To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AURELIUS TRUE BAR- LOW, of Marshfield, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Roof-Scaffolds and other Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a clamp of peculiar construction adapted to be used on shingled roofs for forming a roof-scaffold, to be used in place of the ordinary scaffolding in putting on shingles, climbing sloping roofs,

and other purposes, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the drawing represents a view in perspective of a shingled roof in part with my scaffoldclamp applied.

In applying the invention to a shingled roof any number of the clamps may be placed on the roof, but two only are shown in the drawing, and are represented as carrying, by means of suitable attached supports, a plank, P, to form a scaffold, upon which heavy weights can be laid with perfect safety. These clamps are constructed, applied, and secured substantially as follows, each clamp being similarly constructed, so that the description of one will answer for all.

Ais a flat plate, which is inserted underneath one of the shingles, s, of the roof, as shown. This plate has attached to it at or near its one end an upper arm, B, which carries a clamping-screw, 0, having a bearingplate, D, attached to its lower end. Said bearing-plate is slotted, to receive through it the arm B, up and down, which said plate is made adjustable by means of the screw 0, and when borne down by the screw serves to se curely clamp between it and the lower plate, A, or grip onto the shingle s. Securely fastened to or made in one piece with the bearingplate D, at or near the end to which the screw is applied, is a toe or upright plate, E, against which and the corresponding plate of an adjacent clamp a straight-edge, F, may be placed when shingling the roof, to provide for laying the shingles perfectly true without the aid of a chalk-line or any other guide. Around and about the screw 0 of each clamp, above the arm B, is a ball, G, to which is hinged or pivoted, as at b, a lever spike or support, H, for the plank P. This lever spike or support is represented as consisting of a lever slotted at its one end where hinged to the ball, and provided with any number of small pointed projections or spikes on the under side of its opposite end, to stick into or hold on the roof to assist in holding the clamp in place. By its hinged or pivoted connection with theball G it can be placed at any desired angle.-

By slackening the screws 0 of the shingle or scaffold clamps, which screws work through screw-threaded aperturesjn the arms B, the clamps may be shifted from time to time to adjust them to different positions on the roof as the work progresses, or as other circumstances may require.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a clamp for roof-scaffolds, the combination, with the plate A, arm B, and screw 0, of the slotted bearing-plate D, as shown and described.

2. The plate D, with the attached upright plate E, in'combination with plate A, arm B, and screw 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The ball G and lever-spike H, hinged to the ball, in combination with the screw 0, arm B, and plate A, substantially as shown and described.
