Description

W. BLANK Aug. 11, 1953 BRASSIERE Filed Aug. 8, 1951 r O f. w e w I Y/ 26???? Bzanl r a g is;
Patented Aug. 11, 1953 OFFICE BRASSIERE Wilhelm Blank, Goppingen,.Wui-ttemberg, Germany Application August 8, 1951, Serial No. 240,904 1 Claim. (01. 2-42) This invention relates to breast supporting arments and particularly to improvements in brassires.
It is the object of the invention to provide a brassire which will support the breasts of the wearer firmly and which is characterized by a pleasing and neat appearance and to avoid the provision of reinforcing elements lacking in such pleasing and neat appearance.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a brassiere having a pair of pockets for receiving the breasts, which pockets are joined together and each of which is formed approximately as a spherical segment, whereby two bands are provided adapted to encircle the wearers body together with the pockets. Said bands are secured to the pockets with one end and adapted to be detachably secured at the back of the wearer in any desired manner.
It is another object of the invention to provide means secured to the pockets, to avoid the breasts to glide out of the lower portions of the pockets and to warrant an effective support particularly of the lower portions of the breasts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of two elastic strips secured to the pockets, whereby each strip extends substantially across the lower portion of the respective pocket and forms a portion of the base of the spherical segment.
A further object of the invention is to provide such elastic strips which have a curved part at the upper edge, which curved part encircles the center of the base of the respective spherical segment. Straight portions of the upper edges of the elastic strips are provided at both sides of the curved portions thereof and secured to the pockets.
Another object of the invention is to provide pockets joined by substantially straight inner edges, whereby each pocket has a curved upper edge, a substantially straight outer edge and a curved bottom edge. Each pocket is composed of a lower portion of firm stuff and an upper portion or" fine stuff and has boundary-strips secured to it.
A further object of the invention is to provide pockets the upper portions of which are taken up at their joined inner edges for forming tucks to ensure the pockets to adapt well to the upper portions of the breasts.
Other objects, purposes and advantages will appear from the detailed description of the invention following hereinafter, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illus- .66 convergently, that is to run to a point, which trates a preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a brassire embodying the features of the invention in place upon the body of the wearer,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevation of the brassiere,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevation of the brassire.
ticularly each pocket has a curved upper edge 3, a substantially straight outer edge 4, a slightly curved bottom edge 5 and a substantially straight inner edge 6. Both pockets I are joined together at their adjacent inner edges 6 by a band 1 and seams 8 provided in a usual manner. Approximately the pockets I are formed as a spherical segment.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision and conformation of two elastic strips 9 secured to the pockets I at the rear or inner side of the brassiere. Each of these strips 9 extends substantially across the lower portion of the respective pocket I and thus forms a portion of the base of the spherical segment approximately represented by a pocket I.
Furthermore in a preferred embodiment of the invention a. portion II of the upper edge of each elastic strip 9 is curved to encircle the center of the base of the respective spherical segment. Straight portions I2 are provided at both sides of the curved portion II and secured to the pockets I by seams I0, whereas the curved portion II of the upper edge of an elastic strip 9 is not secured to the respective pocket I but provided with an elastic seam in any known manner to permit this portion II of the upper edge'to stretch independently from the pocket I.
Each of the pockets I is composed of a lower portion I4 of firm stuff and an upper portion I5 of line stuff, both portions secured to each other by a seam I3. The highest amount of width of an elastic strip 9 is less than the distance from the bottom edge 5 of one pocket I to the center of the base of the spherical segment represented by a pocket I. In conformity with this configuration of a strip 9 the straight portions I2 of the upper edge of one elastic strip are directed point is approximately the center of the said base.
The lower portion I4 of one pocket I is not configiu'ated at its upper edge to encircle the center of the base of such a spherical segment, but the upper edge of this portion I4 is curved up to the said center. In this view the outer parts of a seam I3 combining the parts I4, I5 of one pocket I are assembled to run in the same direction as the convergent straight portions I2 of the upper edge of one elastic strip 9.
The edges of the pockets I and the bands 2 are bordered with strips I6 secured to such parts by seams, and adjacent edges of said parts 9 and 2 of the brassiere are combined by such strips I6 and seams, the bottom edges and the side edges of the elastic strips 9 being combined with the pockets I by the respective strips I6 and seams.
In view of pleasing appearance of the brassiere the lower portions I4 of the pockets I and the bands 2 are composed of two layers, the outer layer being made of a more pleasing stuff, than the inner layer which is destined to be a more firm stuff.
The upper portions I5 of the pockets I being configurated approximately as curved strips and to give the pockets I the configuration of approximately spherical segments, these upper portions I5 are taken up at their joined inner edges 1 6 for forming tucks.
Shoulder straps I! extend from the top up the pockets I to the encircling bands 2 in a usual manner (not shown), and means (not shown) being provided for adjusting the length of the shoulder straps I'l.
Having thus described my invention as embodied in a specific form, it should be understood that I do not limit my invention thereto, since various modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the annexed claim.
I claim:
A brassiere comprising a pair of breast pockets joined by substantially straight inner edges, each of said pockets having a curved upper edge, a substantially straight outer edge and a curved bottom edge and are shaped approximately as a spherical segment, bordering strips secured to the pockets, each pocket being composed of a lower port-ion of heavy fabric and an upper portion of sheer fabric, a band secured to outer edges of each of said pockets with one end to encircle the body together with the pockets, and
adjustable shoulder straps for supporting the pockets, said shoulder straps being secured with one end to the upper curved edges of the pockets, two elastic strips secured to the pockets each extending substantially across the lower portion of the respective pocket and forming a portion ofthe base of the spherical segment, each of said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date 2,512,215 Rosenthal et al.
