Description

(No Model.)
I J. .M. SMYTH.
1 IRONING TABLE. No. 325,985. Patented Sept. 8, 1885',
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. SMYTH, OF WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA.
lRONlNG-TABLE.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,985, dated September 8 1885.
' Application filed November 26, 1884. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. SMYTH, of Windsor, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario,'0anada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact. description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and usefnl improvements in tailors ironing-boards; and the invention consists in the peculiar arrangement of the board upon a stand, by means of which the positions of the board may be changed as the work to be performed may demand, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a bottom perspective view of the ironing-board. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the ironing board removed; and. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the stand, taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 2, with the board secured in place.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable base-board, upon which I rigidly secure the stand B, on the top of which, and at each end, are formed the flat bearingsurfaces a, between which is formed the depression 1), and upon these surfaces are cast the studs 6. A i
In the web of the stanzl B is formed, in casting, an opening to receive the hand-wheel G. A boss, D, is formed in the webabove this opening, through which the boltEpasses, its lower end being threaded to engage with the threaded hub of thehand-wheel,which flts snugly in the opening below the boss, so that there will be no vertical play thereto, but so that it can be easily turned. 7
The upper end of the bolt Eis provided with a flanged head, F.
G represents an ironing-board, to the under face of which I secure the plates H.
These plates have formed upon one edge the undercut flanges c, and upon the opposite edges the right-angle flanges d, terminating on the same plane as the outer faces of the flanges 0. These plates are secured with the edges of the flanges 0 parallel, and sufficiently far apart to admit of the insertion of the studs 0 and the bolt E,while-the flanged head of the latter is inserted between the undercut flanges and the face of the board.
In practice the board is secured in place by slipping it endwise upon the head of the stand in such a manner that the studs ewill pass between the edges of the flanges c and d, and the head of the bolt pass between the undercut faces of the flanges c and the bottom of the board. A turn now being given to the hand-wheel, the plates are drawn tightly down upon the head of the stand, thus securing the board in place. The studs e serve as stops to prevent the board from turning while in use,
and the flange d as feet to give a greater bearing upon the top of thehead of the stand. The plates H extending a greater portion of the length of the board, it will readily be seen .7 that such board can be easily adjnstedupon the stand so that either end of the board may be used, as the nature of the work to be done may require.
I design manufacturing various sizes of ironingboards to be sold with one stand.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In an ironing-board, the combination of the board G, provided with the flanged plates H, with the stand B, having studs 6, and the means, substantially as described, for locking the parts together at any point within the length of the plates H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an ironing-board, the combination of thestand B, having formed integral therewith the studs e,hand-whee1 0, working in a recess in said stand, bolt E, having flanged head, board G, and flanged plates H, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
JOHN M. SMYTH.
