(Cl. 211118) This invention has to do with improvements in multiple garment hangers, that is, a type of hanger which is capable of having a number of conventional garment or coat hangers suspended therefrom and which in turn is suspended from a clothes rod or the like by only a single hook,

Among the objects of the improvements of our present invention are:

(a) The provision of a multiple hanger which is capable of being sold in knocked-down condition with its part attached to a display card, but which may be easily assembled for use in such a manner as to allow intentional disassembly, and to avoid accidental disassembly;

(b) The provision of a hanger of said character on which it is easy to mount a number of conventional garment hangers without their being accidentally detached; and

(c) The provision of a hanger of this character which is economical of construction.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following detailed description of a presently preferred embodiment of the invention, for which purpose we shall refer to the accompanying drawing wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing our multiple hanger suspended from a conventional clothes rod;

FIG. 2 is a rear elevational view;

FIG. 3 is a side elevation;

FIG. 4 is a side elevation similar to FIG. 3 but showing the position of the parts in course of being assembled;

FIG. 5 is an enlarged top plan view of the body of the device with the suspension member detached;

FIG. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view taken on line 66 of FIG. 4;

FIG. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 7-7 of FIG. 6; and

FIG. 8 is an elevational view showing the parts separated and mounted on a display card.

Referring now to the drawing, the body portion of our hanger is generally denoted by the numeral 5, said body preferably being fiat and of any desired configuration suitable for supporting multiple clothes hangers, which configuration is adaptable to use with the suspending member described herein. As seen in the drawing, the body portion is rectangular, having straight side edges 6 and 7, having longitudinally spaced pairs of juxtaposed elongated garment hanger hook-receiving openings 8, the openings of each pair converging towards their top or inner ends and diverging towards their bottom or outer ends, and having another elongated opening 9 midway between its side edges. The hook portion H of a conventional garment hanger H may be inserted in each of the said openings so that said hangers may be suspended from the body portion of our device, one of them being shown so suspended in FIG. 1.

For suspending the body 5 from the rod R, such clothes rods being conventionally mounted horizontally in clothes closets, we provide a suspending member 10 comprising a top portion in the form of a relatively large hook 10a and a bottom portion in the form of a relatively small hook 10b.

In and adjacent the top end of the body 5, and spaced midway between the side edges of the body, we provide a hole 12 for receiving the hook 10b. A boss 14 is provided on each side of the body and each boss extends from the hole 12 to the top end of the body so as to relatively Patented Oct. 19, 1965 "ice thicken and strengthen the portion of the body above the hole. The free end 100 of the hook 10b is spaced from the contiguous surface of the member 10 a distance less than the thickness of the relatively thickened end portion of the body provided by the bosses 14 but at least as great as the thickness of the remainder of the body. The pur pose of the said bosses is to render it impossible for any vertical lifting of the body, such as often occurs when a user is removing a conventional hanger H from the device, to cause the body accidentally to become separated from the hook 10b. The said bosses also give added strength to the top end portion of the body engaged by the hook 10b to enable the body to support a greater load 'without the load causing the hook to break through the top end portion of the body immediately above the hole 12, thus enabling the major or remaining portion of the body to be made of a relatively thin section.

By the described construction, it is possible to display and market the device in knocked-down form with the parts mounted in any suitable manner on a display card C, which card may have an eye 17 by which it may be suspended from a display rack or the like.

The purchaser may, after removing the parts 5 and 10 from the card C, mount the suspending element 10 on the body 5 by inserting any part of the top end portion of the body, except the relatively thickened or bossed portion, between the free end 10c and the contiguous surface of the element 10 until said free end is in register with the hole 12 and then insert said free end through the hole.

The additional opening 9, midway between the side edges of the bottom end portion of the body, is for the purpose of enabling a user to mount the hook H of a garment loaded conventional hanger H in said opening and thus tend to maintain the body in upright position.

Moreover, inasmuch as the body 5 consists of one rigid piece having straight side edges, the conventional hangers H suspended therefrom fulcrum against the side edges of the body so that the hook portion H is not loose in the opening 8 until and unless the hanger H is manually lifted.

We claim:

A multiple clothes hanger adapted to be suspended from a clothes pole for receiving a plurality of garmentsupporting hangers, comprising a flat, relatively thin, elongated body member having a hole through its top portion medially between its sides, said body presenting a plurality of hanger-receiving openings and presenting a pair of opposed boss portions of equal thickness projecting from its opposite surfaces and together defining a relatively thick portion thereof of limited extent above said hole; and a suspending member reversely bent to define an upper relatively large rod engaging hook portion and a lower relatively small hook portion engaged in said hole; the two said hooks, defined by the suspending member, being in the same plane, perpendicular to the fiat plane of the body member in the combined condition; the terminal portion of said relatively small hook portion being permanently spaced from the contiguous portion a distance less than the thickness of said relatively thickened portion but at least as great as the thickness of the relatively thin portion of said body.
