.DRENGHING BIT.
No. 323,133. Patented Jul 23, 1335.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. MARVIN, on row APACHE, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
DRENCHlNG-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,183, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed April 2, 1885. (Model) To aZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MARVIN, of Fort Apache, in the county of Apache and Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and Improved Drenching-Bit, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of my improved drenching-bit. Fig. 2 isa vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line a: x in Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 4 shows the bit in position to discharge its contents into the horses mouth.
The object. of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for administering medicine to horses.
My invention consists in the combination, with a bit of suitable form,of a reservoir provided at one end with adischarge-spout adapt ed to enter the horses mouth along with the bit, and having at the other end a valve, which retains the medicine until the reservoir is inverted, when it admits air, allowing the medicine to flow out of the spout at the opposite end of the reservoir.
My invention also consists in a novel form of bit especially adapted to carry and manipulate the reservoir.
The bit is formed of two similar side pieces, A A, having at their upper ends loops a, for receiving the ordinary bridle-straps, and connected at their lower ends bya cross-piece,B, having formed thereon a handle, I).
To the side pieces, A A, near the middle, is secured the transverse bar O,connecting the 0 said side pieces, and to the side piece, A, is secured a cylindrical reservoir, D, closed at the top and open at the bottom, but reduced in diameter at the lower end, and provided with a valve-seat, c, for receiving the ball- 5 valve d, contained by the reservoir, and capable of closing the open end thereof.
From the side of the reservoir D, near the upper end,a curved spout, 6, projects through a hole in the side piece, A, just above the bar C. When the bit is in position for use in the horses mouth, the bar 0 occupies the same position as the ordinary bit-bar, and the spout e enters the horses mouth and opens toward his throat. The reservoir D is filled through 5 5 the curved spout, and the bit is placed in the mouth like a common bit. The horses head is then raised by grasping the handle I) and pushing up on the bit. The reservoirD is in this manner turned until its contents flow out of the spout 6 into the horses mouth, while air is admitted to the reservoir D through its open 7 end, the valve d having fallen away from its seat in the operation of turning the bit.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A drenching-bit for administering medicine to animals, consisting of the reservoir D, secured to the side bars of the bit in an inverted 7o positiomhaving a spout at one end anda valve at the opposite end, as described.
JAMES F. MARVIN.
