SCRIBING COMPASS OR DIVIDER Filed Dec. 7, 1966 INVVENTOZ F250 H. L/Efazv; 5':
ATTOENEY United States Patent 3,358,371 SCRIBING COMPASS 0R DIVIDER Fred H. Liesong, Sn, 12925 Tulane St., Brookfield, Wis. 53005 Filed Dec. 7, 1966, Ser. No. 599,813 2 Claims. (Cl. 33-27) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A scribing compass or divider of the type used by pattern makers including a pair of legs provided with a pair of integral head portions pivoted together. Elongated extensions are pivoted to the free ends of the legs, and links connect the head portions and the extensions to maintain the extensions in parallel relation during movement of the legs, and a knob cam arrangement for a fine adjustment of one of said extensions.
Background of the invention The prior art closest to the invention as known to the applicant is the patent to Vlcek, No. 1,903,393. The present invention has fewer parts and is an improvement for simplicity.
Description of the invention In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a front elevation of a scribing compass or divider embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
FIG. 3 is a top elevational view.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation partially broken away of the head portions as in FIG. 1 taken from the rear side.
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 55 of FIG. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral refers to the device generally, having a pair of legs 11 and 12 with integral head portions 13 and 14 joined by the pivot member 15. Head portion 13 has an arcuate slot at 16 to accommodate movement therein of the bolt 17 which is fixed in the head portion 14 and extends through the slot 16 and carries knurled nut 18. The legs 10 and 11 carry the pivoted extensions 19 and 20, each of which are provided with a scribing element 21 releasably secured by the threaded means 22 or may be fitted with a pen or pencil as desired.
The legs 10 and 11 are connected integrally with the head portions 13 and 14 which latter are connected to the extensions 19 and 20 by means of the links 23 and 24 pivoted at their lower ends to the opposed lateral elements 25 and 26.
The upper end of the link 23 is pivotally connected with the head portion 14. The upper end of the link 24 is similarly connected with a pin 27 on cam 28 which is revoluble by the integral knurled knob 29 whereby a fine adjustment of the extension 20 may be effected.
In use, when the knurled nut 18 is loose, the legs 11 and 12 may be manually spread and set by tightening the nut 18. The extension 28 may then be moved in a fine adjustment by manipulating the knurled knob 29, after which the device 10 may be employed in the usual manner.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A compass or divider including a pair of legs, integral circular head portions thereon, pivot means for pivotally mounting the head portions together, extensions pivotally mounted on said legs, link members pivoted to and connecting the head portions and said extensions to maintain parallel relation of said extensions during movement of the legs, and a combination knob cam rotatably mounted in one head portion, an oiT-center pin on said cam connected with one link for fine adjustment of the extension associated therewith.
2. A device as in claim 1, and scribing means disposed in the free ends of said extensions.
