BUTTON FASTENING. No. 308,299. Patented Nov. 18, 1884 N. PETERS. Pholu-Llllmgmphcr. Wa'shingmm ac NITE Srarns ATENT Fries.
JAMES F. ATWVOOD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,299, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed December 3, 1883. (N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs F. A'rwooi), of
' Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This button-fastening consists of a washer or plate constructed as below'described, and adapted to be placed on the under or inner side of the fabric or other material-i. e., 011 the side opposite to that to which the button is applied, said button and washer being con nected by a wire or similar device passing through said material.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of referenceindicatelike parts, Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent sectional views of the washer in the different stages in the process of fastening the button, the wire being shown in elevation, and the but ton and material to which it is applied being shown in broken lines. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the button, material, and washer completely fastened together. Fig. 6 is a view of the under side of the washer fastened in place. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the upper side.
A represents the fabric, leather, or other material, made in one or more thicknesses, to which the button is secured.
B is a button, and G a piece of wire bent into I the form of a staple. The button may have eyes, shank, or other provision for the passage through of the wire, and may be of any style, and the wire may be of any material and round, fiat, or of other suitable shape.
D is a washer, preferably of metal, and usually circular in shape, provided with two perforations, a a, two parallel slits, b b, and a central transverse connecting-slit, d. By means of these slits I) b d opposite tongues are formed, which, being bent downward, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, form the lips D, each of which is provided with a notch, 0. (Shown in Figs. 1-, (3, and 7.)
The operation of fastening the button is as follows: The wire 0 is first passed through the eyes of the button, the material and the perforations a a in the washer or disk D (whose lips D are bent downward) all being in the position shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the wire 0 are then bent inwardly through the notches 6 into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2, then upwardly against the inner sides of the lips D, as shown in Fig. 3; then the lips D are bent inwardly and upwardly toward each other into the' horizontal position shownin Figs. 4,15, 6, and 7, and the fastenof the above-described process are preferably accomplished by aid of tools or machines especially constructed for the purpose. The perforations a a are made near the bends formed by the lips D D, so as to have no surplus wire at those points. i i It will be seen that the numerous bends in the wire 0 insure a strong grip upon the washer D, and the ends of the wire are left between the washer and material A, so as to be out of the way.
It will be noticed by referenceto Figs. 1, 2, 4:, and 5 of the drawings that I have made enable me to groove the under (or outer) sides of the lips D longitudinally at h, so as to allow the wire 0 to lie therein flush with the surface of thelips and washer, thus preventing the wire from being perceptible when applied to a garment to be worn.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a button fastening, the herein-described washcr or disk D, slitted at b b d, and provided with the internal lips, D, and a fastening-wire extending from the button to points below the said washer or disk, and thence around the inner edges of said lips D to points above the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a button fastening, the herein described washer or disk D, slitted at b I) (Z, and provided with the internal lips, D, notched or recessed at c, and a fastening-wire extending from the button to points below the said washer or disk, and thence around the inner edges of said lips, D, to points abovethe same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a button fastening, the hereindeing process is completed. The different stages the washer D of sufficiently thick material to 4 scribed improved washer or disk D, provided a, and the grooves h,extending from said perwith the internal lips, D, and perforations a, foratio'ns to the inner ends of said lips, snb- IO said perforations being made near the bends stantially as and for the purpose described.
produced by the lips as they are bent down- T ward, substantially as and for the purpose set JAMES F! forth. Witnesses:
4. In a button-fastening, the washer ordisk I HENRY W. WVILLIAMs,
D, provided with the lips D and perforations JOSEPH ISHBAUGH.
