No. 328 492. Patented Oct. 20, 1885.

U'NirEn grams LEWVIS E. KLUGH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,492, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed March 5, 1885.
To all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs E. KLUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-l3urning Lamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to that class of oil-burning lamps known as central-draft lamps, and my invention consists in the general construction of parts or means for feeding the oil with the wick-raising device, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed outin the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of the oil-feeding wick and supports. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective of the wickraising tube. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the lightingwick.
In the drawings, 13 is the bowl or fount of the lamp; D, the base-standard; O, the ventilating-fount support, A, the air-flue, passing through the lamp-bowl; R, the wick-raising tube; 25, outside cylinder; d d, concave-convex ventilator; 0 o, chimney guards or galleries; m, the common cone; n, the spreader, which is also old; 8, a met-a1 disk or shield, which is common; \V, the usual thumb-wheel and wick-raising shaft; S, the wick-supporting ring. a are wire loops anchored in said ring, over which the wicks X are supported, as shown in Fig. 3. Said ring has an external annular screw-thread, E, (see Figs. 1 and 3,) which engages with the threads of the common lampfount ring, Z. The ring S is also provided with an internal annular screwthread, E (see Fig. 1,) into which thethreaded end of the outside cylinder, t, engages. V
is the common anchor-wire for supporting the spreader n. The air-flue A passes up through the lamp-bowl B in the usual way, having its lower end attached to the bottom of the fount Serial No. 157,755. (No model.)
or bowl. Said bowl is formed of sheet metal. I provide it with the usual filler and cap, f.
The standard D is of theusual form. Iprovide the upper end with the screw-thread E, over which I screw the perforated ventilatingcup 0.
The wicks X, attached to the ring S, extend from said ring down to the bottom of the lamp-bowl, and are used exclusively for raising or bringing the oil up to the top of said lamp-bowl.
The tube R, for raising the wick 9, passes through the ring S between the cylinder tand air-flue A. The wick 9 lies within the tube R, its inward-turned teeth t penetrating the said wick. The tube B has the series of openings P, which are common, to engagewiththc spur-wheel on the shaft having the common thumb-wheel,W. I provide the tube R with alternate bars a and longitudinal openings h, as shown in Fig. 4..
It will be observed that when the tube R and its wick g are in position said wick comes in contact through the openings h with the oil-elevating wick X, thereby taking oil from said wick or wicks. By this arrangement the burning-wick g is kept supplied with oil freely, even after said wick has become too short to reach the oil in the lamp.
The wick g, I form generally as shown in Fig. 5, having its edges united in the upper portion, leaving the lower edges free. By this arrangement, when the wick is long, it freely folds or is well spread within the oil.
Having thus fully set forth my present invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I claim The combination, in a central-draft lamp, of the ring S, provided with supports for sustaining the feed-wicks, the central-draft tube, the slotted wick-conveyg'ng tube, and spurwheel for operating the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWVIS E. KLUGH.
