Description
A. C. WEST.
Sewing-Machine Casters.
Patented July 27,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT AUGUSTINE C. WEST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC B.
ANDREWS AND DILLWYN P. JONES.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE CASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,965, dated July 27, 1875 application filed November '23, 1874.
` To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE C. WEsT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar-form caster attachment for sewingmachines, in which the casters are swiveled in bars having inclined slots, held by headed pins to other bars fastened by suitable clamps to the sewing-machine stand, the slotted bars being operated` by means of a shaft and cams, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains .to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of' this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section ofthe same.
A represents the bottom of a sewing-ma chine stand supported upon legs B B. 'lo opposite sides of the stand A are fastened bars C C, by means of suitable clamps D D. Each bar C is provided with two projecting-headed pins, c c, which pass through inclined slots b bin a bar, E. lIhe bars E E are held by the headed pins a close to the bars C C, and are capable of sliding diagonally up and down thereon. Each bar E is at or near its ends provided with suitable hubs, in which the casters Gr Gr are swiveled in the usual manner. One
end of each bar E is extended beyond the caster, and on the extended ends of the two bars, a shaft, H, has its bearings. On thisshaft are secured two cams, I I, to operate against the ends of the stationary bars C on that side. One end of the shaft H is provided with a lever, J, by means of which the shaft is turned. When the lever is turned outward the cams I are away from the bars C, and the machine sinks down so as to rest on the feet B. By turning the lever J inward and downward the cams I are applied to the ends of the bars C, so as to raise the machine up from the floor, or in other words, throwing it on the casters. The ends of the cams are made square, as shown at d, so that when applied there is no liability of their slipping.
By this means the machine can be easily thrown oi' and on the casters, as desired.
I am aware that caster attachments for sewing-machines operated by cams are not new, and I do therefore not claim such, broadly, as being my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe combination of the bars C C, fastened by means of clamps D D to a sewing-machine stand, and provided with headed pins a a, the movable bars E E, provided with inclined slots b b, and casters G G, the shaft H, cams I I, and lever J, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
AUGUSTINE C. WEST.
