ADJUSTABLE DESK DEVICE Filed Feb. 15, 1963 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTORS JAMES L. FULLER BY CHARLES W.Tom.mso-

United States Patent "ice 3,124,084 ADJUSTABLE DESK DEVICE James L. Fuller, Waynesboro, and Charles W. Tomlinson, Orange, Va., assignors to Acme Visible Records, Inc., Crozet, Va., a corporation of Delaware Filed Feb. 15, 1963, Ser. No. 258,823 3 Claims. (Cl. 108-64) This invention relates to a novel adjustable desk device and more particularly to means for releasably securing one or more auxiliary desks in desired angularly spaced positions about the periphery of a circular relatively fixedly. positioned desk or table.
The novel device of the present invention is particularly adapted for use in the form of a relatively fixed annular circular table, with radially extending desks, surrounding a rotatable record filing unit.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel assembly whereby radially extending desks may be supported at their inner ends in contiguous relationship to a circular or annular table in work positions which are easily moved to any point around the circumference of the circular table and fixed in desired random location thereabout.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide novel means for attaching the aforesaid desks in adjustable position about the periphery of the aforesaid circular table of simple construction and operation, the attachment means being not readily visible and thus not detracting from the outward appearance of the assembly.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention relate to details of construction, arrangement of parts and economies thereof, as will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary plan view, with parts broken away, of a device formed in accordance with the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view, with parts in section, taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional detailed view illustrating the association of one of the movable desks with the circular table top of the present invention.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary detail view on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral indicates a circular desk, table top or ledge which in the illustrated form is annular and surrounds and is concentric with the rotatable record filing device generally indicated as 11 mounted for rotation about the vertical axis 12. As is understood in the art, the rotatable record file 11 may be manually rotated or provided with electrical motor drive means, not shown, for rotating it in either clockwise or counterclockwise direction, or for holding it in a fixed position, by push button means disposed adjacent the desks 13. The desks 13 are angularly spaced about the circular table 10 in contiguous relationship thereto.
The circular top 10 is supported on suitable means such as a series of radial structure members generally indicated as 14 which in turn are mounted on the outer vertical cylindrical wall 15 embracing support means 16 for the rotatable unit 11. A cylindrical apron 17 is supported on the outer extremities of the radial members 14, as by means of the brackets 30 supported on the tie members 31 secured between the radial members 14, with the upper edge of apron 17 disposed in spaced relation to the undersurface of the circular desk top 110. This leaves a relatively narrow annular slot between the upper edge of the apron 17 and the undersurface of the circular table top 10 as best shown in detail of FIG. 3.
Secured to the inner face of the apron 17 and adjacent 3,124,084 Patented Mar. 10, 1964 its upper edge is a structural angle formed to a suitable radius and attached thereto by means of its vertical leg 18, the horizontal leg 19 projecting inwardly in plane parallel relationship to the table top 10 and with its upper surface flush with the upper edge of apron 17. The horizontal leg 19 provides an annular holder flange for engaging the desks 13 in suitable random angularly spaced disposition about the circular top 10 as will be hereinafter particularized.
The desks 13 are desirably formed with top portions 20 of arcuate contour at their inner ends 21, complementary to the arc of table top 10' so that the desk top 20 may be brought into substantial contiguous relationship to the outer peripheral edge of the circular desk top 10.
One or more means or arms 22 are secured to and carried by the underface of desk top 20 adjacent said inner edge portion 21 thereof, and are disposed adjacent and in plane parallel relationship to the tops 10 and 20.
These arm means 22 project outwardly of the desk top edge portion 21 so as to extend beneath the outer peripheral edge portion of circular table top 10 and within the notch or space between the apron 17 and the undersurface of circular top 10, where it projects over and terminates beyond the holder flange 19 as at 23. This free end portion 23- of horizontal arm 22 carries clamp means for fixedly engaging a desk 13 to and about the circular table top 10* comprising a clamp plate 24 on the screw 25, the latter being threaded into the end portion 23 of arm 22.
Thus, as shown in FIG. 3, the clamp plate 24 is disposed beneath the holder flange 19 so that the latter extends between clamp plate 24 and the end portion 23 of arm 22, and by manipulation of the screw 25 the holder flange 19 may be either fixedly clamped to secure a desk 13 in fixed position about the periphery of circular top It), or the desk .13 may be repositioned by manipulation of the screw 25 in a simple and convenient manner.
As shown in the drawings, two spaced arms 22 are employed disposed substantially parallel to the side edges of the desk 13, these arms 22 being suitably formed angle iron pieces with their vertical legs 26 secured as by means of a bolt 27 to the bracket 28. The bracket 28 extends transversely of the desk top 20 and is disposed adjacent its end portion 21 in plane parallel relationship to a tangent of the apron 17. The opposed outer end portion of desk 13 is suitably supported on the standard or base portion 29.
The above described attachment means holds the auxiliary desk top in rigid planar alignment and abutment with the circular table top at any desired position about its periphery, and since the attachment is made through a narrow annular slot adjacent the overhanging edge of circular table top 10, the attachment means is not readily visible and thus does not detract from the outward appearance of the assembly.
Although we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that modifications may be made in the details thereof by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of our invention as comprehended by the following claims.
