TRAVELING-CAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,033, dated March 16, 1886. Application filed October 10, 1885. Serial No. 179,542. (No model.)

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. CARSKADON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Keyser, in the county of Mineral and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TravelingOaps; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is aside view of myimprovedtravcling-cap as shown when not inflated. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cap as it appears when in position and inflated. Fig. 3isaperspective view of the cap, showing more clearly the expansible back portion'ot' the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the cap, showing the air-bag inflated; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 00 min Fig. 4.

My invention has relation to a certain new and useful construction of traveling-caps made of silk, wool, cotton, or any other suitable material, whereby, while the cap will answer the same purposes as an ordinary wellfitting travelingcap, it shall be so constructed as to be adapted to form a perfect pillow or headrest, cushioning the head of the wearer, so as to relieve him from the jar of the car or boat when the same is in motion. To this end I construct the cap Awith a rim, B, the back part of which is made elastic or expansible, either by crimping it, as shown in the drawings, or by any other suitable means.

In the space between the body of the cap and the rim or turned-up portion B is placed a bag, 0, of rubber, or any other suitable airtight material, adapted to be inflated or filled with atmospheric air by means of a mouthpiece, D, having a suitably-constructed selfclosing air-valve. Under ordinary circumstances, when this bag or ainreceptacle is not expanded or inflated, it will fold so closely as not to change the contour or shape of the cap; but when inflated it will form an air pillow or cushion for the back part of the head, as

shown in Fig. 2, cushioning the head of the traveler and relieving him from the unpleas ant jar incident to traveling in railway-carriages or on board of steamers. This rubber back may be made either removable or attached permanently to the cap, as may be desired. I prefer, however, to attach it permanently to the body of the cap between the back of the same and the upturned rim, so that it will always be in position ready for use.

It will be seen that when the air is exhausted from the expansible bag 0 by opening the valve the bag will collapse so as to lie flat against the body of the cap, where it is effectually concealed by the rim, so that the cap will present the same appearance as an ordinary Well-fitting traveling-cap.

Having th us described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. As an improvement in traveling-caps, the combination of a traveling-cap provided with an upturned rim having a plaited or crimped portion, and an elastic bag or air-receptacle adapted to be inflated with atmospheric air, and arranged between the body portion of the cap and the said plaited or crimped portion of the upturned rim thereof, substantially as described.

As an improvement in traveling-caps, the combination, with the herein-described travcling-cap provided with an upturned rim having a plaited or crimped back portion, of the elastic bag or pouch disposed between the back part of the body of the cap and the said plaited or crimped portion of the rim, and the mouthpiece arranged in the center of the top of the cap, having a self-closing valve and communicating with the said elastic air-pouch, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
