2 claims. (er 22a-ss) This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers and more particularly to an i-mproved wire hanger andto a cover attachment for the wire hanger.
One object of the invention is to provide a cardboard cover or jacket for a wire hanger for hanging fur trimmings, belts, collars, scarfs, etc. and to keep garments such as coats, trousers, dresses, or other apparel out of contact with the wire, thereby preventing creases in the y garments.
Another object is to provide an inexpensive cover for a wire hanger which cover can be formed from a single blank of cardboard which may be folded around the wire hanger to enclose the same with the Wire hook of the hanger projecting from the hanger, the cardboard blank having interlocking iaps and slits to hold the cover on the hanger.
A further object is to provide a cardboard cover for a wire hanger which denes a pluralityof slots or stalls with a crossbar of the hanger for supporting belts, ties, stockings, etc., in spaced disposition along the crossbar.
F or further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to theappended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a covered hanger embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 and FIG. 3 are sectional views taken on lines 2-2 and 3-3, respectively, of FIG. l.
FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of the wire hanger per se.
FIG. 5 is an oblique plan view of the cardboard blank in at unfolded condition.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in FIGS. 1-4 a wire hanger 1@ formed from a single piece of stiff metal wire. The hanger has a generally trapezoidal frame with straight parallel lateral side bars 12a, 121D joined by an integral straight bottom crossbar 14 extending perpendicularly to the side bars. The hanger has upper arms 15a, 15ID extending at obtuse angles to each other and to upper ends of side bars 12a, 12b, respectively. The arms 15a, 15b are twisted together at their inner ends at the apex of the frame to forma helical joint 16 and hook 18 extends upwardly of the joint in the plane of the hanger.
The hanger cover 20 is shown as a fiat blank in FIG. 5. This blank is generally rectangular in form with straight opposite lateral edges 22a, 22h. A plurality of rectangular slots 24 are formed in the body of the blank. The slots are spaced apart by narrow connecting strips 25 extending parallel to the'side edges. At the upper edge of the blank is an inwardly or downwardly curved section 26 centrally located between opposite edges of the blank. Two di- Verging inclined substantially rectangular flaps 28a, 28h are defined by scored lines 30a, 30h extending parallel to upper inclined edges 32a, 32h. Two slits 33a, 33h are located below each of the flaps. At its bottom edge, the blank has an upwardly or inwardly curved central section 36 opposing curved section 26. The ilaps 38a and 38b have inner opposing notches 43 and outer notches 44 defining tongues or` tabs` 45, 46 extending in opposite directions. Theblank can be folded along the scored lines 30E, 30", 40, 40h` and along a central transverse line A--A as indicated in FIG. 5.
FIGS. 1-3 show the cover 20 in folded condition around the hanger 10. Curved edge section 26 registers with edge section 36. Flaps 28a, 213b are folded rearwardly as viewed in FIG. l over the hanger arms 15a, 15b, respectively. Flaps 38a, 38b are folded forwardly on lines 4de, 40b over the body `of the blank and the tongues 45, 46 are engaged in slots 33a, 33h, respectively. Each of the strips Z5 is folded in half and defines a flap loop around the crossbar 14. The half sections 25a, 25b i of the strips oppose each other and dene separating partitions for stalls in which ties, fur trimmings, belts, collars, scarfs, etc. and other long narrow articles of apparel can be supported on the horizontal portions 14' of the crossbar 14 extending between the loops of the folded strips.
The cover can be readily removed from the hanger by disengaging the tongues or tabs 4S, 46 from the slits 33a, 33h. If permanent attachment of the cover is desired, staples 48 can be applied to each end of the hanger assembly to secure the aps 38, 38b to adjacent side portion 2i) and opposite side portion 26' of the blank. Hook 18 and joint 16 extend upwardly of registering edge Vsections 26, 36 at the vertical, central line of symmetry of the hanger body and cover.
The hanger assembly of wire hanger and cover can be quickly assembled together and stapled if desired by relatively unskilled workers. The several parts are manufactured at low cost by well known wire forming and cardboard cutting apparatus.
Instead of metal wire, the hanger can be made of plastic wire and the cover can be made of plastic sheet material instead of cardboard. If desired, suitable advertising indicia 50 can be applied to the blank. The indicia will be exposed at outer sides of the opposing side portions 20a, 2Gb of the cover.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. A hanger assembly, comprising, in combination, a wire garment hanger having a generally trapezoidal frame formed by two straight parallel side bars, a straight crossbar extending between and perpendicular to the side bars, and a pair of arms extending at obtuse angles to the side bars, said arms being twisted together at the apex of the frame forming a helical joint, and a hook extending upwardly of the joint in the plane of the frame; and a cardboard cover including a pair of flat generally trapezoidal wall Vportions opposing each other and enclosing said frame therebetween, said wall portions having matching recesses forming an opening said joint and hook extending outwardly of the cover through said opening, one of said wall portions having flaps folded over the respective arms of the hanger, the other of said wall portions having other tlaps folded over the arms of the hanger and juxtaposing said one wall portion, and means securing said other flaps at said one wall portion, said cover having a central portion formed with a series of elongated closed slots spaced by narrow strips, said cover being folded at the centers of the strips so that the strips dene loops engaging around said crossbar, said slots and crossbar defining a multiplicity of stalls for supporting a variety of elongated articles of apparel on sections of the crossbar between the strips. v
2. A blank for forming a hanger cover, said blank comprising a pliable sheet having a generally rectangular shape with straight parallel ends, corner portions of said sheet extending outwardly of opposite long side edges of the sheet and defining laps for folding over arms of the hanger, said sheet having a plurality of generally rectangular elongated closed slots across the sheet, said slots being Separated by narrow, parallel integral strips adapted to form loops around a crossbar of a hanger when the sheet is folded around a hanger, the opposing long side edges of the sheet having inwardly curved central recesses which 4 register with each other when the sheet is folded to define an opening for extension of a hanger hook and arm joint therethrough, said ysheet having pairs of slits adjacent one ylong side edge onopposite sides of the recess therein `for receiving and interlocking said flaps.

Claims (1)

1. A HANGER ASSEMBLY, COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, A WIRE GARMENT HANGER HAVING A GENERALLY TRAPEZOIDAL FRAME FORMED BY TWO STRAIGHT PARALLEL SIDE BARS, A STRAIGHT CROSSBAR EXTENDING BETWEEN AND PERPENDICULAR TO THE SIDE BARS, AND A PAIR OF ARMS EXTENDING AT OBTUSE ANGLES TO THE SIDE BARS, SAID ARMS BEING TWISTED TOGETHER AT THE APEX OF THE FRAME FORMING A HELICAL JOINT, AND A HOOK EXTENDING UPWARDLY OF THE JOINT IN THE PLANE OF THE FRAME; AND A CARDBOARD COVER INCLUDING A PAIR OF FLAT GENERALLY TRAPEZOIDAL WALL PORTIONS OPPOSING EACH OTHER AND ENCLOSING SAID FRAME THERBETWEEN, SAID WALL PORTIONS HAVING MATCHING RECESSES FORMING AN OPENING SAID JOINT AND HOOK EXTENDING OUTWARDLY OF THE COVER THROUGH SAID OPENING, ONE OF SAID WALL PORTIONS HAVING FLAPS FOLDED OVER THE RESPECTIVE ARMS OF THE HANGER, THE OTHER OF SAID WALL PORTIONS HAVING OTHER FLAPS FOLDED OVER THE ARMS OF THE HANGER AND JUXTAPOSING SAID ONE WALL PORTION, AND MEANS SECURING SAID OTHER FLAPS AT SAID ONE WALL PORTION, SAID COVER HAVING A CENTRAL PORTION FORMED WITH A SERIES OF ELONGATED CLOSED SLOTS SPACED BY NARROW STRIPS, SAID COVER BEING FOLDED AT THE CENTERS OF THE STRIPS SO THAT THE STRIPS DEFINE LOOPS ENGAGING AROUND SAID CROSSBAR, SAID SLOTS AND CROSSBAR DEFINING A MULTIPLICITY OF STALLS FOR SUPPORTING A VARIETY OF ELONGATED ARTICLES OF APPAREL ON SECTIONS OF THE CROSSBAR BETWEEN THE STRIPS.
