SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,365, dated April '7, 1885. Application filed anuary 16, 1885. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY E. VVILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWindow- Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the construction and relative arrangement of the window-frame, the sash-retaining stops, and the blind-retaining way-strips; and it pertains more especially to the manner of forming the j oint between the contiguous edges of the way-strips and the window-stop, and

' the manner of attaching the way strips to narrow windowframes, which otherwise do not afford the required space for inside sliding blinds.

My improvements are explained by reference to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 represents a horizontal section of one side of a window-frame provided with a blind-way strip, the front edge of which projects in front of the frame, and its rear edge is set into a rabbet or retaining-recess in the front edge of the window-stop. Fig. 2 is a modification of Fig. 1, showing the inner surface of the window-stop flush with the front surface of the way-strip. Fig. 3 is also a modified form of Fig. 1, showing a forward-projecting way-strip set back from the windowstop.

A represents the window-stop, which bears against the front surface of the lower windowsash, B, in the ordinary manner. The front edge of the stop is provided with a rabbet or recess, 0, for the reception of the rear edge of the way-strip D, whereby the joint formed between the contiguous edges of the stop A and way-strip D is entirely covered by the bead E. Owing to the light and delicate construction of the stop A and way-strip D it E serves the further purpose of retaining the,

rear edge of the way-strip D in place. By

forming a similar rabbet in the rear edge of I the way-strip, as shown in Fig. 2, I am ena bled to use a stop of less thickness than that shown in Fig. 1. The object attained, however, is the same in both forms of stop and way-strip. In all ordinary houses the win dow-frames of which have two-by-four studding a limited space is afforded in the frame for sliding blinds.

To adapt sliding blinds to windows of such limited width, I extend the front edge of the way-strip D past the front edge of the inside casing, F, far enough to give the required space for'the blinds, as shown in the three several figures, and I strengthen or stay the front edge of said way-strip upon its outside.

with a strip or molding, G, which gives a neat ornamental finish to the frame while it prevents the liability of the way-strip being split or broken by outward pressure.

The several figures shown represent but one side of a window-frame, the opposite side of which is a duplicate of the parts reversely arranged. V

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. The combination, in a window-frame having fixed sash-retaining ways formed therein, of a'separate and independent removable blind-retaining way-strip, D, located inside of the lower sash, sash-retaining stop A, interposed between said removable blind way-strip, and the inner sash-stop provided at its front edge with a rabbet or recess, 0, for the reception of the rear edge of said blind way-strip D, and a bead or molding, E, adapted to overlap and retain in place the rear edge of the blind way-strip while it covers the joint between the contiguous edges of said stop and blind way-strip, substantially as setforth.

2. The combination, with the respective sides of a window-frame, of the forward-projecting way-strip D, the front edge of which extends IOO 10 edge of said way-strip, bead E, covering the joint between the contiguous edges of said stop, and way-strip and stay-strip or molding G, having bearings against the front surface of the casing F and outside surface of the pr0- jecting edge of said way-strip, as set forth.
