3 Claims.
This invention relates to a clamp and more particularly to a clamp adapted for attachment to a table for holding a typewriter or other mechanism thereon.
With present day practice, typewriters or other machines are placed on tables loosely in which event they slide around over the plane surface of the table during use, or they are fastened to the table by screwed bolts or the like, thus preventing movement of the machine to points on the table for convenience in use.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a clamp for holding typewriters or other equipment in place rigidly on the table in any desired place thereon. In present day practice expensive equipment is used on tables in offices and it is desirable to have a structure for holding such equipment in place so that there will be no danger of the equipment falling from the table, thus causing damage thereto.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a clamp movably attached to the edge of the table and adjustable vertically thereon; to provide a clamp having arms extending parallel over the table top for engagement with the typewriter or other equipment; to provide for longitudinal adjustment of said arms; to attach said arms in the manner so that the outer ends toein to engage the typewriter or other equipment; to provide for removably attaching said arms to the clamp proper; and to provide a device of this character simple, economical to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention shown attached to the table top and a typewriter in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the clamping arms shown attached to the clamp proper with parts broken away to better illustrate the invention.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device taken from the rear with the parts shown in disassembled relation.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
I designates a clamp embodying the features of my invention shown attached to a table 2 having a top 3 having depending flanges forming a front edge 4 and rear edge 5, the table top being supported by legs 6. The ends of the top of the table may be provided with drop leaves I and B, if desired.
The clamp proper consists of a plate 9 of substantially rectangular shape having ends l0 and l! and a lower edge l2 and upper edge l3. The plate is provided with a depression M on the front face I5 thereof around its outer periphery forming an annular rib [6 on the back face thereof, and the body of the plate is provided with longitudinal ribs I1 and I8 and vertical or transverse ribs |9 and 20 spaced from the ends of the plate for lending rigidity to said plate. Located between the annular rib around the end of the plate and the vertical ribs Hi and 20 are elongated slots 2|. Located between the longitudinal rib I! and annular rib l6 near the top of the plate are elongated slots 22 and 23, as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
The depending flange of the rear edge 5 of the table top is provided with spaced threaded openings 24, the threaded openings being spaced apart distance equal to that between the vertical slots 2| in the plate 9. In order to fasten the plate to the table, I provide threaded bolts 25 having an ofiset portion forming a shoulder 26 and providing a threaded shank 21 for engaging through the slots 2| and into the threaded bore openings in the table 24 for holding the plate 9 to the table. The bolts 25 are provided with a large substantially circular outer portion 28 having a rubber covering or the like 29 to provide a hand hold for easy turning of the bolt.
Brackets 3|] and 3| are removably and slidably secured to the inner face of the plate 9 by bolts 32 having threaded shanks 33, provided with a washer 33', adapted to engage through the slots 22 and 23 of the plate and into threaded bores 35 located near one end of the bracket. The bolt 32 is substantially similar to the bolt 25 as heretofore described, and provided with rubber covering 35 for easy handling thereof.
Rigidly secured on one side of the brackets near one end of the threaded opening 24 and extending substantially at right angles to said brackets are arms 36 and 31 respectively provided with rubber sleeves 38 and 39 for engaging the side of the typewriter 40 when the device is assembled for use. On the side of the brackets 30 and 3| opposite the arms 36 and 37 are .lugs 4| and 32 adapted to engage in the slots 22 and 23 to prevent turning of the [bracket in the slots and to form a more rigid structure. The brackets 3i] and 3| are bent slightly at the centers thereof as at 43. The arms 36 and 31 are therefore set at a slight angle to the clamping portions 44, of the brackets, that contain the threaded bores 34 and lugs 4| and 42, as best illustrated in Fig. 2.
When assembling the clamp on a table for use,
the plate [9 is fastened to the rear edge of the table by a bolt 25 as above described and may be adjusted upwardly or downwardly with respect to the table by sliding the plate on the cranks of the bolt as provided by the slots 2|. The typewriter may then be placed at the desired place on the table and the brackets adjusted longitudinally with respect to the plate by sliding of the shanks of the bolts 32 in the longitudinal slots 22 and 23 until the arms 36 and 31 engage the sides of the typewriter with sufficient pressure to hold the typewriter steady therebetween. Tightening of the bolts 36 and 31 will cause the outer ends of the arms 36 and 3! to toe-in due to the slight bends in the brackets 33 and 3!, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 to more securely hold the typewriter in the clamp.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved clamp for typewriters or other equipment for use on tables or the like which may be easily assembled and easily ad- Justed on the table with respect to the equipment being used.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine holder comprising, an elongated plate adapted to be removably and adjustably mounted on a machine support, said plate having longitudinal slots therein, spaced brackets having faces central portions of which slidably engage the plate, a projection on each bracket extending into the slots, said brackets having adjacent end portions with faces extending at an acute angle to the plate, arms on the brackets and extending therefrom away from the plate, and means engaging the adjacent end portions of the brackets and the plate for securing the brackets to the plate in selected positions and drawing the adjacent end portions toward the plate to move the free ends of the arms toward each other.
2. A machine holder comprising, an elongated plate adapted to be removably and adjustably mounted on a machine support, said plate having longitudinal slots therein, spaced brackets extending lengthwise of the plate and having faces central portions of which slidably engage the plate, a projection on each bracket extending from said central portion into the slots, said brackets having adjacent end portions with faces extending at an acute angle to the plate, arms on the brackets and extending therefrom substantially perpendicular to the plate, and means engaging the adjacent end portions of the brackets and the plate for securing the brackets to the plate in selected positions and drawing the adjacent end portions toward the plate to move the free ends of the arms toward each other.
3. A machine holder comprising, an elongated plate adapted to be removably and adjustably mounted on a table or the like, said plate having longitudinal slots therein, spaced brackets extending lengthwise of the plate and having faces central portions of which slidably engage the plate, a projection on each bracket extending from said central portions into the slots, said brackets having adjacent end portions with faces extending at an acute angle to the plate, arms on the brackets and extending therefrom substantially perpendicular to the plate, threaded shanks extending through the longitudinal slots in the plate and engaging the adjacent end portions of the brackets, and means on the threaded shanks engaging the plate on the opposite side thereof to the brackets whereby turning of said threaded shanks draws the adjacent end portions of the brackets toward the plate to secure the brackets thereto and move the free ends of the arms toward each other.
