-R.. P. BARTEL.
GLOVE. No. 325,899. Patented Sept. 8, 1885.
WITNESSES: INVBNTOR @m E z RMMWn E Ecwtfi Y BY ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH F. BARTEL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW J ERSEY.
GLOVE.
BPBCIFIGATIQII forming part of'Letters Patent No. 325,899, dated September 8, l885 Application filed Novcmber 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH F. BAR'IEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a mitten made of a single piece of material, and provided with a main seam which extends from the tip of the littlefinger end of the mitten over the tips of the remaining fingers and of thethumb, and with a return-seam whirh extends from the tip of the thumb to the hand-opening, the main seam and the return-seam running on separate lines from the tip of a gore, which serves to strengthen the connection of the thumb with the body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of the pattern. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the mitten when complete, the thumb being turned down so as to show the main seam and the return-seam.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the body of my mitten, which is cut in one piece with the thumb-piece B, and which is provided at the edge 5, opposite to the thumbpiece, with a gore, a. This pattern is folded in the lines a d of and h t, and then the main seam 0' e is made, which extends from the tip 0 of the little-finger end to the tip 6 of the thumb-piece, and a return-seam, e g, is made,
which extends from the tip of the thumb to the hand-opening, the return-seam running onthe same line with the main seam from the tip e of the thumb-piece to the tip of the gore a, as shown in Fig. 2. By these means the manufacture of mittens is materially facilitated, and mittens are produced which fit the wrist and the hand nicely, and which are not liable to tear at thejunction of the thumb-piece with the body of the mitten.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a mitten composed of asingle blank having the gore a on the side opposite to the thumb portion,
said blank being folded on the lines cdef and h i to bring the gore a into the thumb portion of the mitten, and the abutting edges of the blank being united by means of a main seam, c 6, extending from the tip cof the little-finger end of the mitten over the rest of the fingers to the tip 6 of the thumb, and a return-seam, 69, extending from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the gore a, and thencein a separate lineto the hand-opening of the mitten, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
