Schuioaft, Towson, Md., assignor to The Murray Corporation, a Corporation of Maryiand Fiied st. 10, 1961, Ser. No. 144,260 6 Clairns. (Cl. 24-281) This invention relates to a clamping device adapted to apply compressing pressure to a hose or the l-ike of great-ly varying diameter although it will be apparent that it may be applied to many other uses. It is of the type ill-uStrated in the patent to applicant, No. 2,6-22290, December 23, 1952, and it is believed to be an improvement thereon.
More specically the lclarnping device of this inventio-n includes in combination an elen-gated irnperforate grippin g member or Strap having bosses in its free end to be placed over a projecting tongue on a bracket for making Substantial adjustments in the length of the Strap and then including on the bracket a screw which tightens the Strap for a length considerably greater than the distance between the ibosses on the Strap and at the same time holds the Strap down on the end of the Strap :contain-ing the upstanding bosses to prevent .any release of the Strap from the bracket in the vibration of the hose or any other member to Vwhich the device has been applied.
Among the objects lof the invention are to make a Strap or clarnping device which will allow for this adjustment of its length around the object to be .clamped tightly and in substantial steps, the distance between one or more of the bosses in the Strap free end.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the tighten'ng of the Strap through Short distances by the fine adjustment allowed in -the turning of the screw running tangential to the strap.
Another object of the invention is to a lock the stnap on the projection on the bracket in any of the boss-es for which the first adjustment was made in order to retain the Strap in its adjusted length. If the first adjustme-nt of the Strap should leave the bend -in the Strap free end between the bosses, the Strap will merely creep around the retaining edge of the bracket until a boss on its under side Slips over the projection on the bracket edge, at which time other Slipping will be prevented by the firm engagement of the inside of the boss on lthe Projection. The hold obtained by the use of the instant invention is Substantially shake proof. It is possible to use a more fiexible Strap because the formation of the bosses under pressure within the strap makes the Strap more rigid at the -locatiou of the boss, while allowing freedom of the bending of the Strap and at its bend around the bracket portion on both sides of the boss. lt will be apparent that the tighter the Strap is clarnped by the screw, the tighter will the screw free end be pulled down on the overfolded free end of the Strap and since the bosses project upwardly in this overfolded free end, it will be apparent that the block on the end of the screw around which the anchored end of the Strap is wrapped rests tightly not only on the bosse-s, but when it should fall between thern, an additional :holding edge is available as they are impacted on their edges b-y |the Strap langle folded around the block at the end of the screw.

The nipple member 1 of an automobile radiator may -be connected to the engine block of tan automobile by the hose 2 and the connection is made tight by the clamping device of the instant invention, in which a Strap 3 passes through a slot 4 in the base 5 of the bracket 6 and is anchored to the end of a crew 7 passing through a threaded opening 8 in the overfolded end of the bracket. The :end of the bracket as at 9 is folded substantially parallel to the portion lit) of the base of the bracket and both parallel portions are threaded as at 11 to guide the screw longitudinally of the bracket and also to hold the free end of the screw down upon the free end of the Strap. The anchored end of the Strap passes around the block 12 freely rotating on the free end of bolt, |where it is :held by the swaged portion 13 of the bolt. The free end 14- of the Strap has bosses 15 longitud-inally, centrally impressed Itherein which project downwardly into the rubber hose being bound and serve to guide and hold the Strap :and bracket rigidly in place on the hose. The end 16 of the bracket has projecting centrally within the slot 4 toward the 'threaded end of the bracket, a projeotion or tongue 17. This end 16 is offset slightly from the screw as shown in FIGURE l. When the Strap free end 14-, containing the bosses, is whappe-d around the object to be clarn-ped and threa'ded into the slot 4, it is preferably pulled to the :last tight position where the interior of the boss -wiil fit substantially complcmentarily over the projection 17, as shown in FIGU-R-E 6. ln this position the free end of the Strap is bent down around the end 16 of the bracket and then the screw 7 is tights-ned by the rotation of its head 18 using a screwdriver in the slot y19 to slide the :block and Strap anchored end over the bosses as yshown in FIGURES 1 -and 2. This sliding action tightly bends the Strap around the end of 16 of the bracket and the tighter the pull is upon the Strap, caused by the tightening of the screw, the -harder the free end of the screw pressas downwardly upon the bosses. It will be apparent that with the tightening of the screw, the boss on the projection 17 wiil be expanded, and conform to the shape of projection 17, and the bend in the Strap will eng'aige the edge of end 16 of the bracket. However, the bosses as they are engaged from their top by the anchored end of the Strap and block 12, firmly hold the free end of the Strap down, and the Strap, portion of the anzchored end of the immediately back from the block, bearing on the fold in the Strap free end, around the projection 17, inhibits .any creeping of the Strap around this edge bracket after the interior of the boss is firmiy engaged with the Projection. -It will also be apparent that the impression of the bosses in the Strap leaves the Strap whole, imperforate, So that it is not -weakened substantially.
It will be apparent that many modifications of the con.- struction shown and described in detail may be made without departing -from Ithe spirit of the nvention.
What is claimed as new and is desired to be Secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A clamping device compnising -a Strap for forming a loop about -an object to be clamped, a bracket having a base substantially tangent to the object to be clarnped, the base having therein yadjacent one end a transverse slot the base at its end forming one boundary of the slot con- Sttuting -a transverse base bar and the base having at the opposite end and extending upwardly from the base, a-n
end Wall having .a threaded opening therethrough, a screw having a for-Ward end extending through said end wall opening across and substantial-ly parallel to the base, the base bar at the slot end having a projection thereon, spaced from the sides of the slot and extending in the plane of the ybase into the slot, toward the end wall, two end portons of the stnap extending upwardly through said slot, :one end portion being connected to the forward end of the screw, the screw Vbeing rotat-able with respect thereto, the other end portion of the Strap having a series of bosses extending inwardly therealong, spaced frorn the sides thereof, presenting co-inciding depressions upon the reverse side of the Strap, the said other end of the Strap being folded upon itself transversely in line with one of said bo-sses, with the bosses extending outwardly and the Strap engaging the base bar, and the depression opposite the boss at the fold receiving therein said projection, whereby as the screw is Iturned Kto rnove forwardly of the bracket, to fighten the clarnp, the strap end on the screw will bear downwardly an slidingly against the projeeting bosses on the said other end portion of the stra 2. The clamping device of clairn 1 in Which the bracket end wall has a portion folded forwardly, parallel to and hearing upon the screw, to force the screw down at its forward end toward the slotted end of the base.
3. The clamping device of claim 1 including a block freely pivoting on the forward end of the screw the Strap connected to the forward end of the screw being folded round the forward lface and lower edge of said block.
4. The clarnp-ing device of clairn 1 in which the proiection :on 'the bracket base is ronnded, with a cnrvantre substanti-ally complernentary to the depressions within the bosses on the strap.
5. The clamping device of claim 1 in which the pre-je"- tion is placed substantially central-ly of the bracket base slot and the bosses are substantially in the transverse center of the strap.
6. The clarnping device of claim 1 in which the lbracket end wall has a portion extended forwardly, -parallcl to rand bearing 'upon the screw and the bracket base is offset adj-acent its slot away from the screw and with the Iportions of the bracket, on both sides of the screw, being threaded and Contacting the screw to firmly hold the screw in place therebetween.

Claims (1)

1. A CLAMPING DEVICE COMPRISING A STRAP FOR FORMING A LOOP ABOUT AN OBJECT TO BE CLAMPED, A BRACKET HAVING A BASE SUBSTANTIALLY TANGENT TO THE OBJECT TO BE CLAMPED, THE BASE HAVING THEREIN ADJACENT ONE END A TRANSVERSE SLOT THE BASE AT ITS END FORMING ONE BOUNDARY OF THE SLOT CONSTITUTING A TRANSVERSE BASE BAR AND THE BASE HAVING AT THE OPPOSITE END AND EXTENDING UPWARDLY FROM THE BASE, AN END WALL HAVING A THREADED OPENING THERETHROUGH, A SCREW HAVING A FORWARD END EXTENDING THROUGH SAID END WALL OPENING ACROSS AND SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL TO THE BASE, THE BASE BAR AT THE SLOT END HAVING A PROJECTION THEREON, SPACED FROM THE SIDES OF THE SLOT AND EXTENDING IN THE PLANE OF THE BASE INTO THE SLOT, TOWARD THE END WALL, TWO END PORTIONS OF THE STRAP EXTENDING UPWARDLY THROUGH SAID SLOT, ONE END PORTION BEING CONNECTED TO THE FORWARD END OF THE SCREW, THE SCREW BEING ROTATABLE WITH RESPECT THERETO, THE OTHER END PORTION OF THE STRAP HAVING A SERIES OF BOSSES EXTENDING INWARDLY THEREALONG, SPACED FROM THE SIDES THEREOF, PRESENTING COINCIDING DEPRESSIONS UPON THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE STRAP, THE SAID OTHER END OF THE STRAP BEING FOLDED UPON ITSELF TRANSVERSELY IN LINE WITH ONE OF SAID BOSSES, WITH THE BOSSES EXTENDING OUTWARDLY AND THE STRAP ENGAGING THE BASE BAR, AND THE DEPRESSION OPPOSITE THE BOSS AT THE FOLD RECEIVING THEREIN SAID PROJECTION, WHEREBY AS THE SCREW IS TURNED TO MOVE FORWARDLY OF THE BRACKET, TO TIGHTEN THE CLAMP, THE STRAP END ON THE SCREW WILL BEAR DOWNWARDLY AN SLIDINGLY AGAINST THE PROJECTING BOSSES ON THE SAID OTHER END PORTION OF THE STRAP.
