Description

Oct. 25, 1966 D. v. WILLS COMBINATION TIE-VEST DEVICE Filed Feb. 8, 1965 nwewrap DAV/0 1 was ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,280,404 COMBINATION TIE-VEST DEVICE David V. Wills, 4828 Brown St.. Philadelphia, Pa. Filed Feb. 8, 1965, Ser. No. 430,975 8 Claims. (Cl. 2-102) The invention relates to an article of clothing, and more particularly to a reversible combination tie-vest device.
The invention provides an improved reversible combination tie-vest device with an adjustable neck band for lengthening or shortening the tie-band. The device also allows the removal of the tie band and use of the vest article without same. The tie-vest device is also reversible, and is provided with waist clips allowing easy reversibility.
It is therefore a primary object of the invention to provide a new and improved combination tie-vest device providing an adjustable band for lengthening or shortening the tie portion thereof and allowing removal of the tie portion for use of the article without same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combination tie-vest device which is readily reversible and is provided with waist clips allowing easy reversal of the article.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combination tie-vest device having a unitary construction including a tie band which may readily be tied by the wearer about the neck of a shirt garment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the following detailed description of the invention is read in conjunction with the claims, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of a reversible combination tie-vest device embodying the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the tie-vest device of FIGURE 1 applied to a shirt garment of a wearer,
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the blank form of the clipping means of FIGURE 3 prior to its being bent into final form,
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the device shown in FIGURE 1 illustrating its application, with its tie portion removed, to a shirt garment of a wearer, and
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of the top portion of the tie-vest device with its tie portion removed and used with a neck band about the collar of a shirt garment for application to the shirt garment of a wearer.
Like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the figures, the reversible tie-vest device 10 comprises a vest panel 12 which has an upwardly narrowing portion 14 connecting at its top 16 with a connecting means 17 joined with a tie band portion 18 having an end 20. The lower portion 22 of the vest panel 12 is provided with arcuate bottom edges 24, 26, forming an intermediate V-noticed edge region 28 with two bottom vest apex points 30, 32 all of a unitary construction.
The bottom portion 34 of the vest panel 12 provides laterally extending regions 36, 38 formed by the bottom edges 24, 26 and the upper edges 39, 40 of the vest panel 12. The side portions 36, 38 of the vest panel 12 are provided with loops 42, 44 which pass through the openings 46, 48 of vest attachment means 50, 52. The vest attachment means 50, 52, may be formed of a blank of material 50 which may be of metal and bent into an M-shaped form with opposite tongues 54, 56, and a center portion 58. The center portion 58 has the extending portion 60 containing the slot openings 46.
The upper portion 14 of the vest panel 12 is provided proximate its top 16 with a flexible and bendable strip element 62 which may be secured between the front and back layers of material 64, 66 of the vest panel 12. The strip element 62 may be of metallic or other suitable material. The section 68 of the connecting means 17 is also seemed at the top 16 of the vest panel 12 and is provided with a loop 70 at its extending end for retaining the hook element 72 of the connecting means 17. A second section 74 of the connecting means 17 is provided with a looped end 76 for detachably engaging the hook 78 of the element 72. One end 80 of the section 74 is connected with a slidablyadjustable buckle 82 which is movable along the looped portion 84 of the section 74 for shortening or lengthening the extension of the section 74 of the connecting means 17. The sections 68 and 74 of the hook element 72 may be made of strips of elastic or inelastic flexible material.
The end 86 of the section 74 ofthe connecting means 17 is connected with the end 88 of the tie portion 18 of the tie-vest device 10. The tie portion 18 may also be provided with two layers of material 90, 92 on opposite sides corresponding to the layers of material 64 and 66 of the vest panel 12.
In use when the combination tie-vest device 10 is worn, as shown in FIGURE 2, the vest panel is applied to the front of the shirt garment 94 shown in dashed lines, with the upwardly extending portion 14 directed toward the neck of the wearer and the connecting portion 17 extending about the collar 96 of the shirt garment 14. The tie portion 18 is formed into a knot 98 in a conventional manner and extends downwardly, with its end 20 at the bottom, in front of the vest portion 12 of the device 10. The side regions 36, 38 of the vest panel 12 are secured by clipping the attachment means 50, 52 over the upper edge 100 (shown by dashed lines) of the trousers 101 of the wearer. The attachment means 50, 52 are thus secured by receiving the upper edge of the trousers between the tongue portion 54 and the center or intermediate portion 58 of their respective attachment means 50, 52. The attachment means 50, 52 affords easy reversal of the tie-vest device 12 by allowing clipping with the trousers between the opposite tongue 56 and the center portion 58 of respective attachment means 50, 52 when the device 10 is reversed.
By its reversibility, combination tie-vest device 10 provides additional utility n vew of the diierent desgns or ornamentation which may be presented by the layers 64, 66 of the vest panel 12 and the layers 90, 92 of the tie portion 18 on opposite sides of the combination tie-vest device 10. The fact that the tie portion 18 may :be detached and reversibly attached by the connection means 17 also increases the number of combinations which may be achieved in the designs or ornamentations presented by the combination tie-vest device 10 and which can be chosen by the wearer.
FIGURE 6 discloses the manner in which the combination tie-vest device 10 may be applied to the shirt 102 of the wearer with the tie portion 18 detached. The attachment means 50, 52 are similarly attached in the manner described in connection with FIGURE 2, while the upper portion 14 of the vest panel 12 has its metallic element 62 bent to form an edge 104 which is positioned over the top edge 106 of the shirt 102. The metallic element 62 in its bent condition maintains the fold 104 at the top of the vest panel 12, forming a hook with its downwardly extending portion with edge 16 extending along the inside of the collar 108 of the shirt 102. This maintains the vest in position and provides an article of clothing which is different in structure and operation from the conventional or prior art vest garments.
A modified form of application of the combination tievest device is disclosed in FIGURE 7. In this application, the device 10 has its upper portion 14 folded to form an edge 104 having its downwardly extending extremity passed under a neck band 110. The neck band 110 may be made of elastic material and is provided with an attachment hook means 112. The band 110 passes about the collar 108 of the shirt 102 and provides a means for securing the top 14 of the device 10 proximate the collar 108 of the shirt 102 with its extending end 16 passing behind the neck band 110 and behind the upwardly extending portion 14 of the vest panel 12.
The Various manners in which the combination tie-vest device 10 may be used with or without the tie portion 18 and the reversal of the device 10 as a whole or with the independent reversal of the tie portion 18, provides a highly versatile and useful article of clothing.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention may find wide application with appropriate modification to meet the individual design circumstances, but without substantial departure from the essence of the invention.
