Description

G. W. MUDGETT. SHUTTER-FASTENERS.
No. 195,525. Patented Sept.25,1877.
ATTORNEYS.
N-FEFERS, FNOTO UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
GEORGE W. MUDGETT, OF EDGARTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,525, dated September 25, 1877; application filed June 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MUDGETT, of Edgartown, in the county of Dukes and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Self-Adjusting Button for Shutters, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section on line a; w in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a window sill and shutter, showing the application of my improved fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to fasteners for shutters, doors, 860.; and it consists of a button upon the opposite sides of which nibs or catches are formed, which engage automatically with a pin in the window-stool when the shutter is closed, or with an L-shaped hook projecting from the wall when the shutter is open, there being also a sector-shaped portion, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawing, A is a button, upon which the nibs a a are formed, and which is secured to the under surface of the lower rail of the shutter by a screw, b, which passes through an ear formed on the center of the button on the side opposite the nibs a a. A pin, d, projects from the face of the button near the screw b.
B is a plate, which is secured to the lower rail of the shutter by a screw, 0, upon which it swings. The opposite end of the plate is slotted to receive the screw b. It is also slotted to receive the pin d, and is provided with a sector-shaped portion, f, which is engaged by the fastening pin or hook when the shutter is either open or closed.
Washers g are placed between the button A and plate B and the lower rail of the shutter, and a pin, h, is driven into the window-stool in position to strike the plate B and be engaged by the nib a, and an L-shaped hook is driven into the wall of the building, and is engaged by the nib a when the shutter is opened.
The operation is as follows: As the shutter is closed the plate B strikes the pin h, and is moved so as to throw the nib a. over the said pin. When the shutter is opened the nib a is made to engage with a hook that projects from the side of the building in a similar way. The plate B not only moves the button A, but it also limits its motion as it strikes the sides of the screw b.
The pin h and the screw b, upon which the button A swings, are arranged in relation to each other so that a line drawn through their centers when the shutter is closed will form an angle of forty-five degrees with the line of the shutter-rail. By means of this arrangement the nib a, when thrown over the pin h, clamps the pin in such a manner between it and the plate B that the shutter cannot be moved without releasing the fastening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The button A, having the sector-shaped portion f, the nibs or catches a a on opposite ends, projecting from the same side, provided with the pin h, and pivoted as described, in combination with the plate B, having the slot for receiving the screw b and pin d, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
GEORGE W. MUDGETT.
