(Cl. 24-205) It is common practice in the manufacture of many types of garments, particularly the ladies garments, and especially tight-fitting garments such as girdles, to provide the garment closure in the form of a combination of a slide fastener and a hook and eye fastener, the hook and eye fastener being used for initially connecting together the edges of the garments preliminary to the final closing of the garment by the slide fastener.

The hook and eye fastener includes two fabric strips upon one of which are secured hook elements which cooperate with eye elements secured on the other strip; and the slide fastener includes two tapes each of which has fastener elements on its edges that are connected to and disconnected from the elements on the other tape by a slider.

The hook fastener tape is sewed on one of the slide fastener tapes and the eye fastener tape is sewed on the other slide fastener tape, and it is desirable, if not necessary, that the hook and eye elements be so located as not to interfere with the operation of the slider. To effect this result, it has been customary to make the hook tape and eye tape wide enough so that the tapes can be sewed on the slide fastener tapes in such a position that the hook elements will be disposed at one side of the path of movement of the slider. In the known constructions, the slide fastener tapes and the hook and eye fastener tapes are wide and bulky, and consequently, the fastener makes unsightly projections beneath a thin outer garment such as a dress, and the fastener is also uncomfortable to the wearer and difiicult to open and close.

A primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved construction and combination of a hook and eye fastener and a slide fastener wherein all of the fastener tapes shall be relatively narrow, so as to be both comfortable to the wearer and cause a minimum of projection or protuberance beneath the outer garment.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a combination wherein the construction shall embody novel and improved features, permitting the use of narrow slide fastener tapes and allowing the hook and eye fasteners to be disposed directly beneath the slider of the slide fastener and yet ensure against interference by the hooks and eyes with the operation of the slider.

A particular object of the invention is to provide a novel construction and combination of the slide fastener tape and the hook tape and a method of making it wherein one edge portion of'the hook tape is sewed by a line of stitching to one edge portion of the slide fastener tape, and thereafter the hook tape can be folded along said line of stitching upon the slide fastener tape in position to cooperate with an eye fastener element on the eye tape.

Other objects, advantages and results of the invention will be brought out by the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of a hook tape constructed in accordance with the invention;

FIGURE 2 is a bottom plan View of the hook tape and a top plan view of the complemental eye tape, showing the hook elements connected to the eye elements;

FIGURE 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view approximately on the plane of the line 33 of FIGURE 1;

FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the combined slide fastener and hook and eye fastener applied to the edge portion of a garment with the hook and eye fastener closed and the slide fastener partially closed;

FIGURE 5 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view approximately on the plane of the line 5-5 of FIG- URE 4;

FIGURE 6 is a plan view of the two edge portions of the garment, the slide fastener, and hook tape, showing the manner of securing the hook tape to the slide fastener tape and the manner of securing the two tapes to the garment edge portion;

FIGURE 7 is a similar view showing the two fasteners secured to the two edge portions of the garment and also showing the hook elements connected to the eye elements;

FIGURE 8 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the plane of the line 8-8 of FIGURE 6; and

FIGURE 9 is a similar view on the plane of the line 9-9 of FIGURE 7.

Specifically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the slide fastener A is of a generally known type and construction but includes unusually narrow fabric tapes 1 and 2 along one edge of each of which is a row of fastener elements 3 that are connected and disconnected by a slider 4 in known manner.

The hook and eye fastener includes a hook tape B and an eye tape C, each formed as usual of a suitable textile fabric. The book tape is shown as comprising one piece of fabric folded to provide two

superposed plies

5 and 6 between which are secured the hook fastener elements D, each of which is formed of a single length of wire with rectangular base loops '7 disposed between the

plies

5 and 6 and with a hook shank and bill 8 projecting from between the plies and above one thereof, there being stitches 9 securing the plies together along their free edges and between the base loops 7 of the hook elements and said edges of the strip. The strip has a portion It) of substantial width between the folded edges and the sides of the base loops opposite the stitches 9, for a purpose to be hereinafter described.

The eye tape has a plurality of plies between two of which are secured the eye elements E by means of stitches 11, one edge portion of the strip extending beyond the eyelets as indicated at 12 to underlie the hook tape and close the gap between the edges of the two tapes when they are connected together as shown in FIGURE 2.

The eye tape is sewed onto one of the slide fastener tapes, in the present instance, the tape 1, in any suitable manner, but as shown, the edge portion of the slide fastener tape opposite the fasteners 3 is superposed on the edge portion of the eye tape opposite the edge 12 and the two tapes are secured together by lines of stitches 13 which may also be used at the same time for securing one edge portion G of the garment to the slide fastener tape and the eye tape as best shown in FIGURE 7.

The hook tape is secured to the other slide fastener tape 2 by placing the edge of the slide fastener tape 2 opposite the fasteners 3 in overlying relation to the edge portion 19 of the hook tape opposite the edge from which the hook bills project, as shown in FIGURE 6, whereupon the hook tape B is stitched to the slide fastener tape 2 by a longitudinal line of stitches 14 which may also be used, preferably with another line of stitches 15, for securing the other edge portion H of the garment to the hook tape and the slide fastener tape. The line of stitches 14 is disposed between the base loops of the hook fastener elements and the edge of the hook tape, and the hook tape is of such width and secured to the slide fastener tape in such relation to the edge of the latter that the hook tape can be folded along the line of stitches 14 to bring the hook elements into superposed relation to the slide fastener tape as shown by broken lines in FIGURE 8 and by solid lines in FIGURE 9.

Thereupon the eye elements can be engaged with the hook elements as shown in FIGURES 7 and 9 preliminary to the connection of the fastener elements 3 of the 3 slide fastener by the slider 45-, and the slider will move freely along the fasteners 3. During this movement, one edge portion of the slider moves between the slide fastener tape and the hook tape as shown in FIGURE 5 which prevents any interference of the hooks with movement of the slider, even though the hooks and eyes are disposed directly beneath the slider. When the slider is moved in one direction, the two edge portions of the garment are pulled together and firmly connected by the slide fasteners as shown at the lower portion of FIG- URE 4 and in FIGURE 5, while upon movement of the slider in the other direction, the garment edge portions are released.

It will thus be seen that the invention provides a combined slide fastener and hook and eye fastener wherein the construction of the hook tape and the manner of attaching it to the slide fastener tape are such that an exceptionally narrow slide fastener tape may be utilized. Furthermore, the invention provides "a hook tape connected along one edge portion between the hook element base loops and one edge of the tape to theslide fastener tape so that theother portion of the hook fastener tape is free for folding along said. line of stitches to facilitate both the attachment of the hook tape to the slide fastener tape and also the connection of the hook elements to the eye elements. The construction is of minimum bulkiness, flexible, light in'weigh t, and exceptionally narrow so that it may. be applied to garments formed of relatively thin materialwith a minimum'of detraction from the appearance of the garment, especially as com pared with the known types of combined hook and eye fasteners andslide fasteners applied to garments of thin material. i i

Instead of sewing the hook elements into a fabric tape and then sewing the. fabric tape on the slide fastener tape as above described, it is possible to secure the hooks directly to the slide fastener. tape adjacent the edge thereof opposite thaton which the slide fastener elements are secured, withfthe bills of the hook elements extending outwardly from the tape so that the. tape can be folded longitudinally along the bases of the hook elements to position the hook elements with their bills extending inwardly of thetape.

Other modifications and changes in. the details ofconstruction of the fastener can be made within the spirit of the invention and thescope of the appended one edge portion secured to the edge portion of one slide fastener tape that is opposite the edge portion hearing the fastener elements and with said eye elements disposed. approximately beneath the fastener elements on the slide fastener tapes when they are connected together, and a flexible hook tapehaving hook element's formed with bases secured to said hook tape in spaced relation longitudinally thereof and with bills projecting from said bases beyond. one edge of the tape and each to coact with one of said eye elements, said hook tape having its other edge portion secured to the edge portion of one side of the. other slide fastener tape that is opposite the edge bearing the corresponding slide fastener elements, said hook tape being secured. to the corresponding slide fastener tape by a line of stitches extending longitudinally of and penetrating the tapes between the bases of the hookele'ments and the edge of the hook tape Opposite the edge from which project the hook bills, with the second-mentioned edge of the hook tape otherwise free of said slide fastener tape, the hook bills being disposed at the side of the hook tape that abuts the slide fastener tape, saidhook tape being foldable along said line of stitches to position'the first-mentioned edge of the hook tape and the hook elements in opposed relation to the slide fastener tape and with the bills of the hook elements extending in the direction away from the slide fastener tape.

2. A combination fastener as defined in claim 1 with the. addition of the closure edge portion of an article secured to the slide fastener tape and the hook tape by said line of stitching. i

The combination of a slide fastener tape and a hook tape wherein the slide fastener tape has a plurality of fastener elements secured to one edge thereof for coaction with fastener elements on the edge of another slide fastener tape, and the hook tape has a plurality of hook elements formed with bases secured to the tape in spaced relationlongitudinally thereof and with bills disposed at one side and along one edge of the hook tape, said hook tape is secured to one side of the slide fastener tape in superposed abutting relation thereto by a line of stitches extending longitudinally ofand penetrating the tapes between the bases of said hook elements andthe other edge of the hook: tape which isotherwise free of the slide fastener tape, the hook bills are disposed at the side of the hook tape that abuts the slide fastener tape, and said hooktape is foldable along said'line of. stitches to position the first-mentioned edge of the hook tape and the. hook elements in opposed relation to the slide fastener tape and with the bills of the hook elements extending 'in the direction away from the slide fastener tape. Claims

1. A COMBINATION FASTENER INCLUDING A SLIDE FASTENSER COMPRISING TWO SLIDE FASTENER TAPES EACH HAVING FASTENER ELEMENTS SECURED TO ONE EDGE THREOF AND CONNECTIBLE WITH AND DISCONNECTIBLE FROM THE FASTENER ELEMENTS ON THE OTHER SLIDE FASTENER TAPE BY A SLIDER, AND A HOOK AND EYE FASTENER COMPRISING A FLEXIBLE EYE TAPE HAVING A PLURALITY OF EYE ELEMENTS SECURED THERETO IN SAPCED RELATION LONGITUDINALLY THEREOF SECURED TO THE EDGE PORTION OF ONE ONE EDGE PORTION SECURED TO THE EDGE PORTION OF ONE SLIDE FASTENER TAPE THAT IS OPPOSITE THE EDGE PORTION BEARING THE FASTENER ELEMENTS AND WITH SAID EYE ELEMENTS DISPOSED APPROXIMATELY BENEATH THE FASTENER ELEMENTS ON THE SLIDE FASTENER TAPES WHEN THEY ARE CONNECTED TOGETHER, AND A FLEXIBLE HOOK TAPE HAVING HOOK ELEMENTS FORMED WITH BASES SECURED TO SAID HOOK TAPE IN SPACED RELATION LONGITUDINALLY THEREOF AND WITH BILLS PROJECTING FROM SAID BASES BEYOND ONE EDGE OF THE TAPE AND EACH TO COACT WITH ONE OF SAID EYE ELEMENTS, SAID HOOK TAPE HAVING ITS OTHER EDGE PORTION SECURED TO THE EDGE PORTION OF ONE SIDE OF THE OTHER SLIDE FASTENER TAPE THAT IS OPPOSITE THE EDGE BEARING THECORRESPONDING SLIDE FASTENER ELEMENTS, SAID HOOK TAPE BEING SECURED TO THE CORRESPONDING SLIDE FASTENER TAPE BY A LINE OF STITCHES EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY OF AND PENETRATING THE TAPES BETWEEN THE BASES OF THE HOOK ELEMENTS AND THE EDGE OF THE HOOK TAPE OPPOSITE THE EDGE FROM WHICH PROJECT THE HOOK BILLS, WITH THE SECOND-MENTIONED EDGE OF THE HOOK TAPE OTHERWISE FREE OF SAID SLIDE FASTENER TAPE, THE HOOK BILLS BEING DISPOSED AT THE SIDE OF THE HOOK TAPE THAT ABUTS THE SLIDE FASTENER TAPE, SAID HOOK TAPE BEING FOLDABLE ALONG SAID LINE OF STITCHES TO POSITION THE FIRST-MENTIONED EDGE OF THE HOOK TAPE AND THE HOOK ELEMENTS IN OPPOSED RELATION TO THE SLIDE FASTENER TAPE AND WITH THE BILLS OF THE HOOK ELEMENTS EXTENDING IN THE DIRECTION AWAY FROM THE SLIDE FASTENER TAPE.
