Description

(ModeL) J. W. OALLAWAY DOOR OHEOK. No. 315,718. I Patented Apr. 14, 1885.
INVENTOR V WITNESSES:

UNITED STATES PATENT Trice.
J AME-S WILLIAM GALLAWAY, OF TEMPLE, TEXAS.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 315,718, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed October 11, 1884. (Model) T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES WVILLIAM GALLA- WAY, of Temple, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented a new and Inn proved DoorHolder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding doors open which is simple in construction and effective in use.
The invention consists in a disk pivoted on a plate and provided with a notch for receiving the corner of the door, and with a series of teeth with which a pawl engages for locking the disk in place after it has been adjusted,
Reference is to he had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan View of my improved door-holder, showing it in the position it has when not holding the door. Fig. 2 is a like View showing it holding the door. Fig. 8 is an edge View of the device, showing how it holds the door.
A disk, A, is pivoted horizontally on aplate, B, adapted to be secured on the floor, a ring, 0, being interposed between the plate and disk to reduce friction. The disk A is provided on its upper surface with an upwardly-pro jecting handle-lug, D, and with a series of ratchet-teeth, E, on its edge. A rectangular notch, F, is formed in the edge of the disk, and from the edges of the same flanges G project upward. A pawl, H, pivoted on the plate B,
is adapted to engage with the teeth of the disk, and is provided with a handle-lug, J, to facilitate swinging it toward or from the disk A. The plate B is secured on the floor at the wall in case the door K is to be held entirely open; or, if the door is to be held open at an inclination to the wall only, the plate B is fastened on the floor a greater or less distance from the wall. The disk A is turned so that the notch F faces the direction from which the door K swings, and after the door has passed the disk the said disk is swung toward the door, the flanges G resting against the face and edge of the door, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The disk A is then looked in place by means of the pawl and holds the door open. When the door is to be closed, the pawl H is swung back and the disk A turned to swing the flanges G from the door, thus permitting the door to clear the said disk.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the plate B, of the pivoted disk A, having a notch, F, and teeth E. and the pawl H, pivoted on the plate B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the plate B, ofthe pivoted disk A, having a notch, F, and of means for locking the disk in place, substantially as herein shown and described.
JAMES WILLIAM CALLAWAY.
