(Cl. 242-18) The present invention relates to spools and bobbins of a type on which yarn or the like is wound and more particularly to a means for securing what is commonly known as the tag end of a supply of yarn or the like to a spool or bobbin in a manner such that the tag end will be securely held in place and protected during a winding operation in order that it will not fly loose or become dirtied incident to rotary movement of the spool.
In the case of yarn wound on spools it frequently becomes necessary to have a continuous feed of yarn from the spools to, for example, beams, knitting machines, sewing machines, or the like. In order to provide such a continuous feed it is common to tie the tag end, i.e., the trailing end, of a supply of yarn wound on a first spool to the leading end of the yarn wound on a second spool, the tag end of the yarn on the second spool to the leading end of the yarn wound on a third spool, and so on, in order that, as the yarn supply on any one spool is exhausted, the yarn from the immediately succeeding spool will be caused to unwind without any interruption in the feeding operation.
Various means have been devised to secure the tag end to spools, for example, the tail retainer 41 of US. Patent No. 2,573,598 and the plate member 14 of US. Patent No. 2,048,995.
It will be observed that in these latter mentioned patented devices the tag end, notwithstanding that a number of turns of yarn are taken around the above mentione members 41 or 14, is nonetheless susceptible to working itself free during rotating movement of the spool whereby such end may become entangled in surrounding structure, may lose twist previously imparted to it, or may become dirtied from foreign matter such as oil spatters or the like.
It will further be observed that the tag and retaining means of the aforementioned devices are chiefly concerned wth ensuring that a tag end will always be available on each spool of yarn while no provision has been made to insure that such tag end will be enclosed in order to remain clean during a winding operation even though it remains secured in place. Those familiar with the art to which this invention pertains will appreciate, however, that if the tag end is allowed to accumulate grease or other foreign matter thereon it will be necessary to remove the dirtied portions prior to tagging such end to the leading end of yarn wound on a different spool in order to prevent the dirtied end from showing up as an imperfection in a finished piece of goods.
It is accordingly an object of this invention to provide a tag end securing means which will securely hold a tag end in place and prevent it from becoming untwisted, entangled, or dirtied during rotary movement of its associated spool.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a tag end securing device which is simple to assemble and inexpensive to manufacture and which has no fragile appurtenances which are subject to being easily damaged.
It is another object of this invention to provide a yarn securing device for use on a spool or the like on which yarn is wound which will insure that a free end of yarn will always be available for attaching to the leading end of a subsequent supply of yarn, said device securing said tag end in a manner such that the tag end may be presented to the leading end of a second supply of yarn in substantially the same condition as said tag end was when attached to its spool.
lower surface of base 21 "ice With the above objects in view this invention accordingly resides in the novel apparatus hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
Accordingly, referring to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters are employed to designate like parts in the several figures:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus with parts broken away and shown in section;
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view of my tag end retaining and protecting member taken along lines 2-2 of FIG. 1 with parts removed for clarity; and
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the apparatus of FIGURE 1 taken along lines 3-3 of FIG. 1 with the spool member positioned in the tag end retaining and protecting member.
Referring to FIGURE 1 a conventionally driven spindle mechanism 11 has a base 12 upon which is formed a boss 13, a key member 14 being in turn formed on the boss 13. Upstanling from the base 12 is a spindle shaft 15 whose longitudinal axis is coincident with the axes of base 12 and boss 13. Boss member 13, it will be observed, has bores 16 passing therethrough. A protective member 20 has a fiat base portion 21 which is connected by a riser 22 to a second flat portion 23, the latter having formed thereon and extending therearound a collar 24. A keyway 25 is formed in the base portion 21 as is a plurality of bores 26. The protective member 20 is so constructed as to be fitted over spindle shaft 15 in such a manner that the upper surface of boss 13 will abut the of said protective member, the key member 14 and bores 16 being in registry with keyway 25 and bores 26, respectively. The member 20 may be secured to boss 13 by means of rivets 10 passing through bores 16 and 26.
The spool member 30 is a modified version of a conventional spool as commonly used in the art to which this invention pertains. This spool 30 has a main body or barrel 31 having a head 32 and a base 33 at its opposite ends, the barrel 31 having an axial bore extending therethrough. Securely attached, as by means of a plurality of screws, to the underside of the base 33 is a disk member 35 having a slotted keyway 36 cut therethrough, said keyway 36 registering with the keyway 25 formed in the cup member 20. Although the disk member 35 has been described as being attached to the base 33 by means of a plurality of screws, those skilled in the art will realize that said disk 35 could be formed integral with the spool 30. It has been found advantageous however to form disk member 35 as a separate element which can be removably secured as above described to facilitate replacement thereof should the keyway 36 become distorted due to the wearing action of the bey member 14 there against. A notch 37 is cut in the lower head 33 OI spool 30.
Assembly and operation of the device is as follows The protective member 20 is fitted over spindle shal 15 and key 14 so as to abut boss 13 and is securel attached to the latter by means of the plurality of rivet described above. The tag end of a supply of yarn 3 to be wound on spool member 30 is passed a few turr around the spindle 15 and allowed to rest within tl: confines of member 20. The spool 30 is now positione in place with the key member 14 being received in ke ways 25 and 36 in the member 20 and plate 35, respe tively and the base 33 resting atop the upper surface I collar 24 of protective member 20. When so assemble the plate 35 and the base 21 of protective member 2 are in abutting relationship or nearly so and the t: end of yarn 38 is securely gripped therebetween.

In combination with a winding apparatus having a spindle and means for driving said spindle, a spool driven by said spindle, said spool having a main body and heads at opposite ends thereof and a notch cut in one aid heads, a disk attached to the face of said notched head remote from said main body, a yarn securing and protecting member attached to said spindle, said member having a first substantially flat base portion, a second portion parallel or nearly so with and stepped from said base portion, a riser connecting said base portion and said second portion, and a collar formed on said second portion extending around the perimeter thereof, said notched head abutting the upper surface of said collar, said disk located within the circumference of said riser and overlying said first substantially flat base portion to secure between said disk and said base portion an end of yarn extending from said spool main body through said notch and into interlying relationship between said disk and said base portion.
