EDDIE ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,138,259 JEWELRY DISPLAY DEVICE Eddie Sitt, 439 Ave. S, Brooklyn, N.Y. Filed Sept. 3, 1963, Ser. No. 306,028 3 Claims. (Cl. 2l113) The present invention relates to a device for displaying ornamental articles thereon. More particularly, the present invention relates to a display device in the form of a hanger construction that is formed in a one-piece construction of a plastic material and that includes means for retaining articles of jewelry thereon in display posiion.
In the display of ornamental articlesisuch as necklaces and earrings, it is desirable to visually display such articles for handling without having to place the articles on a counter or the like and thereby consume valuable counter space. The present invention is designed to mount the ornamental articles, such as necklaces and earrings, on a display device in the form of a hanger, the hanger being adaptable for being suspended from a convenient support or rack. The display device embodied in the present invention is preferably formed of a plastic material in a one-piece construction and has a triangular configuration generally in the shape of a coat hanger at the peak of which a hook is joined for suspending the device from a support. Located at the outermost ends of each arm that defines the hanger construction are spaced pins that are adapted to receive a necklace therebetween so as to locate the necklace in suspended relation on the hanger. The strand on which the beads of the necklace are located, projects between the upstanding spaced pins, thus capturing the necklace between the pins in secured relation. Since the device may be suspended from a support, the necklaces secured to the upstanding pins on the arms of the hanger depend below the hanger for the display thereof.
It is furthermore desirable to display earrings on the display device of the present invention that are companion to the necklaces mounted on the outer ends thereof. For this purpose, the portions intermediate the arms and base of the hanger are formed with webs in which openings are provided. Each of the openings is adapted to accommodate a clip portion of an earring to be displayed, and the clip portion cooperates with the ornamental part of the earring to lock the earring on the corresponding web portion of the hanger. The earrings and the necklaces are thus mounted together on the display hanger device that is, in turn, suspended from a support.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a device for displaying ornamental articles of jewelry, wherein the device is adapted tobe suspended from a support. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a display device on which necklaces and companion earrings are secured for the display thereof.
Still another object is to provide a display device in the form of a hanger that is provided with means for securing ornamental articles such as necklaces and earrings thereto for the display thereof.
Still another object is to provide a display device having a triangular configuration in the form of a hanger, web portions formed between the arms and base of the hanger for accommodating ornamental articles, such as earrings for the display thereof.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds when considered in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings which illustrate the best mode presently contemplated by me for carrying out my invention:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of the display device 3,138,259 PatenteclJune 23, 1964 embodied in thepresent invention, showing the location of necklaces and earrings on the device for the display thereof.
FIG. 2 is a rear elevational view of the display device shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along lines 3-3 in FIG. 1 showing an earring in phantom attached to the display device;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken along lines 44 in FIG. 1 and showing a necklace in phantom secured to the display device;
FIG. 5 is a top plan' view of the display device illustrated in FIG. 1;
FIG. 6 is aside elevational view of the display device; and
FIG. 7 is a rear elevational view taken along the lines 77 in FIG. 3 and showing the attachment of a clip portion of an earring to a web portion interconnecting an arm and the base of the display device.
Referring now to the drawing, the display device ern bodied in the present invention is illustrated and is generally indicated at 10. As shown, the display device 10 is in the form of a hanger, and as such includes an elongated base 12 to the ends of which are joined inclined arms 14 and 16. The uppermost ends of the inclined arms 14 and 16 define the peak of the triangularly shaped hanger, a hook 18 being secured to the peak of the hanger through a neck 19 and extending thereabove.
Joined to the outermost ends of the. junction of the base 12 and the arms 14 and 16 respectively are upstanding pins 20 and 22. Pins 24 and 26 are spaced from the pins 20 and 22, respectively, in parallel relation therewith and cooperate with these pins to define means for hanging ornamental articles, such as necklaces, therefrom in display position, as will be described hereinafter. In terconnecting the inclined arm 14 and the base 12 and the inclined arm 16 and the base 12 are web portions 28 and 30, the web portions 28 and 30 being adapted to receive ornamental articles, such as earrings, thereon for the display thereof. Formed in the web portions 28, 30 are openings 32, 34, respectively, which are provided for receiving the clip portions of the earrings to be displayed. The web portions 28, 30 are further formed with curved ridges or flanges 36, 38, respectively, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The hanger type display device 10 may be mounted in suspended relation from a support indicated at 40 in FIG. 1, the support 40 being part of a rack construction or any other suitable member for supporting a plurality of the display devices 10 thereon. The display device 10 is particularly adaptable for displaying ornamental articles such as necklaces and earrings, the necklaces as shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, being generally indicated at 42 and 44 and being mounted for display on the display device. The necklaces 42 and 44 each include a plurality of beads 46 through which a strand 48 extends in the conventional manner. Referring now to FIG. 4, it will be seen that the necklace 44, which is mounted on the right end of the display device 10 as viewed in FIG. 1, is secured in position by locating adjacent beads 46 on opposite sides of the arm 16, the strand 48 extending between the upstanding pins 22 and 26. The necklace 44 is thus positively retained in position and depends below the display device 10 in a position of display. It is understood that the necklace 42 is secured to the display device 10 in the manner as described in connection with the necklace 44, the beads 46 projecting on opposite sides of the arm 14 and the strand 48 extending between the upstanding pins 20 and 24.
If it is desired, necklaces 42 and 44 may be suspended from the pins 20 or 22 respectively by mounting an end ring (not shown) of each necklace in encircling engagement on the appropriate upstanding pin. The end ring for each necklace as contemplated for use is of that type that is normally associated with a necklace and that is located at a free end thereof for securement to a clasp construction.
The display device is also adaptable for the display of earrings that are companion to the necklaces 42, 44 and that are normally provided with pivotal clip portions. As shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 7, an earring generally indicated at 50 is formed with a clip portion 52 and with an ornamental portion 54. The clip portion 52 is normally secured to the ornamental portion 54 in pivotal relation with respect thereto and includes a pad 53 that is adapted to engage the rear side of the wearers ear. In securing each earring 50 to the display device 10, the clip portion 52 of the earring is inserted within either opening 32 or 34 and is pivoted into contact with the appropriate web portion 28 or 30. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 7, the clip portion 52 of an earring 50 has been inserted within the opening 34 of the web portion and has been pivoted to a securing position so that the clip portion 52 cooperates with the ornamental portion 54 to lock the earring on the web portion 30.
In order to positively retain the earring 50 on the web portion on which it is mounted, each of the web portions 28 and 30 is formed with the curved ridges or flanges 36 and 38 respectively as described hereinabove. Referring again to FIG. 7, the pad 53 of the clip portion 52 is shown positioned between the curved ridge 36 and the inclined arm 14 that also defines a ridge with respect to the web portion 28. The pad 53 of the clip portion 52 is thus positively located and will be prevented from sidewise and endwise movement, wherein the earring 50 is prevented from slipping from the display position thereof. As shown in FIG. 7, the curved configuration of the flange 36 is provided for affording the pad 53 of the clip portion 52 with suflicient room for location on the web portion 28.
It is seen that the necklaces 42 and 44 and the earrings 50 are securely mounted on the display device 10 in display position and cannot be dislodged from the display position except by specifically removing them therefrom. The necklaces 42, 44 are also firmly secured in place on the display device since the strands 48 of the necklaces extend between the upstanding pins and must be physically lifted thereover in order to remove the necklaces from their display position. The earrings can also only be removed from the display position thereof by physically pivoting the clip portion 52 of each earring downwardly and then withdrawing the clip portions through the openings 32 and 34 of the web portions 28, 30.
It is further seen that the display device 10 is simply formed in a one-piece construction and may be constructed from high density polyethylene and colored in an ornamental shade to add to the display characteristics of the ornamental articles mounted thereon. The display device 10 may be conveniently secured in position on any form of a support and may be physically removed as a unit with the ornamental articles thereon if the ornamental articles are to be inspected more closely.
While there is shown and described herein certain specific structure embodying the invention, it will be manifest to those skilled in the art that various modifications and rearrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the underlying inventive concept and that the same is not limited to the particular forms herein shown and described except insofar as indicated by the scope of the appended claims.
