(Cl. 128-527) This invention relates to girdles having elastic waistband portions, wherein an inner band is employed in conjunction with the girdle and, wherein, end portions of the band are attached to front and rear portions of the girdle so as to provide, in combination with the body portion of the girdle and said waistband, a structure which, in the use of general trade terms, would be considered panty-like.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

FIG. 1 is a front view of a girdle made according to my invention, with parts of the construction broken away, the front and rear portions of the girdle being disposed directly one upon the other.

FIG. 2 is a view, similar to FIG. 1, showing the rear portion of the girdle.

FIG. 3 is a central vertical sectional view through the girdle, diagrammatically illustrating the same in use position.

FIG. 4 is an enlarged detail section on the line 4-4 of FIG. 1 of the front portion only of the girdle.

FIG. 5 is an enlarged section, substantially on the line 55 of FIG. 1, illustrating, in part, a modified adaptation of my invention; and

FIG. 6 is a reduced plan view of a band as employed in the girdle as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, inclusive, and illustrating a portion of the modification as shown in detail in FIG. 5 of the drawing.

In illustrating one adaptation and use of my invention, I have shown in FIGS. 1 to 4, inclusive, a girdle, the body portion of which comprises an elastic waistband portion 10, to the lower edge portion of which is attached a front panel 11 and a rear panel 12. Also stitched to the waistband portion and opposed sides of the panels 11 and 12 are

13 and 14 of the girdle, the latter being preferably formed of all-way stretch materials and to lower edges of the

13 and 14 and the front and rear panels 11 and 12 is attached an elastic band 15 disposed upon the lower inner surface of the panels 11 and 12 and said

13 and 14, as diagrammatically illustrated. At this time, it is pointed out that no attempt has been made to show stitchings or attachments of the main portions of the girdle proper and any type and kind of stitchings can be employed, particularly in attachment of the front panel 11 to provide decorative sides thereon in manners well-known in the art. Further, the usual garter supports are omitted in order to simplify the present showing.

The waistband has overlapping substantially diamond-shaped sections, as indicated at 10', centrally of the front of the girdle and these sections are unattached, so as to provide free relative movement thereof in fitting of the girdle upon the body of the wearer.

The panel 11 has a contracted upper end 16 and a contracted lower end 17, these contracted ends being joined by a wider portion adjacent the upper end 16, which wider portion has rounded sides, as seen at 18.

The rear panel 12 has a contracted upper end 19 and the lower end 20 thereof is slightly contracted inwardly, as clearly noted in FIG. 2 of the drawing. Both of the panels 11 and 12 can be formed of any desired material and, in at least one use, this material can be extensible in vertical directions on the girdle and non-extensible in horizontal or circumferential direction. At 21 I have shown one of my improved bands and, in FIG. 6 of the drawing, is a reduced plan view of one of these bands, the band end portion 22 generally conforming to the peripheral contour of the major portion of the front panel 11 and an end portion 23, generally conforming to the contour of a major part of the rear panel 12, the

22 and 23 of the band being joined in what might be termed a crotch portion 24, having curved sides, as seen at 25.

Considering the illustration in FIGS. 1 to 3, inclusive, the band 21 has its side edges and ends stitched to side edges of the panels 11 and 12 and the

13 and 14 up to the position 26 on the front panel 11 and to the position 27 on the rear panel 12, leaving the crotch portion 24 freely disposed between the front and back panels of the girdle. This attachment of the crotch portion is such that, when the girdle is in use, as diagrammatically illustrated in FIG. 3, the crotch portion 24 is extended between terminal ends of attachments, as at 26 and 27 by virtue of the fact that the band 21 is preferably composed of an all-way stretch material and, in some instances, such materials as Helenca can be used. It will be apparent that the

end portions

22 and 23 of the band 21 disposed upon inner surfaces of the panels 11 and 12 will maintain contour of these panels, depending upon characteristics thereof and, when vertical extensibility is provided, then the

end portions

22 and 23 will extend vertically with said panels. It will be understood that the

28 and 29 of the band are made to conform with the contour of the lower edge of the waistband 10 and are attached thereto. Considering FIG. 4 of the drawing, the stitching of the panel 11, as well as the end portion 28 of the end 22 of the band 21 to the crossed portions 10 of the waistband, is diagrammatically illustrated by the stitchings 30 in said figure. Here again, it will be understood that any type and kind of stitchings can be used.

Considering the diagrammatic showing of FIG. 3 of the drawing, it will appear that lower portions of the

lower ends

17 and 20 of the panels 11 and 12 will be free of the crotch portion and also part of the band 21 beyond the points of attachments, as at 26 and 27. Considering FIG. 2 of the drawing, it is preferred that a reinforced line of stitching 31 extend across the crotch portion, as shown in part in said figure at the rear thereof. In some instances, the

22 and 23 can be formed independently and joined at the stitching 31. The curved edge portions of the crotch portion 24 are preferably hemmed, or otherwise reinforced, as shown at 32 in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing, particularly when such materials as Helenca are employed. When the band is assembled with the girdle body, the band, in combination with the girdle body, forms a garment which might be generally referred to as a panty, a term commonly used in the trade. In other words, leg openings of this garment are formed by the curved sides 25 of the band and that portion of the

13 and 14 of the garment extending beyond the points of attachment, as at 26 and 27.

Turning now to FIGS. 5 and 6 of the drawing, the band blank 21, as seen in FIG. 6, has been shown as a modified adaptation of the invention, wherein male members of snap fasteners are fixed to outer surfaces of the band, in other words, two of such fasteners at the

28 and 29, as seen at 33, another pair of similar fasteners at 34 positioned at the wide rounded portions of the end 22, conforming with the rounded portions 18 of the panel 11 and another pair of fasteners 35, which would be positioned at the point of attachment noted at 27 in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings and at comparable positions on the panels 11 and 12, and/

orthe sides

13, 14 of the girdle and the waistband 10 will be fixed to the female members of the snap fasteners. Thus, the band 21 can be detachably coupled with the girdle for independent laundering and/ or for dispensing with the use thereof, whenever desired. One of the female socket members of these'fasteners is shown at 36 in FIG. 5 of the drawing operatively engaging one of the male fasteners 34 and it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that, at all of the locations noted clearly inFIG. 6, the girdle will have female socket members 36 positioned for reception of the

male members

33, 34 and 35, as noted in FIG. 6 of the drawing. The points of attachment of the modified form of band, as at 34 and 35, with the girdle will maintain the band in proper position upon the body of the wearer.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A girdle of the character defined comprising a body portion having sides joined by front and rear panels, an upper Wide body encircling elastic waistband fixed to the upper edges of said sides and front and rear panels of the body portion, a band contained within the body portion, said band having ends attached to the lower edge of said waistband at the front and rear panels of the body portion, said band comprising a substantially central A crotch portion and wider end portions, said crotch portion extending between the lower portions of said front and rear panels, and said wider end portions being attached to the front and rear panels at end limits of said crotch portion and widely spaced with respect to said waistband.

2. A girdle as defined in claim 1, wherein attachments of the band to the body and said waistband comprises stitchings extending along side edges of the wide end portions of the band and ends thereof.

3. A girdle as defined in claim 1, wherein attachment of the band to the girdle comprises means detachably coupling the wide end portions of the band with respect to the panels and waistband of said girdle.

Claims

1. A GIRDLE OF THE CHARACTER DEFINED COMPRISING A BODY PORTION HAVING SIDES JOINED BY FRONT AND REAR PANELS, AN UPPER WIDE BODY ENCIRCLING ELASTIC WAISTBAND FIXED TO THE UPPER EDGES OF SAID SIDE AND FRONT AND REAR PANELS OF THE BODY PORTION, A BAND CONTAINED WITHIN THE BODY PORTION, SAID BAND HAVING ENDS ATTACHED TO THE LOWER EDGE OF SAID WAISTBAND AT THE FRONT AND REAR PANELS OF THE BODY PORTION, SAID BAND COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY CENTRAL CROTCH PORTION AND WIDER ENDS PORTIONS, SAID CROTCH PORTION EXTENDING BETWEEN THE LOWER PORTIONS OF SAID FRONT AND REAR PANELS, AND SAID WIDER END PORTIONS BEING ATTACHED TO THE FRONT AND REAR PANELS AT END LIMITS OF SAID CROTCH PORTION AND WIDELY SPACED WITH RESPECT TO SAID WAISTBAND.
