Filed May 1, 1963, Ser. No. 277,137 3 Claims. (Cl. 240-81) This invention relates generally to lamp shades and more particularly to a combined lamp shade frame and lamp bulb socket mounting.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a frame that supports a lamp shade in suspended condition.

Another object of the invention is to provide a lamp shade frame that is vertically disposed so as to support a lamp shade in suspended condition.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined mounting for a lamp shade frame and a lamp bulb socket.

Yet another object is to provide a combined mounting for a lamp shade and a lamp bulb socket that is readily mounted on a vertically disposed post.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a coupling unit for mounting a lamp shade frame and lamp bulb socket on a vertically disposed post.

It is also an object according to a modification of the invention, to provide a lamp shade frame that is horizontally disposed so as to support a lamp shade in upright condition.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings,

and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a table lamp embodying the invention is shown and designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The lamp 10 comprises a flat circular metal base 12 with a central hole 13 and supporting an upright tubular metal post 14 at the center thereof for guiding a conducting cable 16 upwardly through the hole 13. Post 14 supports a lamp "ice bulb assembly 18 and a lamp shade assembly 26 in upright condition.

The lamp bulb assembly 18 comprises a socket structure 22 of ordinary construction, supporting a lamp bulb 24 and provided with a switch (not shown) having an elongated actuating stem 26 with finger piece or knob 28.

The lamp shade assembly 20 comprises a metal wire frame 30 including a ring 32 and a number of spaced rods 34 depending from the ring and formed on their bottom ends with inwardly extending angular feet 35. The rods are formed of round wire stock. A conical-shaped lamp shade 36 is seated at its narrow end on the ring 32 and is suspended in supported condition from the ring 32.

In accordance with the invention, the lamp bulb assembly 18 and the lamp shade assembly 20 are jointly supported at and mounted on the top of the vertical post 14. This mounting consists of a metal disc 40 having a central opening 42. Adjacent its periphery, the disc is formed with upstruck lugs 44, each lug having an upwardly slanting portion 46 that terminates in a portion 48 disposed at an angle to the slanting portion and parallel to the plane of the body of the disc. The terminal portions 48 point inwardly toward the center of the body of the disc. The disc is supported on the post 14 by means of a lock nut 48 threaded onto the bottom end of a threaded portion 50 at the top end of the post.

The lamp shade frame assembly 20 is supported by means of a split metal fiat ring 52 seated on the periphery of the disc 40. The ring is formed with a series of pairs of upstruck curved lugs 54, the individual lugs of each pair opening toward each other and spaced closely from each other. The body of the ring is also formed with bayonet slots 56 disposed between the pairs of lugs 54.

In assembling the lamp, the socket 22 of the lamp bulb assembly 18 with cable 16 connected thereto is slipped through the center opening in the split ring 52 of the lamp shade assembly 20, the stem 26 of the lamp switch passing through the split 64 in the ring. The lamp bulb 24 is then screwed onto the socket. The disc 40 is then joined to the ring 52 by inserting the terminals 48 of the lugs 44 upwardly through the enlarged opening 58 of the bayonet slots 56 and rotating the disc partially so as to carry the terminals over the narrow portions 6% of the slots whereby said terminals interlock with the material of the ring. The lamp shade frame 30 is then mounted on the ring 52 by forcing the angular feet 35 thereof laterally and inwardly through the pairs of lugs 54 on the ring 52 as best seen in FIG. 1. The socket 22 is then threaded onto the top threaded end 50 of the post 14. Next, the lamp bulb 24 is threaded into the socket. Shade 36 is finally inserted over the frame 30 and seated on the ring 32.

In FIG. 10, a modified form of lamp bulb assembly 18' is shown as well as a modified form of lamp shade assembly 20'. The lamp bulb assembly 18 differs from the lamp bulb assembly 18 merely in that the switch actuating device comprises opposed slidable elongated buttons 26', 26 protruding from opposite sides of the socket 22 instead of the stem 26 and knob 23.

The modified lamp shade assemmly 20 comprises a horizontally disposed ring 32' having spaced radial arms 34 formed of round wire stock, extending inwardly toward the center of the ring. The arms 34' are supported on the post 14' by the disc 40' and ring 52 assembly. Ring 52 differs from ring 52 in that the body thereof is continuous and not split. The disc 40' is similar to disc 40. Disc 40', however, seats on a annular flange 66 formed on the post 14' near its top threaded end 50'.

In this form of lamp shade assembly 20, the large end of the lamp shade 36' is seated directly on the periphery of the ring 32, the body of which is slanted slightly from the vertical.

In all other respects, the lamp bulb assembly 18 and 3 the lamp shade assembly 2% are similar to assembly 18 and assembly 20, respectively, and similar references are used to indicate similar parts.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a table lamp, a disc and ring assembly for supporting a lamp shade assembly, said disc and ring assembly including a disc having a central opening for receiving an upright supporting post, spaced lugs upstruck from the surface of the body of the disc, and a ring removably superimposed on the body of the disc at the peripheral edge thereof, said ring having spaced bayonet slots in annular formation to receive the lugs on the disc, and pairs of lugs upstruck from the body of the ring, within the confines of the ring, for receiving portions of a lamp shade frame, said ring and disc being movable relatively for interlocking the ring and disc to each other.

2. In a table lamp, a disc-shaped base, an upright post supported at the center of the base, a lamp bulb assembly detachably secured to the top of the post, said assembly including a socket detachably secured to the top of the post and a bulb supported in the socket, a lamp shade assembly mounted on the top of the post, said lamp shade assembly including a frame comprising a ring, rods depending from the ring and a shade around the frame and A '3' supported on the ring, said mounting including a disc supported on the top of the post, a second ring superimposed on the disc and slidably connected thereto, pairs of spaced lugs protruding from the top of the latter ring cable, a lamp shade assembly mounted on the top of the post, said shade assembly including a ring, arms extending radially from the inner periphery of the ring, a disc supported on the post at the top thereof, a second ring detachably superimposed on the disc, pairs of lugs protruding from the top of the latter ring, within the confines of the ring receiving the inner ends of the radial arms on the ring, and a lamp shade on the outer periphery of said latter ring.

Claims

3. A TABLE LAMP COMPRISING A DISC-SHAPED BASE WITH A CENTRAL HOLE THEREIN, AN UPRIGHT TUBULAR POST SUPPORTED ON THE BASE OVER SAID HOLE, A CONDUCTING CABLE PASSING UPWARDLY THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE BASE AND THROUGH THE POST, A LAMP BULB ASSEMBLY DETACHABLY SECURED TO THE TOP OF THE POST, SAID ASSEMBLY INCLUDING A LAMP BULB, MEANS OF CONNECTION BETWEEN THE BULB AND CONDUCTING CABLE, A LAMP SHADE ASSEMBLY MOUNTED ON THE TOP OF THE POST, SAID SHADE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING A RING, ARMS EXTENDING RADIALLY FROM THE INNER PERIPHERY OF THE RING, A DISC SUPPORTED ON THE POST AT THE TOP THEREOF, A SECOND RING DETACHABLY SUPERIMPOSED ON THE DISC, PAIRS OF LUGS PROTRUDING FROM THE TOP OF THE LATTER RING, WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE RING RECEIVING THE INNER ENDS OF THE RADIAL ARMS ON THE RING, AND A LAMP SHADE ON THE OUTER PERIPHERY OF SAID LATTER RING.
