HORACE GARST, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
HEAD-SCREEN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,712,dated February 23,1886.
Application -led September 11, 1885. Serial No. 176,799. (No model.)
T9 all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I4, HORACE GARsT, of Council Blus, in the county of Pottawattanie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head- Screens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. j
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming' part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.:
, Figure lis an elevation of one of my improved screens, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is anelev'ation of the same detached. Fig. 3 is.1a"view showing the forward part of the screen raised. Fig. 4 is a view showing the whole of the screen raised and arranged upon the hat.
The object of this invention is to provide screens forprotecting the heads th l wearers ftom mosquitos, ilies, and other insects, andv from dust, and which shall be so constructed as to be worn over an ordinary hat without inconvenience. j. a5 The invention consists in a head-screen constructed with an elastic or non-elastic band at Vits upper edge, an elastic or non-elastic band at a little distance from its lower edge, and with a flexible series of weights along its lower 3o edge, as will be hereinafter fully described andclaimed. 4
The body A of the screen is made of vmosquito-netting or fine gauze, and is in the shape of a bag, open at bttom and open. or closed at top. The body A is made of a greater diameter than the hat upon which it is to be worn, and at its upper edgeis formed ahem, in which is run an elastic or non-elastic band or cord, B,- of such a size or so adjusted as to fit upon 4o an desired part of the hat-body, and of such an elasticity' or so adj usted as to retain its position upon the part. of the hat-body'upon lwhich it may be placed. Around the body A, ana little distance from its lower end, is formed ashirr, in which.is inserted an elastic Vor nonelastic band, C, -which is designed to conne the said-body A loosely around the neck of the wearer. -At the lower edge of the body A ble series of weights, D. The series of-weights can be formed by securing shot in a tubular v is formed a hem, in which is inserted a ilexi-4 `the said weights will be supported by the shoulders of the wearer. With this constructionthe' lower part of the screen will adjust itself automatically to rest upon the neck and shoulders of the wearer insuch a manner as to leave the head and hat free from any pressure from the weight of the lower part ofthe screen. With this construction, also, the wearer can raise any part of the screen-as, for instance, in front-as illustrated in Fig. 3, to allow him to eat, drink, or smoke, by raising the forward partvof the flexible series of weights D andv laying them upon the hat-brim, the band or cord C resting against the forehead of the wearer, all the other parts of the head and neck, except the desired exposed part, being fully protected. When the raised part of the series of weights D is removed from the hatbrim and allowed to drop, the lower part of the screen will again adjust itself in place automatically. With this construction, also, the entire screen can be raised above the hat-rim and worn around the hat, as illustrated in Figl. 8 5
I am aware that a mosquito-guard has been composed of a frame-work covered with netY ting and adapted to be drawn close around the neck of the wearer; and I do not claim such as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A head-screen, A, made substantially as herein shown and described, with a band, B, at its upper end, to lit upon a hat -body, an elastic or non-elastic band, C, in itslower part, to fit loosely around the neck of the wearer, and with a flexible series of weights, D, at its lower edge, to rest upon the shoulders, breast, and back of the wearer and be supported by rocY the said shoulders, as set forth.
HORACE GARST.
