[NVE/WOR A TTOHIVEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD F. BICKERTON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
SUNSI-IADE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD F. BICKER- ToN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sunshades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in sun shades designed especially for use in shielding the wearer from the sun at ball games and other athletic sports, fishing and the like; and the invention has for an obj ect to provide a shade which is easily applicable to an ordinary hat and can be adjusted to any desired position around the hat in order to properly protect the wearer from the rays of the sun; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the shade detached from a hat.
In carrying out the invention, I provide what for convenience of reference, I term a main frame A, having means for supporting the shade proper B and provided with a clasp A to engage upon a hat crown. As shown, the main frame A is formed from a length of wire bent as best shown in Fig. 2, to produce a frame A2, which encircles the marginal edge of the cover B and adjacent to its ends, the wire of the frame is bent forming the approximately circular clasp A to encircle the crown D of the hat and with the laterally projecting shank A3 between the clasp A and the cover frame A2, such shank A3 extending across the brim D of the hat, as shown in Fig. 1, so the cover may depend from the edge of the hat, as shown in Fig. 1. Adjacent to the juncture of the shank A3 with the cover frame A2, the terminals A4 of the wire are twisted around the adjacent portions of the cover frame in such manner as to brace and reinforce the parts at the juncture of the shank A3 with the cover frame.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 3, 1911.
Patented Nov. '7, 1911.
Serial No. 631,010.
The cover B may be of any suitable fabric or other material adapted to protect the wearer from the rays of the sun and it will be noticed that by the fitting of the clasp A around the crown D of the hat, the shade proper may be adjusted around the edge of the hat to any desired position to properly protect the wearer.
The invention is simple, inexpensive, and can be easily carried as the wire will permit the bending of the clasp A down alongside the shade proper and the folding of the shade proper in any desired way to facilitate the placing of the same in the pocket so that the shade can be conveniently carried to and from the ball-park or other place where it may be desired for use.
It will be noticed that the shank A3 is double armed and that it can be contracted or expanded adjacent to its juncture with the clasp A to fit the clasp to hat crowns of different sizes.
Manifestly the clasp may be made in different sizes and particularly with shanks of different lengths to correspond to hat brims of different widths.
I claim:
The sun-shade herein described comprising a shade proper, and a wire frame having a cover frame to extend around the margin of the shade proper, a clasp to encircle and engage upon a hat crown, a shank-like portion integral with the clasp and connecting the clasp with thev cover frame, said shank-like portion being double armed whereby it can be contracted or expanded adjacent to its juncture with the clasp, to fit the clasp to hat crowns of dierent sizes and the terminals of the wire being twisted around the cover adjacent to the juncture thereof, with the shank extending from the clasp, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
RICHARD F. BICKERTON.
