SHINGLING-SCAFFOLD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,324, dated September 21, 1880,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD A. H. ASH- LOCK, of Rockport, in the county of Spencer and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Scaffold for Shin gling Roofs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it apio pertains to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention rela-tes to an improved adjustable bracket for repairing and shingling the roofs of houses 5 and it consists, essentially, of two metallic frames ofpeculiar construction, havin g connected thereto adjustable bands or yokes for carrying chalk and line boxes, and

2o provided with a right-'angular foot-rest at the bottom, and with hooks atthe upper part thereof for engagement with chains, and with ropes and pulleys for adjusting the Iapparatus to the varied positions required for laying the shin- 2 5 gles, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, A represents vthe 3 5 roof of a house partially shingled. B represents the metallic frames, formed somewhat similar to a stirrup at the bottom, for the reception of the right-angular foot-piece C, and provided at the top with the hooks D, for engagement with the chains ct and ropes b, as

shown.

E represents the chalk and line boxes, which are attached to the upright part of the frames B by means of metallic yokcs or bands e, which 4 5 are pivotcd at d, and, encircling the boxes, are secured at the top by the sliding bands @,iittin g over the loose end of said yokes, as fully shown in Fig. 2, said boxes being divided into two compartments, the one, j", of which is to beV (No model.)

filled with loose lumps of chalk, andthe other, 5o g, having a windlass, h, around which is wound the line t', which passes through the chalk to the box on the opposite side, as fully shown iu Fig. 1.

F represents fork-rests of a V shape, which are pivoted to the upper part of the metallic frames B, the projecting ends 7c of which are adapted to stick into the roof, as shown.

rlhe construction of my invention being as described, it will be'observed that in the oper- 6o ation of the same the apparatus is adjusted upon the root'of the house, commencing at the eaves and gra-dually drawing it up as the shingling progresses by means of the ropes, which are connected at one end to the hooks the top of the metallic frames, the other end passing through pulleys Z, attached to grappling-hooks G, adapted to catch under the shingles on the opposite side of the roof. The chalk-line is capable of heilig readily 7o chalked for use by turning either of the cranks of the windlasscs in the chalk-boxes. As one row of shingles is laid the line for the next succeeding row is readily struck by pulling the chalk-line in a manner well known.

The advantages of my invention will be readily apparent without a more minute description, inasmuch as it combines in its construction and operation a high degree of utility and safety with a rea-dy adaptation to the 8o purpose contemplated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful isj The hereinbefore-described rooiin g clamp or scaffold, consisting of the metallic frames B, the foot-rest C, hooks D, and fork-rests F, and adapted for operation in connection with the chains a., ropes b, pulleys Z, and grapplinghooks G, substantially as and for the rpurpose specified.
