure in the adjacent draw-heads or bumpers a coupling-link. One of these links being in each draw-head, it will be understood that they are locked by a gravital pin coupling together the cars, and that the links and draw-heads are adapted for efficient service in this art by a construction and arrangement which will allow the link of one draw-head, having beveled advancing end to pass above or below the link in the adjacent draw-head, as will be explained in this specification, and fully shown in the drawings;
It being understood that the coupling-links are. in duplicate, and that duplex couplinglinks serve as the locking mechanism between the cars, in connection with the gravital coupling-pins, the details of the invention consist, essentially, in the features and elements hereinafter specified and shown.
In carrying out the invention in detail I emply slotted duplex levers having any convenient or desirable form and adaptation for the service mentioned, said levers being pivoted together, near their inner extremities, each to the truck-head, by a pin or boltwhich passes through the slot and is secured to such truck, and one of which carries the coupling-pin. The coupling-pin is hinged or pivoted in such a manner that the coupling-link of one car or truck will recede upon the pressure of the link of the adjacent car, and said pin does not engage the duplex links until such links have been forced past the pivot and the pin gravitates between the links.
It will further be observed that the hanging coupling-pins are automatic couplers, and that the slotted levers serve only as means for uncoupling or elevating the coupling-pins out of locking position with the links.
To enable others to construct and use my invention I will describe it in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially-in section; Fig. 2. an end view, showing the levers and gravital locking-pin; and Fig. 3 is atop plan, and Fig. 4 a detached view, of the pivotal link.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the truck or car body, having wheels to and an ordinary draw head, B, with flaring mouth I), and perforation c to receive a lock-pin, C, suspended in a vertical position from the pivotal point (1 of levers D, having slots d, and pivoted to the frame by bolts d operating through the said slots d.
E represents the coupling-link, pivoted in the draw-head B, as shown at c, and having beveled surfaces e. I
The slotted levers D are pivoted together upon their near inner extremities,-and approximately near this point is suspended the lockpin 0, which operates in the longitudinal slot 1) as upon a pivot to lock the adjacent link E within the draw-head B. The slotted levers D, which support the lock pin 0, are curved laterally in such a manner that .the pin 0 will be afforded a longitudinal oscillatory motion from its pivotal point, operating through the slot 1).
I am aware of the construction shown in Patent No. 200,752, and do not broadly claim such device. a
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is-
In a car-coupler, the draw-head B, in combination with the link E, pivoted therein, and beveled at e, and the pin 0, and levers D, sub stantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK P. KIsnveER, WILLIAM KISINGER.
